FYI, Unsets in the past touched on the humor/cartooniness that sums up Hearthstone, today. The artwork wasn't always so serious. But yeah, Magic was doing it way before Hearthstone was ever a thing It's just been a while.
Very true. As the style is much more akin to a Saturday morning cartoon like from a Disney cartoon or episode from Loony Toons. Which is great for the kind of zany humor that both Hearhtstone and now Unstable want to go for.
There was only ever going to be one of three outcomes to this: WotC gives up, and contraptions never happen; contraptions get shoehorned into the game in an unsatisfying attempt to make people happy; or they only happen in silver-border land. Asking for contraptions was like Calvin & Hobbes fans asking for a write-up for the rules to Calvinball.
That's pretty easy. The only permanent rule is that the rules have to be different each time!
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
I'm loving the art. Reminds me of all those wacky novel covers from elementary school haha. Love it! I play the original Show and Tell because I love that style.
So, Future Sight effectively has twoUn-cards in the set now? (Yes I know the first case was a functional reprint, but still, not a lot of records in the department to break there).
Sometimes I wonder if it would have been better if they had functionally reprinted Steamflogger Boss instead. The reference would be weaker, yes, but we wouldn't be stuck with a (not-basic-land) black border oddity and well, we can run 8 copies instead (and it'll feel a lot more "creative" building cross-borders by your own approach rather than having it simply reprinted, but then again knowing the crazy secondary market of ours...)
I LOVE the art, it's so silly it would have been offputting for normal magic cards, but using an unset as an opportunity to go crazy with the art direction is great
kinda sad theyre wasting really good artstyle on an unplayable set and leave the normal magic with generic boring *****
Well if the reception for it is quite positive, they might consider tapping into this art style again for black border magic in the future.
If they do decide to use this kind of style in normal sets again, I would hope they don't overuse it.
The "realism" they use in normal sets, to me, have their place in setting the tone of what's going on.
You have a good point, they can't use this too often, but the art does have its place.
Take the art for League of Dastardly Doom, or even Explosioneers or Crossbreed Labs. For the League that art looks like it could fit into Innistrad or perhaps for Izzet on Ravnica while for Explosioneers it could be in a Core Set or possibly Lorwyn, and as for Crossbreed Labs that could be possibly be seen with Simic on Ravnica.
You are right that they can't place the art style like this all willy nilly, but it can certainly fit if given the right areas. This type of art could really show up in Core Sets or products with new cards that don't need a specific place to fit in, like Commander or Planechase.

Plus we can have cards that are meant to represent the Toon Plane for Unstable in black border. Which means more Squirrel cards. As it was really hard, apparently, for them to justify Squirrel cards in normal sets. Like we could have a Squirrel Rigger that creates basically an Acorn Catapult when it enters play.
Would that GW legend be the "chimpion" of Crossbreed Labs? Eyes that pretty do not belong on a chimp. Well, unless that chimp is Candy Kong, I guess.
I like the stylization going on here. I would guess that Steamflogger Boss is going to be part of Goblin Explosioneers, which means the rest of the Rigger cycle will play out thus:
White - Order of the Widgets
Blue - Agents of S.N.E.A.K.
Black - League of Dastardly Doom
Green - Crossbreed Labs
I wonder if the League will have over-the-top death traps?

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I get that it's an Un-set and that, from what I can see at least, they're only doing allied color pairs. But the flipping Crossbreed Labs are Selesnya? Seems very Simic to me.
You make the mistake of using Ravnicas Guild System to other worlds.

I'm sure even folks at WotC agree with this,
but they didn't seem to want to develop themes for the enemy colors

If Contraptions is well recepted and is not a no-no mechanic, we could see them in black border

I wish we had some of this art back in normal Magic sets. It's a rarity when we get stuff like this nowadays.

Well, we already knew the symbol...
Modern: UB Zombie hunt UB - WR Boros tokens WR - BGW Treefolk tribal BGW
Commander: UR Mizzix, a Storm of spells UR (Decklist)
This'll be fun.
Kudos, WotC!
Cheers!

It's not sad for me since I don't share your opinion on art.
I also like that they use these un-sets as a sort of release valve for whatever extremely crazy ideas run through their heads.
If they do decide to use this kind of style in normal sets again, I would hope they don't overuse it.

For a "funny" set this art style is totally fine, the entire set is more cartoony as it is.
In other sets this art style would be highly disruptive for any form of immersion.

I really really hope we get our SQUIRREL planeswalker in this set.
Would be marvelous.

Nice that Future Sight "predicted" the third Un set thru the Futureshifted Rigger
