Manalith is playable in what? Remember this is a thread in MODERN, not Commander/EDH.
Oh, I was totally only talking about Commander. Outside of Claim/Fame and maybe the exile land, I think the whole set is basically trash for Modern.
Okay thanks. You may want to requisite your comments on certain cards with that since this is a Modern thread. I think the line of this thread is mostly to evaluate if a card has a spot in competitive Modern. I think you'll be able to buy that foil Manalith play set on the cheap. Thanks for the response.
Leave the man with his brews, no need to receber him that this is the modern forum and not EDH
He/she has answered. But this is a MODERN thread. Comments on playability should be confined to that line of thought. There are other forums on the site to discuss EDH and that is best left there. Personally I don't want to search around threads for discussion of Modern, I want to come to the right spot. More organized.
Playing since 1994: Currently MAGS (HomeBrew),Standard & Pauper (Pioneer and Modern are degenerate trash formats)
STOP using "dude/bro" as a pejorative or insult. Grow up.
Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
How realiable would be The Locust God with dire undercurrents in a control shell, yes kind of junk but a 2 cards combo kill that can pass under the bridge

That seems like a super slow thing to get online for what seems like very little pay off.

Still not as good as Darksteel Ingot, not remotely close to Chromatic Lantern, and slower than Talismans and Signets.... but they will look SWEET in foil!
I might be taking the bait here, but you know you could have grabbed foil Manaliths for the last 6 years now, right?
You hit the operative word there, "close". At 4 cmc I'd say maybe on the fringes. Plus there a lot of better ways in Modern to draw a card than its VERY conditional special ability. Spending 5 mana on one card in Modern needs to net you a significant outcome. This just doesn't do it. As you said, close, but not close enough.

Like I said. EDH. I've been jokingly saying "I think any legendary above 4 mana is made for edh now." for a few years.
But After these last 2 sets. I think I'm not wrong at all. Hell Id change that to if its over 3 mana its made for edh. Back in the day they used to make the word "legendary" a draw back on constructed playble cards so they can be pushed, but you wouldnt run 4 copies of it in a deck. Now they push cards in legendary and give it a high mana cost, knowing it effects edh. They have been doing more and more of that for the past few years.
I think we can clearly see that being done more today then ever. The rares and mythics that are over costed and or legendary, clearly aimed to EDH. They say things like "Each Opponent, at each upkeep." We have the rares and mythics that are bad in eternal, but apperently standard aimed, stuff like murder for walkers. then there are rares and mythics that cost 3 or under and are pushed, clearly printed for "Maybe eternal hit?" They havent really perfected that last bit and usually nerfed it in dev.
When I see a legendary card with a huge mana cost I think "is this a good Goryo's Vengeance target?" Ironically the twobest Goryo's Vengeance targets are banned in Commander.

Sure, but overwhelmingly, "each" and good legendaries have a higher chance of seeing play in commander, not modern. A few cases are different, doesnt mean thats the norm.
This set has two cards that interest me and both cost just one black mana.
Claim / Fame is a cool effect, cheap enough to be playable and also hits most of the best creatures in the format. I don't think it will see mainboard play but I do bet we'll see it as a 2 or 3 of in several sideboard.
Lilianas Defeat is the other card I like from the set. It very efficiently deals with some of the best creatures and the best pws in the format.
Everything else seems like EDH chaff, although I bet Firebrand Archer will end up as some sort of combo finisher

Firebrand Archer is going to make a lot of waves in pauper. It's basically another version of grapeshot except on a creature. Honestly, it's what I wanted Ruthless Sniper to be like instead of what they actually made him.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!
Official Ixalan previews are out, so time to revive this thread since it was covering them!
Out of the previewed cards so far, I like Hostage Taker (nonzero chance of permanently taking the creature you exiled by casting the exile), Entrancing Melody (it's actually a sorcery, but it can permanently nab creatures for somewhat cheap without tapping you out next turn!), Settle the Wreckage (attacking creature exiling Plague Wind, but they get basic lands), Sorcerous Spyglass (Pithing Needle you can aim better pre-board), Tocatli Honor Guard (I suspect some Devoted Vizier decks may use this guy to get a leg up on Persist Vizier variants and RGx Valakut), and Jace, Cunning Castaway (costs only 1UU, 3 loyalty, -2 makes a 2/2, has a +1 that can dig, -5 makes two of him--let the 2/2's go wild!) the most.
I have to say, I really hate the flavor and art of the new Jace. They just tried way too hard to squeeze a Jace into this Pirate set ... hmmm, let's create a Pirate Jace! Jace has this powerful mystique about him, more so than any other walker IMHO ... and this one just completely misses the mark.
Art-wise, I find it a bit humorous how Wizards got Jace to take off some of his shirt and make more fangirls go squee while making the lack of shirt be entirely justified/accidental/an occupational hazard.
In the meantime, I'm trying to break Sunbird's Invocation. The CA is insane, but why does it have to be a whopping 6 mana...
Maybe the most significant addition right now is the adjustment of the planeswalker uniqueness rule into a Legendary rule. Now I can finally play 4 Liliana of the Veil, 1 Liliana, the Last Hope, and 1 Liliana, Death's Majesty in my deck guilt-free! And maybe Gideon Tribal will become a thing! On the other hand, I find the flavour of maintaining 3 versions of Liliana at once (or any one walker) disgusting...

As for other cards, Kopala, Warden of Waves might be good in Merfolk as their super-Diffusion Sliver.
