I haven't tried it nor do I think I want to. We don't play enough cheap spells and it doesn't really do anything. If I wanted a 0/4 I'd probably go with Spellskite.

Never played Twin back when it was a thing and seeing as I didn't play between Onslaught Block and Journey Into Nyx, I'm still working on some things that came in between. So these lists won't feature Snapcaster, Scalding Tarn or Ancestral Vision. Also don't happen to have Shattering Spree and while I may grab it soon, it isn't in my possession yet. Also, no Spirebluff Canal yet, so I ran a full set of Temple of Epiphany. Actually really loved the scry factor. The one game I needed one more red and the temple came in tapped and I lost the game, I had already lost due to not having a 3rd fetchable red source b/c I had been sitting on a Flooded Strand for a couple of turns already. OK Disclaimer over.
I decided that I wanted to build Kiki "Twin" b/c the deck had always been so grindy when Twin was legal and it seems nuts that it isn't a thing now. The original list I based it on was a Ross Merriam list from December. Hope to have Snaps before Christmas, but here is the list I ran Friday night:
Slaughtered game 1, w/no giant surprises. I've played a lot of Goblins myself, so I sided in the Angers, Shocks, Electrickery and the Dispel. I think I sided the kikis, pestermites, a cryptic and V Clique. x/1s are awful blockers. Games 2 and 3, I cast both Electrickery each game. Least number of kills with it was 4 Goblins, I think 3 of the 4 castings were for 5, including a turn that had him start w/2 goblins, then go Loyalist, surged Bushwhacker x2. He didn't cry but he was in shock. Obviously never got the combo kill, but Pyromancer and Exarchs took him down.
Round 2: G/W Aggro 2-1 W
Something similar, got rolled pretty well game 1 as she curved out. Didn't bring in the Electrickery and only sided 2 Kiki, but I think the rest was like round 1. Oh, some number of Dismember came in b/c of Loxodon Smiter Game 2 I got to do things like Remand Company, then next turn Negate company. Pacting Company was great fun. Game 3 came down to she was forgetting to add counters w/a Gavony Township and I topdecked Kiki just before time in the round. She was a bit salty and said something about having the better deck and she should have won. I was non-commital and didn't point out the deck history. She was in high school, and outside of the Township error, she played very well.
Round 3: Temur 1-2 L
Austin is someone I have played against before and we had a great match. Lots of discussion about the deck b/c he had seen me play in a prior round and knew about the Kiki. He was a Twin player from way back, so he appreciated it. He was playing Temur but I don't recall ever seeing Goyfs, not entirely sure what the green was for. A good chunk of our deck was the same tho. Game 1 I T5 comboed him. The other 2 games were both close, but he eventually just had more action than I did.
Round 4: Grixis Delver 0-2 L
He was running Pyromancer too and my army of Exarchs helped defend awhile but eventually he ended up w/Pyromancer superiority and tho I had him at 4, 4 is not 0. Game 2 was a T2 Tasigur on his side and stranded on land post-mulligan for me.
Round 5: Another Temur 1-2 L
This Temur was certainly running Goyf, but T3-7 were pretty hilarious. T3 Savage Knuckleblade (!?!), I remand. T4 Knucks, I Remand. T5 Knucks, he goes to combat and I flash Exarch, tapping. T6 2nd Knucks, I cast a Pestermite and tap the one he hasted and take 4. T7 I trade the Pestermite, an Izzet Charm and 2 Dismember for the 2 Knucks. I believe I won game 1 w/the combo. Game 2 and 3 are kinda blurry, but he did bring in the flash Surrak for the otehr games and that was fun to see.
Everyone enjoyed the deck (even the salty girl agreed it was very interactive and back and forth) and I had a lot of fun playing it. Here is how I'm thinking of tweaking it for next week:
Given my current lack of access to a few big ticket cards, thoughts? I saw some fun ideas the last couple of page and interestingly I had already decided to add Keranos and Jace before seeing them. Maindeck Anger is a fun idea and in line w/my Skred deck too The Izzet Boilerworks seems fun w/the possibility of bouncing Temples for extra scry
I searched the thread and couldn't find a mention of it, but many have tried 4 x Simian Spirit Guide in the deck?
Allows for some turn 4 wins like the good old days. I also think card advantage just isn't that important in the format right now. Even exiling an SSG for a bolt while tapped out, or a Cryptic Command a turn earlier can make all the difference. Or play main deck Blood Moon and land a turn 2 BM etc.
Then you can side them all out as you turn into a more controlling deck.
I tried them at first. And just found I wanted real cards more often
This is the build I am currently running after finally getting my Snapcasters. Spirebluff is a no brainer to me. Deep Fiend has been hilarious fun and I would also consider trying out Gearhulk in his slot. Feels really smooth. I have a Jeskai list I plan to try out too, but the consistency in the 2 color build is phenomenal.
Replacing Sulfur Falls and being able to T1 Serum Visions or hold up Bolt is great. It's really 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other. Feels like being able to be defensive T1 as fast as the format is is better than being on time w Kiki. Twin was always pretty solid for holding off the game ending until they could protect the win con anyway
This is a base UR deck. I felt that I needed to splash white for better removal and sideboard hate. UR in my opinion does not have what it takes in the current metagame. I have tried cards like pestermite and I feel that they are not good in the deck. I feel that 4 exarch 2 resto is the way to go. They have better stats and I found pestermite to be lackluster at best. In terms of the sideboard having white helps a lot. RIP, stony, wear tear etc, all help out quite a bit. In terms of the manabase, I feel that 4 Spirebluff Canal is a must have in the deck. It makes the mana base much less painful and that is very relevant. I have tried Ancestral Vision in the deck and I have not been able to make it work. It often felt slow and interefered with the curve of the deck. It felt really hit or miss. If there is a way to make it into the deck I'm all for it, but I could not figure out how to make it work.
Hi all!. I have read all your entries due to the fact that I´m playing tarmo"twin" again. Game plan is perfect in this build to run kiki-jiki, the mirror breaker, so I gave it a shot. Feelings are equal than when I used to play TarmoTwin: tempo is awesome, but I loose vs Burn again. My first version played ancestral vision because I thought that this card would be a perfect update to this deck, but if I did´t have it in my first 2 turns, it was impossible to expend the mana to suspend it because this you have some work to do with the boys in front of your table way. So I erase that card and I put the forth serum visions and a peek (I played 2 ancestrals).
As you can see, it is a very common mainboard list, but with a self-made sideboard. It is adapted to the current meta, but versus burn my record is 1-3 in 4 rounds played (I won to a burn because he flooded every game). I´m asking myself if you are still playing this deck and how do you manage with burn.
Hi, is anyone still build the UR version of this deck? Splashing 3 colour seems quite difficult to play kiki for his 2RRR but still saw a number playing UWR kiki in mtgtop8. Any thought?
Hi, is anyone still build the UR version of this deck? Splashing 3 colour seems quite difficult to play kiki for his 2RRR but still saw a number playing UWR kiki in mtgtop8. Any thought?
UR imo does have enough tools to deal with the format. Having white gives you cards like path to exile, along with great sb cards. I think jeskai is worth playing over UR.
After Splinter Twin got banned, I wanted to keep the dream alive by trying to the combo but a little bit slower. Instead of turn 4 win consistently, more like a turn 5 win at the earliest. It was fun when I played this deck but it didn't last too long. The meta has changed a bit now so I would assume this deck might do a bit better. How has the results from anyone playing this deck has been?
I haven't played this deck in forever, but my friend took my UR list for a spin at his very first Modern FNM last week and went 3-1, playing with low card availability (no Misties, only 2 Kikis, etc.). Of course, I did still have the 3x Blood Moon, and it was great for him (mainboard!). He knows a little about Modern, but had absolutely no experience playing against anything but the very few non-meta decks I have (ie Esper Draw-Go, Bant Company/Midrange, and a super budget RDW List).
The deck is much weaker, but still very powerful. It's a two-cards combo and is now under the radar. Not enough for top-level tournaments, but it's powerful and fun.
Since the ban of the Gitaxian Probe that I said to myself that's enough. POD, TWIN and then Probe... In that time I was playing Death's Shadow (JUND and GRIXIS), Storm, Blue MOON and Burn. I decided to go back playing what I really like, TWIN (or some kind of that). And looking for it now I'm really really happy. Death's Shadow it's the best deck - YES, but it play like a JUND game that I don't want to play. Storm is growing and looks better than ever, but I hate to lose to graveyard hate.
You can have several distinct types with a UR base. The most notable in my opinion and experience are Jeskai (with Restoration Angel and Nahiri, that many people play like a control version with a combo), Grixis (very resiliente version that can grind the oponent) and UR (usual with Blood moon maindeck) .
I personally don't like much playing the Jeskai and like a lot playing Grixis. Now I'm playing with a more combo version with a splash of green, which was my initial idea when I went back to the deck.

