I think the fear of good reprints kept Modern prices under control for over a year. Between MM15 and MM17, every tier deck got a solid reprint or multiple reprints, so collectors/stores were selling to avoid the next price crash and players kept pushing out purchases until the next Masters set. When Iconic Disaster and Tree Masters couldn't continue delivering on the reprints, things pretty much swung in the entire opposite direction.
If there are fewer players, then there is less demand, hence prices will drop. This is literally the very first, most fundamental principle of markets. It was a bizarre statement.
I don't know anything about the overall size of the Modern player base but personally I tend to interpret rising prices (often in the face of reprints) as being pretty fair evidence that Modern is growing, not shrinking.
yeah if the format were shrinking and only "dedicated players" remain, then they would already own format staples because you know...they are dedicated...
also you are implying the only reason the metagame is diverse is because of the population size. which just isnt the case.

It a Colt post, you would have to ask him. It makes zero sense to me that less players = higher prices.
These statements perfectly sum up this one-sided argument misunderstanding.
In other news, where do ya'll see the prices of Chandra TOD & Hazoret settling between now and Standard rotation? Both have shown up in Modern/eternal tournament play and both have been re-printed in the new challenger deck product. I don't think it has even been a week since they were released, but like many anticipated, it appears that the Chandra/Haz deck is the clear favorite and all product displays that I've come across have consisted only of the other decks in the lineup. While I don't know if there's been any official word on whether this is a print-to-demand product or the assortment of decks per display unit, I feel like it's safe to assume WotC anticipated that there'd be a disproportionate amount of demand. Thus, I'm curious whether or not this will impact the amount of product re-ordered by retailers if only one or two decks of the bunch end up being sought after? In theory, a $30 MSRP should end up creating a concrete ceiling for the values of Chandra/Haz throughout the duration of the print run, however, if stores don't re-order product b/c they have X amount of the other decks collecting dust then that may not be the case.
I sold my playset of Chandras following the challenger deck announcement and planned on buying back in once she dips below the $10 mark. Hazoret is already teetering over that ledge, so I expect Chandra to get there eventually as more supply enters the market. The only situation I can see where she stays above $10 is one where Haz continues to drop in value, essentially allowing Chandra's value to fill the gap and justify the $30 MSRP.
Goblin Guide is up to $25. Looks like what I said about burn being a substitute deck is going out the window slowly but surely. Guess I need to buy those red fetches quick. Hell I'd rather play a budget version and win them.
I wonder what the supplies are like of allied fetches vs enemy fetches. If anyone were to discover that the print runs between onslaught and khans was anything remotely close to zendikar and m17...well anybody looking at the former as the budget option would find themselves in trouble really quickly.
Looks like the highest priced Khans fetchlands right now are those that can fetch R, mire and foothills are both close to 25$. Could this be because of Hollow One popularity?
And also looks like a very recent price increase, just a week ago... I could have sworn foothills are only 17$ at SCG.
I mean it's hollow one, jund, burn that could all use those, and you're talking about arguably three of the top six decks in the format. GW and UW have always been better in terms of price whereas UB varies greatly, like it was I think the most expensive when grixis shadow started to take off, plus it has more legacy application than the others.
It almost looks like a buyout - someone or a few parties are buying them up below the $20 mark. If modern land buyouts are happening then those of us with budget restrictions are collectively ****ed.
I went in hard on blue ktk fetches (delta and strand) during 2015. Wish I had gone in on mire or foothills, but I guess that's what I get for thinking blue would be in demand...

The smart money at the time was on Blue for Legacy. Green for Modern. Red being the top color came pretty much out of nowhere. At this point though, you might as well hold... it could even be a good time to go deeper on the spec. The format is cyclical, and eventually the top colors will shift around.
Not to mention I wouldn't be surprised if increased demand led to all the fetches breaking $20 within a year. Every rotation, newer standard players will get frustrated, and some will either look to switch to modern or to add modern to their repertoire. I'm curious to see price changes in November when that fully takes hold.
i figured black would be the spec color of choice. i didnt really spec, but i grabbed deltas and mires without a second thought even though i wasnt planning to play them much. black is a close second in legacy, and discard has always been powerful in modern.

Makes sense. If somebody came to me and said "I want to play modern, I have no staples, but cash to burn," I would first ask them what deck they wanted to build. If they didn't know, and just wanted to get a collection started while they decided, I'd tell them to buy fetches, then shocks, then fastlands, then zendikar manlands. Real estate is king, bro.

At the time, Infect, Junk, Jund, RUG Twin, RUG Delver, GW value, Knightfall, and some others were the big decks. Black was definitely the #2 color, but it wasn't until the decline of Goyf and the rise of Tasigur/Angler that black became the #1, then it got overtaken by red. It's still the #2. In legacy, regardless of how true blue being the best color is, it's by far the most popular color.
On another topic. Anyone here going to buy the new Karn from Dominaria. Would it be wise to buy right away, or wait a month or two?
4 mana, +1 draw a card, and high loyalty to start is far above curve as a CA engine. It's not worth $35, and it's not going to redefine the meta, but it's definitely playable. This gives CA to every color, and that's not something they normally have.
well baby karn is for sure going to see play in standard, likely see sideboard play in a few existing modern decks, and has a pretty small chance of being a maindeck card in a yet to be realized deck.

You can always run blooming marsh instead of black cleave cliffs great alternative
it's not in anyway, the advantage of of blackcleave cliffs is the ability to bolt or discard turn 1, for no life. I can't think of any deck that needs green on turn 1 for no life that also needs discard. Some sort of BUG midrange with dorks maybe? Lantern? But they don't need red.

Ok, thanks. I guess there's no reason to buy right away. Will wait for the price to settle down first.
Sure they can.
