Apparently casual players do like them. As usual they chase the casual player, and as usual it will be a disaster they will go back on in a few months. Casual players may like promos of tokens, but they are still too busy playing sodding EDH and will NOT play competitive MTG in preference. When will WOTC get this through their thick, thick heads? Yes, there are casual players out there, but like the bottom of the ocean these players are out of reach- the experience they want playing MTG can never be offered in a formal environment, even FNM. If they print good promos like S. Visions and PTE then attendance at FNM goes up, but the extra bums on seats are competitive players. I will bet you the cash value of the foil double sided token promo that this will be reversed, but of course that is fifty pence.

People with belligerent signatures are trying to compensate for something....
Game Day getting a name change? Fine, whatever. But scheduling it later? I assume this is to build hype for the following set? Right now, Game Day gives you just enough time to test and brew with the new cards. It's a test of creativity and adaptability, especially the first Game Day after a rotation. If they move it to the tail end of a set's life cycle, it gives plenty of time to just wait and see what the best/strongest decks will be.
Yeah, you are absolutely correct. Game Day taking place soon after the set is released is a test of skill and creativity since the Meta isn't completely solved. Having Game Day right before the next set is released and the format is stale is just a contest of autopiloted netdecks.
I'd rather have a token than an unplayable piece of trash. Outside of a handful of extremely rare exceptions, FNM promos have been somewhere between "I guess it could be worse" and "here, you throw this away for me." So I guess as a whole, it's an upgrade?

They could easily reach the casual players if they made the promo sol ring or divining top.
Most EDH players don't care about double sided tokens.
Some of these decisions from Wizards have been absolutely mind-boggling. Who thought this was a good idea? So your FNM promos have been mostly garbage for a long time up until recently with Aether Hub and Fatal Push. So instead of saying "okay, we see the kinds of cards players like, we'll try harder to have those as FNM promos", they say "oh, players don't like FNM promos? I'm sure they'll like double sided tokens instead". It's like they have no understanding of what players want, going back to aftermath and invocation designs. Are they so out of touch with what the community wants? Huge step forward with Aether Hub and Fatal Push promos, 5 ginormous steps backwards with this move.
Not sure if this is the suits at Hasbro or just total incompetence from Wizards, but this is really ******* bad.
Are they actively trying to discourage me from attending FNM? A foil token? Who gives a *****? Sure, the double sided zombies from EMN were cool, but they're not that cool. Make better selections for promos, don't just throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Get yah Pichforks and torches. Hopefully the backlash will be big enough for them to take a hint. The amount of insults want to throw at Wizards will get the Mods atention.
Also yay foil Guay lands! Actually really want those, though I don't know what deck I'd put them in since the only decks I've tried to foil already have most of their basic lands foiled already.
I was just thinking about tokens the other day and how it would be nice to get some more foil ones as looking at the zombie.
But it would have to be something people would care about:
Spirits, goblins, humans, warriors, zombies, servos, angel, dragon (foil zombie and angel exist)
At the same time, only a small group would care.
Make 4 different double side each one run for 2 weeks for total of 8 weeks then shut them off. Better than a lot of the trash we've seen, but not stall out for months. Short window for each would make the hot trade for those who want, and worthwhile for those who don't care.
Even less incentive to play. Glad i stick to EDH, their management of the game is just awful on so many levels. I'd occasionally come in to draft or try and get a particular promo when it comes up, but now there is 0 incentive at all. Also if they are trying to fix standard and keep folks engaged, they should stop printing absolute garbage. Having a meta dissolve into 2-3 decks is super boring.

This seems really dumb. Why the hell would they think we would want tokens INSTEAD of promos? Like here I was thinking that the UW tokens Monument deck sounded like fun and now you say I can't even get a cool promo for going? So why wouldn't I just keep playing commander, a more fun format to me, with my friends at home instead of having to drive half an hour to play with people I don't know?
I've never done a game day so I dont really care about that but now it seems like I'm even less likely to do one now since it's just going to be the best one or two decks of the format instead of people brewing cool stuff at the beginning of the format.
And promos for open house seems to be in opposition to the goal of open house. Like now how many people who aren't bringing new playrrs in and just want the shiny are going to be showing up amd ruining a bunch of new players learning experience?
I don't care at all about double sided tokens. Such trash, but I bet a lot of players will come out for shiny Aether Hub (I did) and special shiny Fatal Push. Absolutely wrong move.
Bumping game day is also bloody horrible. So they want to wait until the format is completely solved (and sometimes stale) to have 'game day'?
Makes no sense at all. If anything they could have added an additional event to keep people 'engaged' and give away a new set card. I really enjoy current game day because you basically can roll in with a brew and win or do well after only getting a little pro input to viable decks. Bad move. Now it's all clone decks.
Open house and showdown are fine. Do they think very hard about these changes or is everything seat of the pants trash?
It almost feels like they are trying to give people less reasons to play the best deck. Like they want FNM to be powered down so that people feel there's more Standard diversity.