I still follow this thread. I haven't played it before but I always liked the idea of keeping "Twin" alive.
Do you think 4 remand is necessary?
I'd mainboard speading seas and anger of the gods.
But, how do you deal with Shadow decks?
I think Remand's time in Modern is gone. The card is just... bad. Sure, you can Remand into Blood Moon (sometimes), but Mana Leak, Logic Knot, and Negate are better, since they can actually counter stuff. It's hard to leverage a bolt-able combo into a deck with bolt-able tempo pieces, and for that reason I feel like Kiki needs to move in the direction of a true Combo-Control deck. Hence why true couterspells are better here.
---
I think it might be time to seriously consider a black or white splash since Death's Shadow is a deck. UR's Blood Moon plan isn't really getting there every time haha. I personally want to splash black, but I expect that the W splash is better, since we then get better combo pieces. These are the lists I would play on either splash (keep in mind that I haven't really tested these):
No Tasigur in here because I don't want to build around it, ie with Thought Scour, and because Kiki can't copy it (he a legend). Possible the Inquisitions should be mainboard, or maybe they shouldn't be here at all.
Mostly the Ghost Quarters + Lighthouse in a 23 mana sources, three color decklists. The old UR Twin was playing 2 colorless lands (usually 2 Lighthouse or 1 + 1 T.Edge) and the Grixis version only one colorless land.
Other than that, even if I dislike Remand as a spell in Modern, compared to the old UR Twin you've both: a) increasing the cc of spells (Twin->Kiki) b) shortened the number of cantrips (Remands). Expecially the Jeskai list, which I like, really needs another mana source in the 60 (having also multiple Restoration Angels in it).
Agreed. In fact, I've toyed around with UR Kiki more recently with Logic Knots over Remands, and it always felt like it needed one more land.
Have to say, an interesting list, and a couple of notes, 5 sources of mana disruption main, nice curve for a more controlling build, and plenty of draw. Not very many pieces of the combo though (5 copy targets and two Kiki's).
May not be able to afford a deck like UR Kiki, yet but tempted to make it a goal.
Another thing I am curious about though, in a white splash list, even though I doubt it would replace another 4 drop in Cryptic, would a card like Ojitai's Command fit in? Card draw, life gain, limited counter potential, or reviving a Snapcaster all seem viable, but worth it?

Yes. Kiki Jiki costs 5 mana, 3 of which is red, and it dies to lightning bolt. He is quite a drawback compare to splinter twin.

Thanks to Heroes of the Plane Studios for the sigpic.
