I actually don't think so. That gets dangerously close to "better than Doom Blade". Not strictly better, since it's BB, but better. Then again, so did Victim of Night.
Now the "how much can I screw with this flavor" fun is what happens to Island Fish Jasconius, which can't walk, can't live outside the water, is too big to be on a boat, and really doesn't mind being in the water.
I think at uncommon rarity this should have been an instant. And a full-art promo of a worse version of a mediocre removal spell is kind of sad. But you could also argue that "walking the plank" is a slower, more methodical way to "throw someone off the boat" (Diabolic Edict's oldest artwork)
My point is mostly that it would be such a marginal sidegrade to Victim of Night that no real change to the meta would result, and its absence will not be noticed.
I never said victim wasn't playable. In fact I never even brought up victim. I'm just looking at this card from a Modern point of view. It could have been and alternative for victim and go for the throats but now it can't. That's all.
And clearly they're not the same card even if both were instants, your stance is hard to fathom. So are u Glad this is a sorcery? I've won a game against a deck because they couldn't Victim my Gurmag angler. Victim has modern blind spots, and they are clearly very different from this one.
I think we likely have to face that this is the replacement for Grasp of Darkness. Anyone who played that is going to miss it with this as the alternative...
2) Say what you will about viability, the flavor is beyond perfect on this card.
3) While unexciting, this is likely serviceable as a 1 or 2-of in a variety of decks to smooth out curve issues between Fatal Push and Never // Return.

Well, the speed is important. Less so in limited, I'll admit.
I prefer avoiding the "Doom Blade problem" where one removal acts as a sort of trump card. (With some exceptions: I have used Hideous End in Constructed before. It was a Bloodchief Ascension deck.) Making removal a meta call is actually a good idea.
