Can i ask when Urza used green and black magic?
I hope to not go off topic too much
Just off the top of my head, during his time in Yavimaya getting the Weatherseed, and during his time fighting for Yawgmoth, respectively. Not to mention all the spells he cast that were undoubtedly 5-color.
And the most legendary character in the old era of magic finally gets his card... and it is just a gag card in a gag set. Good way to piss the vorthos community wizards (or maybe not?)
Not so sure Most Vorthos know that Blind Seer, and Karn Liberated were already Urza cards.....
and it seems like his +1 is a random existing planeswalker's + ability, his -1 is a random - ability, and his ultimate is a random ultimate. edit: Though there does seem to be some differences, such as Sarkhan Unbroken's -2 creating Gold dragons instead of Red dragons.
It seems that the minus abilities are a mix of normal minus abilities and upgraded minus abilities. One of the abilities reanimates a permanent from any graveyard which is upgraded version of Nissa, Vital Force's -3.
well....with all of these abilities i have to say...playing him will put you aHEAD in the game...you're opponents are really gonna have to put their HEADs together to get around him....i mean he just helps make any plan come to a HEAD, but he definitely shows that card development is going HEADs, (but not shoulders) ahead of the competition....other head puns

If you’re thinking about complaining about this card, please don’t. This is why we don’t have nice things.
I'll complain only because I don't want to see this card or anything remotely like it in black border version as Maro hinted on Twitter. As far as un-sets go, I think this is an interesting experiment but for mainstream play? Not interested.
So he just do already existing effects? Really disappointing
No, there's some new stuff in there. Honestly, I just wish Wizards would have been upfront with the nature of Urza's pool of abilities, which are, quite frankly, still extremely impressive. A bunch of people already guessed that he would have the powers of every other planeswalker, but letting people's imaginations run wild just hurts folks with poor expectation management.
People focus on the abilities themselves, and how they are black border but the important point here is the variance and its effect on gameplay. The variance here is huge and he will change games in any direction in totally unpredictable ways, which is the main point. I knew the importance of variance, but watching the unstable draft with Maro on Game Knights really put it up in my face. Just with d6 rolls, the games became quite impredictable and crazy swingy, so imagine with this (d20 lists).
In other words, the variance on this is already unstable enough, not allowing any strategic planning whatsoever. "Standard" abilities keep the complexity of the card in check from a gameplay perspective, which is a nice design. A d20 random list of silver-bordered abilities would be too much. It's the same (sane) design logic behind the fact that each Very Cryptic Command and Everythingamajig have around 1 silver-bordered ability and the rest are black-bordered: complexity control in design. Unstable has a much higher tolerance to complexity than standard sets, but it is not infinite.
WHAT!? This is it? Random effects from other planeswalker cards!?
Am I the only one who's gravely disappointed by this? Maybe I was being naïve, but I was honestly hoping they'd give Urza 30+ abilities that fit the character's flavor and power set.
Up to date, almost all existing planeswalker cards had abilities that were in line with the character, their role in the story and their magic specialization. There were only a few exceptions and those were mostly poorly received. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Liliana of the Dark Realms.) This cards had great potential, but as it is, it REALLY DOESN'T DO URZA ANY JUSTICE AT ALL!!!
I'll *head to* Blogatog (pun intended) and tell MaRo how betrayed the Vorthos in me feels. If you feel the same way, let your voice be heard too! Maybe if enough players express their disapproval of how poorly this cards reflects Urza's personality and skills, the website will receive an update. That's the good thing about it: the abilities can be changed at a moment's notice.
Is this a joke post? I genuinely can't tell if you are trolling, but I will play anyways. First off, they DID give Urza 30+ abilities. Also they won't change the card just because people complain. Lastly, how else would you design the card? You can't fit everything onto one card with what you are asking for here. Are you complaining just to complain because internet?

Looks like you can use paper and a d20 if you don't have internet. So that's nice.
Edit: not really that simple actually. Maybe there's a way to set it up randomly from paper though.
You could draw the abilities from a hat, I guess. It probably wouldn't be that hard to just set up your own random number generator on an offline app, too.

Huh. Looks like I was right the first time. I wonder why all the abilities were posted twice. That's what jacked me up. Guess I should have read a bit closer.

My favorite flavor text: Time of Heroes
Feel free to tell me yours!
I think people are disappointed because it's nothing new. Ot's just a collage of already existing abilities. When the site was online i tried a -6, excited to see which kind of effect i would have got:
"Create three 1/1 black Assassin creature tokens with Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, that player loses the game."
... that's Vraska. That's not new, not exciting and not urza
They said they were going to change the abilities ove time and I kind of hope it's more "let's emulate holiday promos on Christmas, silver-bordered on April 1st - all non-natural numbers on March 14th, go all-out green token creation on St. Patrick's and all burn on New Year's Eve etc." and less "Yeah, now let's replace the old Vraska ultimate with the new Vraska's ultimate."
Fingers crossed.

I suppose that can be considered uncreative using nothing but other planeswalker abilities, but again, how else would they design the card to meet the insane power level expectations that Urza has that would work even in jokey silver bordered games. Like what do you want, +50 loyalty win the game shred up your opponents cards, eat your opponent's lunch and steal their girlfriend? A real Urza card is impossible to please everyone power level wise and flavor wise, so this is a good middle ground even if it is a little uncreative. I still think it is cool to have every Planeswalker ability as it is over the top powerful, funny, and fits with Urza's character. I feel like most of you are just complaining to complain cuz that is the typical MtGS thing to do. There is rarely any genuine criticism here, just on the contrary to be on the contrary cuz internet.

