I would like to see the Shadow cards returned and improved on.
For those who don't know, the Shadow's key word says, Creature can't block or be blocked by creatures without Shadow.
Its a 2 headed knife. Great for quick near unblockable damage.
We "might" see shadow return in the Dominaria set, but I'm not really certain since there are a lot of mechanics they could pick for that one. I do like shadow and thought that the cards that interacted with it were far more interesting than "unblockable" is today. Could you imagine how crazy it would be if they had both phasing and shadow in the same set?
shadow promotes a noninteractive game state so I wouldn't expect to see it in return to dominaria.
phasing was always a rules nightmare back in the day. I doubt we will see it in a standard legal set.
issues:
do phased in cards have summoning sickness (no)
if you gain control of opponents creature and it phases out, who controls it when it phases in (not sure)
does equipment attached to a creature phase with it?
does the equipment unequip when the creature phases out
etc...

Shadow wasn't as bad as you are making it sound. It was basically a strictly worse version of unblockable. At least assuming I'm not forgetting something with spell interactions.
It is a very aggressive mechanic though. We won't see it if they want more shield and sword kind of play.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
They could bring back Wall of Diffusion's mechanic. Flanking came back in the Time Spiral block, i could see Shadow coming back, though i would think they'll focus on more popular mechanics.
Phasing seems even less likely, though "nightmare" is definitely WAY too strong a term.
It would be interesting to see a focus on both Morph and Split-Second, especially if they interact they way they used to.
Cards like the Volver cycle (a la Rakavolver), with multiple kicker options (not to be confused with Multikicker) in off-shard color combos could be fun in contemporary Magic i think. The enemy-color versions of those nifty Odyssey rare lands like Sungrass Prairie.
And actually good tribal cards for some of the tribes that have fallen by the wayside over the last ~ 12 to 15 years.

They just couldn't put 7th edition into Modern because of the card borders? Seriously? Count me out.
Holy smokes, they actually reprinted things that are good without being rare! Spell Pierce is back in standard and the same with Duress and Opt of all things. And now Modern has both Serum Visions and Opt to utilize as one mana cantrips. Maybe we'll see a Mind Games reprint at some point along with Daze in standard?

Wow, I just realized that is the one card in my merfolk deck that doesn't have a modern border version. Kind of surprised we didn't see it in Iconic masters.

I'm actually glad we don't see direct colour hate like that anymore. It seems kind of random, if you draw that Gloom against a white player, is anyone having fun? And it makes for so "obvious" sideboards. Much better to have more generic sideboard options that goes against certain strategies than completely hosing on specific colours.

I saw the Mirage fetchlands mentioned earlier. I'd love to see those reprinted, the cycle completed, and complemented with simple taplands with land types (i.e. a Highland lake but with subtype Mountain Island.) Would be decent budget options.
Other than that, they should just reprint Fatal Push at the earliest opportunity. That card is a staple everywhere and will remain so. Having a good supply of it can only be a good thing.

There's interactions you missed, particularly with the blue shadows (Thalakos). If shadows were to come back, I'd like to see reprints plus new red and green shadows.

The Duress reprint makes me one happy Magic player.
I'd also like to see Land Tax reprinted in the near future.
Guess I'm SOL, I love Outpost and Excavations.
