plan for cheerios is as follows. Do not deter and you will not lose to this deck ever. This is also a fact and can not debated.
Game 1:
1. Counter target spell ( sram or puresteel)
2. If we fail at this mission(step 1), hope to land a chalice.
3. If we happen to go ornithopter(0for2) with the first 2 wishes, try to repeal said creature whenever you can keep them on 3 or less mana. This is the "best case ontario". Because they can't win unless they have multiple opals .
4. If we are still looking around the room trying to find a way to win, hopefully you can form tron by turn 4 and slaver them!!. Or topdeck like the former worlds strongest man bill kazmier and go over the top rope like rey mysterio. (just don't kill anyone).
5. If all else fails, tell your opponent you love the deck concept and it looks real cool. You are very impressed. Then proceed to grab your bottle of gatorade i mean h8rade and wins games 2 and 3 convincingly. This convincingly is non negotiable. We must absolutely destroy him or her the next 2 because the entire concept of the deck is for a simpleton. We are bred to outsmart the simpleton decks.
HOW DO YOU BEAT CHEERIOS? games 2 and 3.
1. Counter target spell (sram or puresteel)
2. Dismember or spatial said spells
3. Cast chalice of the void on any number.
4. Use Engineered Explosives to ensure victory. (2 or 0 is what i call for)
5. Surgical Extraction then demoralizes them.
6. Just my personal thoughts, how do we lose to this deck with snapcasters, dismembers, o. stone, rift, EE, Cotv, Remands, Condescends, Repeals, surgical extractions and or spell snares, spell pierce?
7. Ensure your opponent that its not his or her fault they lost the match. Let them know you really love the deck and concepts and they were awesome pilots / people.
8. If opponent tries to stress that they are unlucky, or its a good matchup for them, just nod your head in semi agree-ance. "better lucky than good" is your out if things shaky.
If you were looking for specific sideboard options or lines of play than this post probably didn't hit the mark. But I always have the old broom handy when cheerios is across from me. If they ask what I keep looking at I simply respond with "that broom over there, someone is about to get swept out!).
problem with gearhulk is that too many of our instances have X in there cost, gearhulk can't do anything with them. the ones we do cast aren't even spot removal, which is what you need with a card that does a flashback type ability. because of our spells having X snapcaster is still better for mana. Comparatively at 6 mana total for either or you are still gunna get sizeable effect from a snapcastered X spell.
My thoughts on mana rocks are cut and dry. Run them if you want to sustain long term competitiveness. Just board them out if you don't like them. There are a few lists that I do not run talismans but that was against my will. Sometimes i sling your guys' lists. I'm always changing 5-10 cards between the maindeck and board. It's been awhile since we tried something radical. It might be time. I haven't played nearly as much as i'd like to lately.
Maybe im wrong but Merfolk and u tron arent a lot popular in the current meta.and when im thinking of deck relying on counterspells they are the two main deck that im thinking of. im really not sure if this card will be played a lot in modern for this reason.
Im also playing a coco elves deck and im only playing with a single cavern of soul for this reason...no need for a full playset at the moment....
And if this would happen, just let it resolve and use dismember or spatial contortion on it. We also have tks to get rid of it. You can also buy some time with cyclonic rift, repeal or aetherize. Silent arbiter would also help a lot if your facing an heavy creatures deck anyway....
I know we have several ways to deal with it but the new green 4/3 can't be countered, creatures can't be countered cat thing from Amonkhet is just depressing.
Either we're in for a treat this set or we're going to get even more slammed down into the ground.
That thing isnt scary at all. There were many uncountable cards with similar effects before it and this just gets lumped with the rest of them. This stupid thing dies to bolt/spatial. Nobody is going to run it. Compare that cat to Cavern of Souls, and you might realize that caverns is waaaaay scarier and you're worrying over nothing.
So people are down on sundering titan now? It has made so many people cry it is hard to let it go.
I have gearhulks (from standard) but double blue and not actually a lot to flash back has me not sure. I like that its an 6+ artifact.
Snapcaster + Thirst for Knowledge is 3uu. Gearhulk + Thirst is 4uu but you get a 5/6 instead of 2/1. Snapcaster is a great card in this deck and so is Gearhulk. You cannot Treasure Mage for a Snapcaster, you cannot get back Snapcaster with Ruins, Snapcaster doesn't block most creatures... Gearhulk does. In my list I have 11 decent targets for Gearhulk (1 Anticipate, 4 Thirst 2 Remand 1 Mana Leak 2 Spatial 1 Cyclonic Rift) and 6 targets that are sometimes useful (4 Condescend 2 Repeal). Gearhulk into Repeal has won me games. 50% of the time you hit TFK/Anticipate, 25% Spatial/Dismember/Rift, 25% Remand/Leak. Gearhulk is bae.
So you think the one turn less that Miscalculation is effective is not that big of a downside vs being able to cycle it?
It's not really "one turn less effective". That's not how it works. Your opponent does not hit every land. They won't play the same spell every turn. Quite often your opponent will play 3 drop on turn 3, 4 drop on turn 4 etc... so if they tap out it makes no difference at all. Being able to cycle it is less relevant in U Tron than other control decks because we can already cycle everything that's dead or mediocre with Thirst.
As I said Gearhulk into Condescend and Repeal has won me games. It doesn't happen very often because 95% of the time you have better targets but sometimes the best you can do is play a 5/6 flash and get scry2 or repeal a token/chalice/walking ballista/etc.
Postboard you often have Dismember, Recall or Dismissal as really good targets to hit as well.
Has anyone tried Walking Ballista as a one-of? We can't use it as well as Eldrazi Tron does, but we can use it as recurring removal with Academy Ruins.
I'm guessing that in that slot Ugin is probably just better, but I'm throwing the idea out there.

