First iteration of a decklist. Definitely a work in progress. This deck is based around caging one amazing target, Chainer, Dementia Master
Could use some tweeking, trying to make this my #1 as Mairsil has got me sold on the best grixis cmdr. I really like how the design captures the story for this character. Extremely versatile and powerful ability.
I would like to make room for Tree of Perdition and Disciple of Griselbrand
Maybe some more haste enablers.
So many choices!
Update: Removed alot, added busted rocks and more card draw.
Having a caged aetherling, Mairsil acts as a psudo-Jhoira but being the only thing that will survive (hopefully). No other commander to date that I know of can blink itself and follow with a massive board wipe with land destruction. Its plan 'C'. Though Death Cloud would work too I suppose.
Also, Mairsil could be a 'Pretend' Jhoira deck. If people see her in the commmand zone, you cant expect alot of hate, could focus the deck around her, like Chainer, and abuse the hell out of it. Nobody would see that coming.
Ahh good catch, force of habit I guess. With Sire and Mindslicer the downside is real.
Will replace with Ancient Excavation instead. More selective looting and instant speed.
Blink/Obliterate is 6RRU Enter is 12, four being blue and hard to cast here.
Point with Obliterate/Blink is getting another cage trigger, with everything dead. If I can cage a Tree/Lotus+Chainer, im in a great spot. Still in prototype mode here, tomorrow I can get some games in. Reminds me to switch Prismatic Geoscope for Gilded Lotus
I think it would be good to fit a single creature to start recurring your instants and sorceries, archaeomancer would fit the chainer theme best, but dralnu, lich lord would also work very nicely if you can cage him.
You're right on most those, I dont own a sphinx. Rather torn between going Cdh(would be grixis turn 1 Jin)and keeping the tutors/opression low. Razaketh definity belongs here, it ends games, can be caged and also a sac engine. This list is in paper only, so ill get some playtesting today. Looks like alot of fun that has multiple ways of wining. Let everyone know what changes after, but till then
Out: Liliana, Combustible Gearhulk
In: Notion Thief Razaketh, the Foulblooded
The Scarab God exiles the target and makes a lousy token...with Chainer you can sacrifice and recur all game long.
Having Gary and Kokusho will quickly end a game.
This deck is reanimator focused, so getting Chainer caged is Plan A for me.
Playing some games yesterday, I dont like that the scarab god exiles the target, but ill concede that I need the redundancy in the deck. One game I did not find any Buried Alive or such tutors, never saw Chainer. Did get Tree of Perdition and had I played properly could of won the game. I 'Treed' the wrong player, killing them, then died to Ashnod's Altar + Dictate of Erebos.
Brings me to another point, Dictate wrecked me. So Im going to put in some more versatile removal cards, counterspells are not the best because the deck is mana hungry, maybe 1 more.
Ill tweek it and post the changes.
loving this brew. I will be following it and I might build it for myself since its the kind of casual fun deck i can play with the precon+ group I have at work. They will be mad, but impressed at wins haha.
So is your goal to include combos for wins? or wins via beats? Any particular ways to close out a game quickly so that wraths dont harm us too badly?
Played a few games, deck was very stale so chnged it around. Tree of Perdition is still killing people, same with the Praetors. Mairsil has become more of a mid-late game threat, once the graveyards are full. I have updated the Original List.
Took out alot, even Aetherling! And with it: Obliterate
Added my fav, Vedalken Orrery + Leyline
Added more card draw, it was desperately needed.
Put in Vindictive Lich as a recurring threat/control element.
So deck can win a couple ways now.
Combat Damage,
Recurring Gary/Kokusho/Lich,
Tree of Perdition,
Altar of Dementia Mill
Torment of Hailfire.
So got to play one game with Mairsil, and it was a durdly one.
Must of drawn 15 cards from group hug before finding a board wipe....which was desperately needed.
So wipe plus Sire of Insanity sealed the deal, won the game.
Need to add 1x board wipe, 1x land/gy recursion, get rid of By Force, probably with Meltdown. The time I got By Force there were 18 artifacts in play, inc. Tanglewire, Caged Sun (blue), Skullclamp(elfball) among others.
Vandalblast would have been nice,
Probably slot in Null Rod since I can cage my Gilded lotus / Nevinyarrl's Disk.
Edit: Meltdown it is, null rod would hose me too much.

A few cards that I have been finding bonkers in my Chainer-centered Mairsil brew:
Sensei's Divining Top - Particularly when you don't have Aetherling, this is a great card for resiliency and repeated caging. Shows up often if you also run Trinket Mage to fetch it.
Soldevi Adnate - I find that most of the things that we want to repeatedly bring back with Chainer are Black, so great to have this one caged. In fact, games can end real fast with something like Basalt Monolith on top. Begin turn with Kokopuffs in play, sac it for mana then untap and bring it back with the mana for next turn. Drain four times an orbit.
Memnarch - Great for stealing other players' mana bases.
Nivix Guildmage - Can be expensive to fork a spell for this price, but both abilities are solid.
Illusionist's Stratagem/Ghostly Flicker - I see that you have Dualcaster in here, so thought I'd mention these. Good on their own for defense and value, and also combo with Dualcaster and something like Venser or Gary for a win.
How hard is Top to kill in EDH? Now make it part of your commander. Yeah, thats sick.
I dont usually like top because it slows things down, esp with newer players or those who need to explore every option at every interaction. In this deck as a cage target is awesome. Kinda obvious but great idea I totally looked over because of my bias.
Simple swap then Sensei's Divining Top <---- Mimic Vat
I like Aetherling but didn't find a need for multiple/repeatable cages.(different deck ideas) I have to agree with you about the haste, I'm finding my deck does not require it much, I have Boots, Leyline, Orrery and Anger. I finally found a Mirage Mirror, so im testing that out, I cannot remember what I swapped with it but will get some games in tomorrow with a more casual crowd to see how things work out.

I have red, haste, sneak attack and Mairsil. Tree makes more sense. Sometimes you need exile and Shift is great against top of deck tutors.
Point with Obliterate/Blink is getting another cage trigger, with everything dead. If I can cage a Tree/Lotus+Chainer, im in a great spot. Still in prototype mode here, tomorrow I can get some games in. Reminds me to switch Prismatic Geoscope for Gilded Lotus
consecrated sphinx over sire of stagnation
bojuka bog over a basic land
Some of the weaker cards I think:
torment of hailfire
Liliana, Heretical Healer
Ancient Excavation
Some cards I think are stronger:
vampiric tutor
Razaketh, the Foulblooded
I would try and fit one more mass removal spell, one of these:
blasphemous act
damnation
toxic deluge
I think it would be good to fit a single creature to start recurring your instants and sorceries, archaeomancer would fit the chainer theme best, but dralnu, lich lord would also work very nicely if you can cage him.
