So I am planning on using this ability in my newest set. Tell me what you think.
Augment - When you play this card you may discard a card to reduce the cost by up to 2. You may cast the discarded card for it's casting cost.
Not sure if that is worded correctly. But basic idea is you can take any existing spell add a mana to it and give it Augment.
Examples
Augmented Terror 2B
Instant
Augment - When you play this card you may discard a card to reduce the cost by up to 2. You may cast the discarded card for it's casting cost.
Destroy target nonblack nonartifact creature.
Now in the draft format playing that cost (without augment) for that effect is okay. Not great but could be worse. But when you play it in standard or modern the augment part kicks in. Suddenly you have a very nice removal tool that also basically gives cards flash.
Lighting strike augmented 2R
Instant
Augment - When you play this card you may discard a card to reduce the cost by up to 2. You may cast the discarded card for it's casting cost.
Deal 3 damage to target creature or player.
Now draft and when in a pinch you have a slightly worse Carbonize but in constructed you have a very cool lightning bolt varient.
Augmented Cancel 2UU
Instant
Augment - When you play this card you may discard a card to reduce the cost by up to 2. You may cast the discarded card for it's casting cost.
Counter target spell.
Decent draft counter, but in constructed it's probably the best closest thing to counterspell able to see print.
But the fun doesn't end there. This works with almost any spell of cost 2 or more.
Augmented Rhino 3GG
Creature - Rhino
Trample
Augment - When you play this card you may discard a card to reduce the cost by up to 2. You may cast the discarded card for it's casting cost.
4/4
Draft a 4/4 trample for 5 is not that bad. 5th or 6yh pick. But this guy can put on some serious heat as a 4/4 trample for 1GG.
Augmented Catalog 3U
Sorcery
Augment - When you play this card you may discard a card to reduce the cost by up to 2. You may cast the discarded card for it's casting cost.
Draw 2 cards.
This is pretty poor at first glance. But when you think about being able to discard a card and draw 2 cards it basically makes a bad draw card spell into an effecient card cycler. Especially when you can play the other card at cost. Play this and use Serium Visions as the augment.... 3 Mana to draw 3 and scry 2 is very nice. Counter burn becomes something if you use lightning bolt to augment this. Draw 2 and deal 3 for 3 Mana?