The push to appeal to casual vs competitive is seen all the time, and it never ends well when casual is the catered too pool. :]
As I have mentioned in other threads, I had hoped for foils of the C16 Rebecca Guay lands and now here they are. I have no idea how much supply there will be with the Standard Showdown packs, but I am all for that particular change. I will be on the lookout for anyone trading them or selling them and will pick up as many as possible.
I also understand the decision to remove Game Day and add Store Championship. This isn't a rebranding (I don't think); this is something completely new. It is meant to allow players to get one last "hurrah" with the current set before the next comes in and to get a sweet full art promo of the next set.
On the other hand, the FNM promo changes are awful. Foil double sided tokens are nice but not worth the attendance to FNM. In fact, Fatal Push is the sole reason I started attending FNMs. I didn't even do that when Path and Serum Visions were promos and all I play is Modern and Commander. I even built a Standard deck so I could play in all of September in case Modern doesn't fire.
I emailed Wizards with my praise about the foil lands and my criticism over the FNM promo changes. I encourage everyone on here to do the same. Or, if you like the changes, tell them that too. This thread so far has been pretty down on the changes, but that means if you do like them, tell that to Wizards. Here is the URL to their contact form:
Double sided tokens should just be a thing in every set. Saves on cardboard right? I mean....two tokens with one art or one token with two arts....its like things that should be common sense is completely lost to wizards......Im a token fanatic and this is just bizarre. This shouldn't be a special marketing ploy. It's smart design.....
Oh well. Two years now since my last FNM and Wotc still isn't trying to entice me back.
With cards in standard that are relevant for modern Wizards could easily use them for promos after Ixalan's release if they don't have a clue of what people want...
No, promo tokens will not drive people into FNM, if there is only it...
Want to give us promo tokens? Give them instead of those uncommuns full art cards that are given at game day(as the "door" prize)... those are not really looked after, are mostly limited cards that no one gives attention to.
Are u for real Wizards? Well I guess i don't have to look much into standard now
We were finally getting some decent promos coming up for FNM and now they made them worse. Why was this change needed? Yes, foil double sided tokens are neat and foil Guay lands are cool, but those are really just a novelty while actual useful cards like Aether Hub and Fatal Push can actually do things for players.
The first Championship game will be the weekend of 12/30, 12/31. This is New Year's Eve weekend. I know for a fact that many of the people that play at my shop have other plans that weekend. I wonder if they even noticed when they scheduled it.
Like most of you, I feel like getting rid of actual cards for FNM promos is sad and a step in the wrong direction. FNM promos have always been a staple to entry level competitive magic, a good way to draw new players into organized play and a nice feelgood bonus on top of a fun Friday night. Tokens? That`s a downer. I`d prefer a great double sided token over some of the worst actual card FNM promos, but going median on both, I`d take the card any day. And they were doing so good with them lately, what`s up?
I like postponing Game Day or whatever it`s called now. It was always a scramble to get the cards in time. Though I haven`t played Standard for a long time, so I`m not sure I have a vote anymore.
If the Open House promos are too attractive, they will draw the wrong crowd for the event. Just putting it out there.
The lands are awesome. Side note, I like basic lands a lot more for promos than tokens. You can always jam them in some deck or cube, so they always actually see play.

Guay's art is diminished by foil. It works against the delicate balance of color she paints with.
And ffs WotC. FNM were already barren with cards like Aether Hub in the prize pool, now that you give enfranchised players literally zero incentives to play nobody will set foot at their LGS.
I'm starting to feel WotC wants us to stop playing altogether so that there's nobody left to complain when they completely refurbish the IP to get their stupid Hollywood deal.