Honestly i just wanted new abilities, i don't care if they are "powerful enough". Right now you can basically take 20 planeswalker, shuffle them and use them instead of the site. That's Urza.
BORING.
It's also boring that they didn't even try to "fix" some abilities to fit Urza's personality. He put octopus and dragon tokens into play. He becomes a dragon. Why? Why not constructs and golems or whatever, more fitting to Urza's personality and background?
Sure, but would you have been honestly satisfied with whatever new abilities they would have given Urza as a planeswalker card? It probably would have been too overpowered or underpowered to someone like yourself with extremely high expectations. It is virtually impossible to design an Urza card that fits flavor and power level wise.

Now I am not a vorthos any longer nor was I even a rather large one in the past, but I hope for more Urza centric abilities added in the future. Didn't he pull a Jurassic Park and brought the Thran back as the Metathran? Why not have a plus ability that creates a metathran token. They could have a callback to his war with Phyrexia and have an emblem that says players can't gain poison counters and can't pay life for cost or abilities. I can understand that his abilities reflecting other planeswalkers is a nod to him being the first prominent one but I think he needs new abilities that are a little more specific to him, but maybe they are going to add those later.

Not every complaint made on the internet is unreasonable, and not everyone making those complaints is being a perpetually-dissatisfied diva. None of the complaints about Urza's abilities so far have been about the power level or about the randomized format of the card, despite your assumptions to the contrary. Maybe actually listen to what people are saying before dismissing them outright.

wat? are you even reading the posts in the thread?
the majority of whats popping up as criticism has nothing to do with how powerful it is and instead criticizes that his abilities aren't in any way unique once you get beyond 'lol its random!' because they borrow from every other walker.
personally, i have a bit of issue with that too. for some reason urza is always painted as this planeswalker god, but he really wasn't. on top of that, borrowing abilities from existing walkers ties into his character in zero ways. yeah, its a joke set, but the design feels so lazy.

and it seems like his +1 is a random existing planeswalker's + ability, his -1 is a random - ability, and his ultimate is a random ultimate. edit: Though there does seem to be some differences, such as Sarkhan Unbroken's -2 creating Gold dragons instead of Red dragons.
[180 classic cube]
Yeah, his +1 ability is chosen at random from a pool of all other planeswalker +1 abilities
His -1 ability is chosen at random from a pool of all other planeswalker -1 abilities.
His -6 ability is chosen at random from a pool of all other planeswalker ultimate abilities.
EDIT: It's not all planeswalker abilities in the pool, but maybe 10-12 of them? Ajani has, like, 4 different versions represented, and Jace has 2.
It's Sarkhan Unbroken with the color changed from Red to Gold. Though he does also have:
-1: Target player sacrifices two creatures.
Which as best as I can tell is supposed to be Liliana of the Veil's -2, so there can be some differences between the original walker and Urza.

I'll complain only because I don't want to see this card or anything remotely like it in black border version as Maro hinted on Twitter. As far as un-sets go, I think this is an interesting experiment but for mainstream play? Not interested.
+1: a random planeswalker ability from the "+" abilities
-1 a random planeswalker ability from the "-" abilities
-6 a random planeswalker ability from the "Ultimate" abilities
In other words, the variance on this is already unstable enough, not allowing any strategic planning whatsoever. "Standard" abilities keep the complexity of the card in check from a gameplay perspective, which is a nice design. A d20 random list of silver-bordered abilities would be too much. It's the same (sane) design logic behind the fact that each Very Cryptic Command and Everythingamajig have around 1 silver-bordered ability and the rest are black-bordered: complexity control in design. Unstable has a much higher tolerance to complexity than standard sets, but it is not infinite.
Edit: not really that simple actually. Maybe there's a way to set it up randomly from paper though.
Feel free to tell me yours!
You could draw the abilities from a hat, I guess. It probably wouldn't be that hard to just set up your own random number generator on an offline app, too.
On an other note, MaRo ruled that you can reactivate Urza if an effect you get has no target.
Huh. Looks like I was right the first time. I wonder why all the abilities were posted twice. That's what jacked me up. Guess I should have read a bit closer.
Feel free to tell me yours!
Finally a good white villain quote: "So, do I ever re-evaluate my life choices? Never, because I know what I'm doing is a righteous cause."

Sure, but would you have been honestly satisfied with whatever new abilities they would have given Urza as a planeswalker card? It probably would have been too overpowered or underpowered to someone like yourself with extremely high expectations. It is virtually impossible to design an Urza card that fits flavor and power level wise.
wat? are you even reading the posts in the thread?
the majority of whats popping up as criticism has nothing to do with how powerful it is and instead criticizes that his abilities aren't in any way unique once you get beyond 'lol its random!' because they borrow from every other walker.
personally, i have a bit of issue with that too. for some reason urza is always painted as this planeswalker god, but he really wasn't. on top of that, borrowing abilities from existing walkers ties into his character in zero ways. yeah, its a joke set, but the design feels so lazy.
