I have 18 staple modern decks and 5 brews,I never play one more than a day or two before switching to a diffrent one.I feel like I should be focusing on one deck and master it but how do you decide what deck? I don't have a set style or preference, I like them all.
I am looking at so many diffrent threads for all my diffrent decks it takes me hours to stay up to date.
A few decks are missing a few staples or one ofs and I start building/acquiring new decks before the last one is done.
I'm curious if anyone else has had the same issues and if they found a solution.
It's a very expensive habit and I recently started playing on mtgo and it's costing me even more,i like playing online but papers my passion. I say I have no willpower and that's my excuse but I love the game so dearly.
So I don't want to sell any,at all, should I continue building new top decks until I have them all,the theory being that if any new ones show up ill already own all the cards. Some cards like opal and lily I don't like but I'm contemplating buying some again just because the top decks are playing them.
Thanks for listening and any insight from all you other magic junkies is greatly appreciated.
It's tough to pick a favorite deck in a format with so many options. My solution was to narrow it to just 3 decks representing three different play styles and finish those before doing anything else. Modern rewards format and deck mastery a lot, so the more you stick with something, the better you'll generally perform.
To pick the decks, I chose a combo deck, a big mana deck, and a control deck because there was very minimal playstyle overlap between them so I'd always have something to suit my Modern mood. From there, I chose decks with consistent results over a two year period with card bases overlapping other decks; most of Esper Control folds into any other blue-based Modern deck. Or cheap card bases; Ad Naus is quite cheap.
Well I have a few that are high on the list like tron, which is complete, I run ugin because I don't like karn and I think ugin is better.
I loved my twin deck so I currently have grixis DS put together because I had all the cards.
Taking turns I really like but my opponents get salty sitting there doing nothing although they hate my lantern deck more.
Burn is my first deck and it's something I could do without I think same with soul sisters.
Living end is fun but like my dredge deck GY hate is an issue lately.
Elves I haven't touched for ages yet it used to be all I played for years.
Idk,its tough.I like so many of them and 90% are complete staple netdecks which took a lot (time/money)to build. Maybe that's why it's so hard to choose.Sometimes I went months before I could get all the cards I needed then the format changes gears and I switch decks a month after.lol.
Twin in modern was my favorite but since I opened my store and started playing 15 games daily I've ventured into other (modern) decks and was bit hard by the modern bug,i used to play legacy only up until 3 years ago. Playing the game since the end of beta.
So I guess I'm going to have to pick one or two of each and try to refrain from being a hoarder. I don't know if I would/could part with any though. Havent played legacy in years and have no intention of playing it again but I am reluctant to part with those decks too,the lands alone took me forever to accumulate.
Thanks for replying, been stuck in a rutt lately and I think it's because I'm not focusing on a particular deck, nice to hear from someone who's had this plight, too many choices rather than limited choices.lol
Lol.just magic cards.
I have a few hundred thousand...lol.
But I do give a lot away, usually when I know someone needs something I have.
The other day I gave a friend a playset of utopia sprawls because I thought it would help his deck.
If you were a serious player, having 18 decks would be ideal since you can basically pick whichever is the right deck for a given tournament and prepare with it for the week or two before the tourney.
If you are just a casual player (FNM), you can probably just keep a rotation of decks to keep it fresh.
Keeping stats on your decks, matchup analysis and such. That way you can play as many different of your decks as you want, but then judge them by fact over feal. If you find one that doesn't feel great but scraps by every game to have a high win percent, then that is probably the deck for you. Hiding behind tough games are often the best decks.
To the OP. Have you tried having a "pet deck", the one that get more attention than the others. For example, my pet deck is the BG homebrew in my sig... the best deck that I own is a complete affinity, but in fnm's I bring the pet deck more often... because I enjoy playing it. Have stopped building Modern decks, after I've become busy improving the homebrew.
I have one deck for each format I play. My main format is modern in which I play BW Tokens, my issue might be I've got too many cards for the deck than I can run because I've got the cards for like 2-3 entire sideboards. Not necessarily an issue though cause I've got the cards for any possible metagame.

I did the same thing.
One deck and all sort of sideboard cards that can be used with it.

I played magic for twenty years since beta but I didn't play modern until two years ago. I have so many cards that when I discovered net decks similar to mine I started building them as net decks, next thing I know I have over twenty of them. Just built skred red and tooth and nail last few days to add to the collection.
I think I might be addicted to netdecking now. Sometimes I feel like I'm out of control.lol
Tron is probably the closest to the deck I like the most to play. Taking turns is probably the next fave but I get so much grief for playing it from opponents that I rarely do anymore to keep the salt down.
Dredge I loved with grave troll, they banned it and I moved onto living end but endless cycling gets old fast. Twin was my fave until it was banned. Running grixis shadow(was delver) as the closest to twin. Not a favorite though.
I haven't really found a playstyle in modern for me yet I guess. In legacy I wanted to either win fast or lock you out permanently. Modern is a diffrent game, I feel like it forces me to think more since the power level is less and I have to have better strategies since I can't rely on getting the "game winning" card like in legacy.
Thanks for all the replies. Been scratching my head for awhile over this.
Im not a serious player but I think I want to be, I opened an LGS a few years ago and ever since I've been leaning towards getting my skills up. I think I want to go beyond casual now.
I find myself switching decks often, but that is because the most interesting part of the game is exploring and learning something new. If I play enough with a deck it gets a bit stale and I find more enjoyment out of playing something entirely fresh. Sure, I'm always learning the nuance of a deck even after 100 games, but it's just not the same as your first 10 games with a deck. This may get in the way of mastery for competitive viability, but it's just more enjoyable for me
The trick for me was to realize when I was getting bored with a deck and being willing to let it go. Sure, I could probably put more reps in on my UW control deck, heck, it's even T1 on some lists right now! But I've played it too much and I'm ready to move on, so I'm using its popularity to trade off the cards for other staples or decks I'm building.
My key insight was accepting that I have this pattern and leaning into it. I have ~4 decks build right now, but I've played so many other modern decks over the last two years. I don't know if you're the same way, but you might want to consider accepting your fate and figuring out how to make it work well for your events and budget.
At beginning when I start playing Modern, roughly speaking 6 years ago, I only have 5 decks.
I spent lots of time playing those decks and learn lots of thing and skills.
Right now, I have about 18 decks to play and I find a similar issue like you:
I have no time equally playing or tuning each of the decks as heavy as before. There are some decks where I do not touch for more than couple of months, which is sad.
My experience is, at this point, it is impossible to master ALL of those decks. The only thing you can do is focus on mastering few 'pet decks' where you really enjoy to play with. Treat the other decks as kitchen table decks or forget them.
Besides, stop making new decks too frequently. This is just too much for you to play for fun, unless your goal is become a pro-player.
I think I do want to start playing pro. I've added a few more decks to my arsenal since this post began. Maybe that's where I'm getting so frustrated, the lack of ability to pick a deck and stick with it.
I bailed on the GP in vancouver because I couldn't decide what deck to bring. Taking turns, tron and grixis delver is what I was leaning towards. But when the GP was a week away I realized I have no time in with any of them and I felt rusty, never been to a large event before so lost my nerve/self confidence even though I'm a really good player. I regret not going to the GP.
