Hi all, quick question regarding the correct way to communicate that I want to move to assigning first strike damage at Comp REL without giving away that I may have actions between first strike and regular damage. Specifically, if I say "move to assign damage" is it understood that I'm short cutting through all damage, or would I be able to say "move to assign damage?" and opponent says "sure" and then say "after first strike damage" to indicate I'm taking an action or is it assumed that by passing priority and saying "move to assign damage" I am offering a shortcut to the end of the assign combat damage phase?
There is no tournament shortcut in the list in M.T.R. 4.2 for when the active player passes during the declare blockers step. Therefore, the shortcut rules under C.R. 719.2 apply and you need to state exactly when the shortcut will end in case of ambiguity.
Note also that a combat damage step can be determined to be a "first strike" combat damage step only "as the combat damage step begins" (and not earlier); the additional combat damage step, if any, comes after, not before, what would otherwise be the "normal" combat damage step (C.R. 702.4b, 702.7b).
I would understand that you are passing to the next damage step. Keep in mind that if there is no first strike damage to be assigned there is no first strike damage step.
The game is moving from Declare Blockers to Assign Damage. If any creature has first/double strike, then a ''first strike damage step'' will occur.
Saying 'move to assign damage' implies 'move to the very next damage assignment step'. It does NOT imply 'move to the end of combat'.
You WILL, always, have time to do stuff before the 'regular' damage step.
