Top card: Simian Spirit Guide
kills turn 2 even on the play. Thalia shuts off the entire opponent deck; Berserk tramples for lethal over the chump-blocking Ornithopter, with Cavern and a Spirit Guide to pay the extra cost Thalia imposes. This deck is ALMOST modern legal, but I can't find a suitable replacement for Berserk.
Looks like it was pretty easy because I forgot about the many options available for tax effects xD. My solution didn't use any leyline or cavern of souls trickery but just brute force. The legacy deck I was using was a configuration of an actual dredge deck on the draw:
Cabal Therapy away two of his counters and he should gut shot one of your creatures now (if he knows what's coming) this leaves you with 3 Zombie Tokens and he has 4x FoW in hand and 2 ornithopters on board. Cast all 4 gitaxian probes he should counter two then you get to draw to and dredge 6:
Now if he didn't counter Gitaxian Probes before (in which case you continue to dregde and set up for a win more turn 3 kill) you cast Cabal Therapy now getting 4 Zombies up to (1 Narc, 7 Zombies) Then Dread Return x2 to get through the last counter getting a minimum of 5 zombies and a FKZ he should be at 12 life (3x Phyrexian Mana 2x Force) with two ornithopers. Get in for 12 (ornithopters block 2 3/3's) putting him to exactly 0.
The modern legal version is simpler and I thought it up after I remember cards like Thalia, leyline, xantid swarm, and Grand Abolisher Exist. It's actually really simple:
Play Intervention Pact, then play Patrician's Scorn for no mana. The top card is either Greater Mossdog, or Counterbalance is destroyed.
City of Traitors+Simian Spirit Guide pay for Sculpting Steel. Sculpting Steel copies Mox Lotus (note: not a targeted effect). Infinite mana for you. Cyclonic Rift clears their board of annoying permanents, and a (large but not infinite) Fireball kills them (OLD SCHOOL STYLE!).
This is one of my older puzzles. I hope some people here enjoy it!
Instructions:
The contents of Graveyards and Exile zones at the start of this puzzle are irrelevant. Your opponent will not cast any spells or activate any abilities during your turn. However, your solution must be valid regardless of the choices your opponent makes, such as choosing blockers.
The puzzle starts at the beginning of your precombat main phase with nothing having happened this turn besides your regular untap step, upkeep, and draw step. You must win this turn.
The Puzzle: Your Life: 10 Your Poison: 0 Your Library: 24 Your Graveyard: 16
Tragic Slip a Strix. Make the other Strix Red with Scuttlemutt. Equip Cackling Imp with Sword of War and Peace (sacrifice Scuttlemutt to Phyrexian Tower for mana). Caress of Phyrexia THEM, draw a card (sacrificing Golem). Swing with Imp, get damage trigger from Sword. In response, make Sword a dude with Toymaker and then give it Infect with Tainted Strike. Trigger resolves, their Poison total goes to 10, they lose.
Shimmer Myr, exiling 3x Elvish Spirit Guide
Black Lotus, Grindstone (and activate it, decking them thanks to their mono-colour deck or bad deck order), Lion's Eye Diamond.
Topdeck Mikokoro, Center of the Sea, and activate it using LED, making them draw their last card. Victory!
Edit... wait, no, that's 1 mana off. CURSES! I can deck them, but not make them draw a card...
I have a new puzzle although I think it should actually be declared a challenge: [ . . . ]
Here's my attempt.
During your draw step, draw one card, so you have 8.
During your precombat main phase, play Mutavault and exile two Simian Spirit Guides to get RR with which to activate the second ability of Mutavault and activate the channel ability of Shinen of Fury's Fire, targeting Mutavault. You have four cards left.
During combat, have Mutavault attack, then exile two more Simian Spirit Guides and tap Glimmervoid to get RRG, and activate the bloodrush abilities of Rubblebelt Maaka and Ghor-Clan Rampager targeting Mutavault, which becomes 9/9 and gains trample, and deals 9 damage to the opponent.
Exile Elven Spirit Guide end step
Tap Glimmervoid, Cycle Undead Gladiator 6 CIH
Upkeep, exile Simian Spirit Guide (5 CIH), return Gladiator to hand, discard Golgari Grave Troll (4 card + gladiator)
Dredge 6 cards including Anger, 4x Narcomeba, Scourge Devil. (4 cards, Troll in hand)
Play Mountain, exile two spirit guide and tap mountain, Unearth Scourge Devil.
Attack, using last two cards for Spirit Guide/Rubblebelt Maka
Draw phase, you still have one blue and you draw, uhm, Ancestral Recall.
Cast it, draw 3.
