Orcish Librarian
So this was a pet card of mine back in the days of standard. It's very descriptive. On the surface it looks like a very slow, weak, and fragile creature. But when left unchecked for just 1 turn it becomes busted. In a deck where everything is relatively the same power or effect it doesn't matter what you exile. You always get the desired card on your next draw.
Let's say in a burn list your next 8 cards could be 4 burn spells 2 lands and 2 dudes. Odds you get all burn spells exiled are very slim. Even going down to 3 burn spells for this scenario you still will likely only get 1 or 2 exiled. If burn is what you want then you'll most likely have it. If not then you'll get a guide or swift spear instead.
People are not likely to waste a good removal spell on him. Would you honestly path this guy if you were on the draw and they played him turn 2? Collective brutality is the exception. You can get value out of that. Maybe they'll push or bolt him in that same scenario but odds are he's pretty safe.
But then you can remove him from the everything is equal decks and put him in an inevitability deck. Let's say you run 3 or 4 Eternal Scourge and Misthallow Griffin. You may not exile one the first turn you activate the ability, but turn after turn of using librarian you will start to get them grouped together, further increasing the odds you peel one or more. Sometimes you'll activate him and get a lucky hit by getting 1 or 2 exiled right away.
While I know this interaction isn't modern worthy by any means I could say you can put in this shell some relics and serum powders to kick start the process. Basically increasing your hand size from as early as turn 0. Relic opens you up to some eldrazi. And powder pays for them like a champ.
Just some ideas. Feedback please.
You could run it in skred red. It's too slow for burn but would provide good card filtering for a control deck. You could also run some miracle cards with his ability, like Thunderous Wrath. Skred red runs:
It's a super effective in casual town but will never breach the competitive barrier. Think of it like every two-man mana dork. You can't waste turn two on a creature that does nothing.
Until reading this thread, I did not know the card existed. Looks like a fun to use card in kitchen table Modern... does have a nice synergy with Eternal Scourge and some other cards. However, it seems a bit slow and fragile for the more competitive events - I could be wrong of course.
I usually find 2 mana creatures that need to untap to do something too fragile in Modern. I played a lot with Fauna Shaman and I rarely could use her optimally. Makes me wonder which two mana tap-creatures are played anyway. Actually, I already find Grim Lavamancer a hassle. There is the three mana Knight of the Reliquary of course, but that one also doubles as a finisher and doesn't necessarily need to tap to do its thing.
The difference is knight [can] win the game right then when it attacks. In that vein it's like Phyrexian Obliterator. When Librarian "untapps" it gives you a chance to find some other card that might be another piece of a group of cards to win the game.
All great points made.
I'm not suggesting more than 2 in any build. Lol. It's a card that raises consistency. But slow, weak and fragile.
The comparison with knight is night and day. Knight is the threat. Librarian gets you to the threats faster and better. Knight is met with removal. Huge push, path target. I wish someone would path this guy. Lol Or use a push or bolt really. One less on the actual threats to worry about.
Griffin is a little mana intense for what it offers, but free CA is okay any means. I'll pay 4 to get a 3/3 flier that doesn't cost me a card all day everyday. My only problem with Griffin is you may actually draw them without a librarian active. Yuck
Never even thought about running him in a miraculous deck. That feels strong, and would be a good place for Griffin. Take a few extra turns, cast a few Griffin and scourges, blast for 5 here and there. Sounds fun.