Well, I can saw a woman in two, but you won't wanna look in the box when I'm through.
Hey guys! A couple of years ago (back before I played Pod), I played U tron for about a year. I am seriously considering buying back into it because I want a deck that is competitive but still has the fun of magic, while being skill intensive. However, I don't know how to edit the list I made with a friend a few months ago that I have been testing with. What would you cut/add and why? http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/08-08-16-nHx-u-tron/

List looks good. I do not like tolaria west and subbed with Gemstone caverns
-1 Wurm +1 Mindslaver
-2 Treasure Mage +2 Snapcaster mage
TKS is not great anymore with more removal now in more decks. I switched to Solemns, also you could drop that to 1 and add a 4th remand or anticipates makes the deck flow much better early.
Also with a very similar list to your with my suggested edits I went 4 and 1 through 5 rounds of swiss Friday at FNM. played 2 eldrazi Tron, 1 Dredge, grixis death Shadow and Affinty (loss) but close game 3. split top 8 with a second place finish. Burn player only 5-0 on the night. The list seemed very overpowered in these match ups because they were mostly midrange.
FOr GP Vegas Im thinking of No mainboard Chalice as I expect alot of eldrazi tron bant eldrazy and Jund Shadow. Its not great in any of these 3. If you look at tier 1 meta right now RG Titan shift and breech titan are in there as well which chalice does very little work in.
It has fallen off with the complete demise of Infect and zoo. Still works yes...just do not personally find myself ever really wishing i had one in hand over past month.
Regardless, I felt that if I was a more experienced player that Ad Nauseam would have had no chance. Maybe I'm wrong but their sequence of play is so linear that as long as you have open mana and some counterspells there is very little they can do, and as long as your board position is steadily improving it just gets worse (for them).
I find the match up 60/40 us in my experience. You do need to have 3 counters in hand fairly early to have those odds. A chalice on Zero and a counter is usually good enough. But if you do not draw chalice or hit enough counters the whole linear thing you mentioned is more efficient than your top deck. Also maybe the version you were against was budget? Because Angel wont win the game if ad nauseum resolves due to slaughter pacts and pact of negations

Chalice on 1 hits:
Death's Shadow
Fatal Push
Inquisition of Kozilek
Tarfire
Thoughtseize
Traverse the Ulvenwald
Birds of Paradise
Noble Hierarch

Well because of the meta. I understand the cards it hits in each deck. Against jund it just gets decayed. Against eldrazi it blocks path which is great but not to keep in main anymore. Will still have 3 in side board. I have played 4 weeks straight in a large fnm 40 player average and have hardly used them as stated above. If you are playing in your meta or online they may be better. The decks I see at my fnm seem to be a fairly decent mix and I think is representative of what I would expect at the gp as well
Match 1 vs U/W Gifts (2-0)
Won both games without drawing a single blue source. wurmcoil engine and chalice of the void on one both games pretty much locked it up.
Match 3 vs 8 Rack (2-0)
Game 1. Chalice on 1 bought enough time to Treasure mage into mindslaver lock
Game 2. Opponent destroyed hand but was able to stay at 3 cards most of the time for minimal damage. Finally top decked wurmcoil and ended up winning with lifelink token.
Match 4 vs Burn (2-1)
Game 1. Got burnt out quick
Game 2. Spatial contortion early one drops bought just enough time for sundering titan. Next turn top deck spreading seas opponent scooped with only 1 island in play.
Game 3. Opponent deflecting palm attack from wurmcoil when I was at 2 life, negate in response. Opponent no cards in hand and I was back to 8 life. Opponent made 1 more draw before scooping.
I dunno, as someone said elsewhere if you don't have a land drop that turn he basically reads U: Draw a card if you bounce a tower and replay it. He also has some situational crumble to dust protection built in, on a 5/5 indestructible body. However I also don't have my hopes up for him either.