Noiw you are free to play blue, colorless, land, no X and no over 3cc. Shouldn't be hard, even if Lotus is gone...
As pointed out, doesn't work; can't keep the mana floating.
However:
3x spirit guide, Shimmer Myr, Black Lotus, LED.
Use Lotus to Pay for Ichor Wellspring, crack LED in response
Draw from Wellspring, 4 mana floating Krark Clan Ironworks
Sac wellspring, draw. Cast another wellspring, sacrifice, repeat x3 (4 cih, 2 mana) Chromatic Star x 4, Terrarion x 4 (4 CIH, 9 mana) Duplicant eats White Iona
Sacrifice Duplicant
Mox Pearl
Lotus Petal Second Sunrise
etc....
Eot cycle Undead Gladiator.
Upkeep discard Golgari Grave-Troll (4 IDless cards), dredge into GGT, x2 Narcomoba, x3 Bridge. Drop Mountain, use remainder of blanks to cycle Slice and Dice into 6 zombies, plus Anger and and 2x Narcomoeba...
Wait, hang on. Not Narcomoeba. Bloodghast. Then flip into 4x Narcomoeba. Attack for 16.
Guide guide guide myr lotus.
Aether spell bomb, bounce blue Iona, U floating.
Ancestral
Pact of Negation on silence.
Draw back up to three.
Main phase, Mox Sapphire, Mana Crypt, Time Twister
7 cards in hand, blue spells available to cast, Black Lotus shuffled back in. Easy to win from here
bazaar. Discard Golgari Grave Troll, dragon shadow, dragon scales. 6 cih
Cycle Street Wraith, dredge Troll (5 unknown cih)
Reveal Scourge Devil, Extractor Demon, the other three Dragon enhantments, and ???
Exile five spirit guides to unearth both creatures, put a bunch of enchantments on them
Here's a plan of attack that almost works for creating an infinite loop by using the land drop for something other than Bazaar, but it falls a bit short of fuel. Maybe there's some modification that can push it over the edge.
Draw for the turn, going to 8 cards.
Use 3 spirit guides to play Gathan Raiders face down. (Conjurer's Ban can't stop face down spells, since they have no name.) 4 cards left in hand.
Discard Golgari Grave-Troll to pay the morph cost on Gathan Raiders. 3 cards left.
Pay 2 life to cycle Street Wraith, choosing to dredge the Troll. Still 3 cards in hand, but one is known to be Troll. Mill 4x Narcomoeba, 1x Bloodghast, and 1x Fatestitcher. All Narcomoebas go to the battlefield.
Tap Glimmervoid for blue, which unearths the Fatestitcher.
Play the land for the turn: Gaea's Cradle, triggering landfall and getting back Bloodghast. Alongside the 4 Narcomoebas, the Fatesticher, and the Gathan Raiders, that makes Cradle tap for 7 green.
Playing face down creatures is great for making a mockery of this challenge, so use 3 mana to play Root Elemental face down. Now that there's an eighth creature on the board, use Fatestitcher's haste (provided by unearth) to untap Gaea's Cradle then re-tap for 8 mana, 12 total. It only takes 7 to flip Root Elemental face up, leaving 5 floating.
...And there's the problem, because at this point only one card remains in hand: Golgari Grave-Troll, which enters as a 1/1 which can kill itself for 1 mana (or 0, by replacing Street Wraith with Edge of Autumn) to get back to the graveyard, but then there's no place further to go. Given the luxury of one extra card in hand, the infinite loop would be in the bag:
Use Root Elemental to drop Griselbrand from hand.
Pay 7 life to draw 7 cards. 91 life remains.
Exile all five remaining Spirit Guides to go to 10 mana.
Play another face-down Gathan Raiders, and discard Grave-Troll again to turn it face up. 7 mana left.
Pay 7 more life to draw 6 cards, and dredge 6 in lieu of the last one: Devoted Druid, Morselhoarder, Scholar of Athreos, Psychatog (just in case), Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter (ditto), and another Fatestitcher. 84 life, 8 cards in hand, one of which is Grave-Troll again.
Pay 4 mana to play and unmorph Birchlore Rangers, and 3 to do the same for Proteus Machine, making it an Elf and emptying the mana pool. 6 cards in hand.
Use Birchlore Rangers' ability to tap itself and Proteus Machine (the ability doesn't care about summoning sickness), getting a single blue mana.
Unearth the second Fatestitcher, and tap it to untap Gaea's Cradle, which now sees 12 creatures and taps for 12 green.
Use 10 mana to play and unmorph another Root Elemental, dumping Necrotic Ooze from hand. 4 cards left.
