This list is a lot of fun, though I did find myself stuck in different situations with less to do.
The biggest changes would be the arbor elf and sprawl combo for just a playset of birds of paradise, and then a combination of thoughtsieze and IOK to hit threats before they are threats. And then tasigur for grindier matchups. And then collective brutality Mainbaord due to versatility and graveyard engine.
Biggest upsets go to rest in peace and main board relic of progenitus and blood moons
Hi all, I've just started brewing up a Junk Rites list and stumbled across this thread. My take is related but a bit different to what you've gotten so far (as far as my quick skim can tell). I'm a little more all in or Rites giving me some big threat. I'm on my phone atm but I'd be interested in your thoughts on my poorly formatted list!
At the moment I'm thinking this list Is what I want to try next:
Creatures: 18
Angel of serenity x 2
Siege rhino x 3
Thragtusk x 1
Scavenging ooze x 1
Shriekmaw x 1
Eternal witness x 1
Grim flayer x 4

Tasigur x 1

Unburial rites x 3

Path to exile x 4
Lingering souls x 4
Grisly salvage x 2
Collective brutality x 1
Other spells: 3
Liliana of the veil x 2
Liliana the last hope x 1
Lands x 22
This to me is less all in on the unburial rites combo and plays the midrange more effectively. Though, casting angel of serenity will only really happen with unburial rights as casting above 4 is something abzan really tries to get at.
This to me I think would feel pretty good.
turns out, this past list was trying too hard... i'm gonna try and go back to the original and work my way down. perhaps the unburial rites combo is most desired with less watered down options of having versatility.
Greetings all. I have been on a similar Abzan Rites list for about 3 years now. I just now found this subject in the forums and thought I'd share my list. The biggest difference is I have Lotleth Troll and Stinkweed Imp as additional threats/graveyard fodder. My fetches are not optimal because I do not own any Verdant Catacombs. If any one can help me with the more normal formatting for decks, please send me a message.

Is it possible to get some feedback on my deck? It's a variant with a focus on bouncing enter-the-battlefield creatures in addition to ramp and gravedigging. Although not the best it's one of my more enjoyable decks.
It's fun making decks, but they all get slaughtered mercilessly in these forums. Seems like there is only one way to go when playing this game, and if you don't go that way then you are a loser. Exploring new ideas is frowned upon if it isn't flawless from the get-go...
"Are you using this card which is the best? No? Why are you even showing us these decks then?"
"Mom won't hang up your pictures on the fridge because they're ugly."
Hey guys, great to see the posts to this page. I've been off the grid due to school but I figured I'd post an updated list. I regularly switch out a couple of cards based on meta expectations but find this deck is still a monster again the aggressive decks in the meta. Death's Shadow decks are great match ups; just watch out for Temur Battle Rage if they're playing red and be careful not to get tempo'd out if they're playing blue. Eldrazi is fodder as always; I've found both Bant and Eldra-tron to be great matchups. Burn is a bit harder, as always, but we have the tools to win easily, just less room for error. Affinity folds to Souls and Serenity but I got rekted by a double Champion draw so there's that; otherwise a good matchup. Most matchups should go 2-1 in our favor provided we have the correct 60 post board and are familiar with play patterns. Here you go:
Hey Khai, by any chance would you have more game play videos that you'd be willing to share?
I haven't had the best luck playing the deck, but perhaps a more focus on the combo build would benefit? or it could be just me, I could very well be sequencing wrong and or not making the right moves.
Not sure about making videos; concerned the quality won't turn out too well, but I'm considering it. What list are you playing? There's no combo in my list, unless you're just talking about the reanimation aspect.

what i meant by combo, was going in more on the self mill/ reanimation gameplan. I compare it to the stock junk rites back in rtr, with playsets of the reanimation targets and unburial rites engine.
How's Grapple compared to Satyr? I've found the body to be quite relevant despite that it's just a 1/1, as well as the extra flip helping with delirium.
Grapple worked well considering we were always hitting either the land or creature, and it was usually more relevant in the end game being able to hit a threat to finish the game.
I do miss the satyr though. both have merits, and satyr becomes better against graveyard hate where as grapple loses to rest in peace or other mass graveyard removal. I have also blown out opponent's scooze triggers with grapple...

The only real changes considering are Obzedat for more removal, though Obzedat is a decent finisher and dodges sorcery removal. Angel of Sanctions is great because it's removal and a threat, but a bit too easy to remove right? Vault of the Archangel for Westvale, mostly considering we aren't playing that many lingering souls. And one more salvage would help hit more targets for the Unburial Rites strategy. This I felt was best achieved through self mill grisly salvage and discard options with brutality and lili of the veil.

