I was evaluating cards for a cube and realized that there are no U/R board wipes, so designed this:
version 1 VoidflameXXUR
Sorcery {R}
Voidflame deals X damage to each creature. If a creature dealt damage this way would die, exile it instead.
Return all creatures that took damage from Voidflame to their owners' hand. Summoned creatures return home when you hit them hard enough, but if you can burn away the connection before they get there...
version 2 VoidflameXXUR
Sorcery {R}
Voidflame deals X damage to each creature. If a creature dealt damage this way would die, exile it instead. Otherwise return it to its owners' hand. Summoned creatures return home when you hit them hard enough, but if you can burn away the connection before they get there...
Current version:
VoidflameXXUR
Sorcery {R}
Voidflame deals X damage to each creature. If this damage would cause a creature to die, exile it instead. Otherwise return it to its owners' hand. Summoned creatures return home when you hit them hard enough, but if you can burn away the connection before they get there...
State based effects (ie "did this creature take lethal damage?") aren't checked in the middle of the resolution of a spell. What will happen here is that all creatures that took damage will bounce. None will die/exile.

To get the desired effect your spell needs to set up a delayed trigger that will bounce after it resolves, probably at the end step.
Voidflame deals X damage to each creature. If a creature dealt damage this way would die this turn, exile it instead.
At the beginning of the next end step return all creatures that were dealt damage by Voidflame to their owners' hand.

Hmm, waiting until the end step to bounce makes it significantly weaker since it can no longer clear the way for hasted attackers. New version added to the OP. Thanks for the feedback!
Add "this turn" after "if a creature dealt damage this way would die" and you're good.
I like the card, though it may be a bit undercosted. I wonder if it could be "X damage divided as you choose among up to X target creatures" instead with the same mana cost.
You haven't fixed the first problem. To accomplish exactly what you want(immediately exiling creatures and bouncing the rest) you need to exile with the spell, not rely on state-based actions to exile when the creatures die.
Voidflame deals X damage to each creature. If a creature was dealt lethal damage this way exile it. otherwise return it to their owners' hand.
I have it worded exactly like Anger of the Gods without the "this turn" phrase, which isn't necessary because the state-based check will happen upon resolution of the spell. The phrase "this turn" is used to indicate when a delayed trigger stops existing and allows damage from other sources to trigger the exile, which I don't need. So if I need it to say anything, I need it to say "If this damage would cause a creature to die, exile it instead."
"Otherwise" is simply used for branching logic...it doesn't create a different delayed trigger, it allows the trigger to have two possible outcomes upon resolution.
As for being undercosted...it's still less powerful than Wrath of God. At 8 mana it exactly replicates casting Anger of the Gods followed by Evacuation, but without the versatility of Evacuation's instant speed. and requiring two colors.
Version 3 added to OP.
edit: I'm not sure why I said "and requiring two colors; casting those two spells also requires two colors.

Finally a good white villain quote: "So, do I ever re-evaluate my life choices? Never, because I know what I'm doing is a righteous cause."