Use Ooze's ability inherited from Devoted Druid to give itself a -1/-1 counter (and put an untap on the stack, which we don't care about). Immediately remove this counter for Morselhoarder's ability to get a black mana, and repeat this process until there are 3e+50 mana in the pool.
Finally, use the ability from Scholar of Athreos to drain life one at a time until the opponent is dead.
But alas, there doesn't currently appear to be a way to get the one extra card that makes the whole "dream sequence" possible...
Something similar does work! (Edit: The following post is correct.)
Begin in the same way up to the dredge, which this time gets four Narcomoebas and two Fatestitchers.
Exile a Simian Spirit Guide and tap Glimmervoid to get two mana.
Play Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and activate its second ability to get four blue mana.
Unearth both Fatestitchers, then untap and tap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, twice, ending up with ten blue mana.
Cast Riptide Survivor face down and turn it face up, leaving four blue mana; discard Golgari Grave-Troll and replace one of the three card drawings with its dredge, getting the remaining two Fatestitchers and four arbitrary cards.
Unearth those two Fatestitchers. Use one to tap and untap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, which gives nine blue mana for a total of eleven.
Cast Coral Trickster and Master of the Veil face down (five blue mana left), turn the latter face up and target Riptide Survivor, and in response to that triggered ability, turn Coral Trickster face up leaving three blue mana, and tap and untap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, going up to twelve blue mana; now Riptide Survivor is turned face down; turn it face up (nine blue mana left); discard Golgari Grave-Troll again and draw three new cards.
Cast two more Coral Tricksters face down (three blue mana left); turn one face up; untap and tap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, getting twelve blue mana. Turn the other face up and untap and tap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, getting thirteen blue mana, making a total of twenty-two. Do it again with the fourth Fatestitcher, ending up with thirty-three blue mana.
Cast Weaver of Lies face down, and now Weaver of Lies, Master of the Veil, and the Coral Tricksters can be repeatedly turned face down and up to get infinite blue mana; Riptide Survivor and Glimmervoid can be hit to get mana of other colours and draw cards. Repeatedly cycle Resounding Thunder, discarding Emrakul, the Aeons Torn with Riptide Survivor to get it back, dealing damage to the opponent as many times as necessary.
We started with 8 cards, went to 4 to cast Raiders, and then 3 to unmorph it. Then we use Street Wraith to dredge, which leaves us with two cards and a Golgari Grave-Troll. From there, you attempt to exile a Spirit Guide, play a Nykthos, and morph a Riptide Survivor, which is too many non-Grave-Troll cards.
Exile two Simian Spirit Guides and tap Glimmervoid to cast Gathan Raiders face down.
Turn it face up, discarding Golgari Grave-Troll.
Cycle Street Wraith, replacing the card drawing with dredge, which gets one Narcomoeba, four Sword of the Meek, and one Fatestitcher. The Narcomoeba returns to the battlefield; return the Swords of the Meek to the battlefield.
Play Tolarian Academy and tap it to get four blue mana.
Cast Proteus Machine face down and turn it face up; it doen not matter what creature type is chosen.
Unearth Fatestitcher with the last blue mana and use it to untap and tap Tolarian Academy, getting five blue mana this time.
Cycle Esper Sojourners and untap and tap Tolarian Academy, then do that three more times, ending up with thirteen blue mana.
Cast Riptide Survivor face down and turn it face up with seven blue mana left; discard Golgari Grave-Troll and draw three cards.
Cast Coral Trickster face down and turn it face up; untap and tap Tolarian Academy, ending up with eight blue mana.
Cast another Coral Trickster face down and turn it face up; untap and tap Tolarian Academy, ending up with nine blue mana.
Cast Weaver of Lies face down and turn it face up with one blue mana left; turn Riptide Survivor and the two Coral Tricksters face down.
Turn a Coral Trickster face up with the remaining blue mana, and untap and tap Tolarian Academy, getting five blue mana.
Do the same with the other Coral Trickster, ending up with nine blue mana.
Turn Riptide Survivor face up with six blue mana left; discard nothing and draw three cards.
Cast Vesuvan Shapeshifter face down and turn it face up, leaving one blue mana; make it a copy of Weaver of Lies, and turn Weaver of Lies and the two Coral Tricksters face down.
Now Weaver of Lies, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, and the Coral Tricksters can be repeatedly turned face down and up to get infinite blue mana; Riptide Survivor and Glimmervoid can be hit to get mana of other colours and draw cards. Repeatedly cycle Resounding Thunder, discarding Emrakul, the Aeons Torn with Riptide Survivor to get it back, dealing damage to the opponent as many times as necessary.