I know this looks more like an Abzan Midrange deck, and honestly that's what it was before I put a reanimator package in it.
Card Choices:
No Arbor Elf + Utopia Sprawl: I tried this, but it was too inconsistent for me. That and killing the dork was a thing. Sigh. I shifted to a lower curve and 3 Hierarchs instead
No Angel of Serenity, or Reanimation targets with CMC Higher that 5: I tried those too, but through testing saw that the reanimation targets either get eaten in the graveyard or stuck in my hand. In any case, the Unburial Rites synergy wasn't coming out as consistently as I liked, especially Game 2 onwards. I stuck with lower CMC high impact creatures, Like Rhino, Thrag and Hulk instead
No Grisly Salvage: Felt good game 1, but otherwise the usage gets narrower the more hate present in Game 2 onwards. I liked Grim Flayer more, and built around it, with the baubles and to an extent the Hulk (Creature and Artifact)
Tarmogoyf?: It does the job of a cost-efficient beater, and benefits from all the delirium I built into the deck. If there were a another option that's either a good 2CMC reanimation target or something I would go for it. Coincidentally was a value reanimate target with Sun Titan in some test games
Why does it look like an Abzan Decklist?: I learned that I win more past game 1 with the proactive removal and discard strategy, grinding the match out and winning with a good reanimate when everyone's at topdeck mode.
Other things I tested:
1 Sun Titan: It replaces 1 Cataclysmic Gearhulk, and felt good in the late game. Recurs Tarmogoyf, Grim Flayer, Liliana. Still Testing
1 Tasigur: Same as above, tho it can recur more, tho the lack of choice makes me iffy about it.
Sideboard Tech:
Basically put the discard for control or Combo matchups, removal for aggro decks
Grave hate includes Scooze and 2 Nihil Spellbombs, the former because it's just really good and the latter because it's one-sided and feeds delirium.
All in all, it looks less and less like what an Abzan Rites is expected to be (really missing those angels) but otherwise more resilient past the Grave Hate, since it can operate without the graveyard if needed.
So far I've only tested this deck against Bant Eldrazi, Affinity, Abzan Company, Burn, Merfolk, Ad Nauseam, and RG Tron at my local store.
Combo is still a bad matchup, but all other deck archetypes are pretty even postboard.
@rjmcdonough92 Smuggler's Copter has been great. Aside from what you've already mentioned, it helps with Delirium and helps Satyrs and Arbor Elves be slightly more relevant as bodies when we don't have Township. In many cases, I found could care less whether my opponent kills Smuggler's Copter or lets the beats in, since both help the GY/delirium plan. I've been on and off Rallier, switching between Rallier and EWit. Both have great utility. Rallier when I tend to have more <2CMC permanents side, like Ethersworn Canonist, Gaddock Teeg, Pithing Needle, and Stony Silence, to go with grabbing Satyr, lands, Sprawls, Elves, Copter, and Revoker in the main. EWit when I just want to grab back some Paths or discard. Occasionally both get in the same 75.
@soysaucedude I disagree with the direction you took, mainly because as a blend between traditional rock and reanimator, your deck *looks* like it would be less efficient and consistent in both strategies. Of course, I haven't done any testing with your style so I can't be certain that the trade-off isn't worth it, but my intuition says no. I'll give some suggestions regardless: Three Unburial Rites are going to prove exceedingly clunky when you have very little discard or self-mill and your reanimation targets are a bit lacking. My suggestion is to go down on 5 drops - likely just 1 Thragtusk - play some smaller beaters like KotR, Tireless Tracker, Scooze, or Loxodon Smiter in the main, and play Profane Command instead of Rites. For the price of Rites, it can get back most of your creatures (after adjusting the main) as well as serve as removal or dual win cons.
On the note of Profane Command: I've been playing a variant of Abzan Death's Shadow with Profane Command instead of the red Kolaghan's Command and the card has been stellar; I've adopted a single copy in my Abzan Reanimator list to complement the two Unburial Rites.
While durdling on Cockatrice recently, I played against another Abzan list that had Tarmogoyf, Grisly Salvage, Siege Rhino, Unburial Rites, Wurmcoil, and Iona. Just wondered if that happened to be anyone on this page
whats the mirror match like!? that's pretty great and the tope end reminds me of the value unburial rites list that also runs red for faithless lootings. if i'm not mistaken it's Eric Pins list on MTG Top 8 (unburial rites value). Wurmcoil, Elesh Norn, Iona, and others of the like instead of serenity. my problem is Angel of Serenity is a top favorite card and it's just great to mill and reanimate.
^^
Yeah, that deck looked pretty streamlined and consistent, though a bit slow against fast aggro/combo decks.
I wonder if the deck can work better with the new Journey to Eternity over Unburial Rites as a repeatable reanimation engine. Sakura-Tribe Elder would slot into the deck as it is a fast ramp option that flips the enchantment immediately.
Mana dorks are probably the better main board plan, and you can bring in thoughtseize/duress postboard against combo. I really think you need to fit in a playset of Stitcher's Supplier also.
