I saw that BW list a few days ago and want to try it, the match against Control and BGx should be muuuch better than my list, since you have lingering souls + spectral + 3 gideon. I don't know if cut Martyr + Ascendant is the right call, since they gave me a lot of free wins, but they are side out against BGx and some more control decks. So, if you're facing a lot of controls, this build should be much better. Maybe finding a spot for Archangel should be nice.
This deck is a metacall, imo.
Rvng: yeah, I'm going to more or less be testing your build with a sideboard tweaked for my local meta. Might get a Mistveil Plains in the Horizon Canopy slot so I can recur my birds.
I play BW list with Martyr + Ascendant and I'm fine so far.
About the Flagstones and Horizon Canopy. You DON'T need it, but it does help, especially Flagstones.
Here are my recent results by testing Rvng's build WITHOUT Flagstones:
Allies 2-0
Jund 2-0
Bogles 2-1
UW Control 1-2 (I quit, he had Shackles and the game lasted an hour +)
BW Eldrazi 2-1
Skred Red 2-0
Jund 2-0
Jeskai Nahiri 0-2
Burn 1-0 (he quits)
Mardu Control 2-1
Jund 1-0 (he quits)
As you guys can see, the only matchup with some trouble you'll have without the Flagstones/Canopy is against control. After fetching sisters with Rangers and fetching Hawks... your deck will eventually have more lands than threats. I have played a lot against control where I would draw lands for 5 straight turns because I used all my Hawks/Rangers, ended up with 14 lands: more than the control player!
As for the new Gideon, you definitely want it in the control matchup.
Thoughts on Auriok Champion: tested it and disliked a lot. The matches that he should be good(jund, grixis, burn, etc), it was very unimpressive. It was just a sister for 2 manas with nothing really relevant. I guess that it was better when Twin was on the format. Always I want to play anything else than it, so I decided to cut it.
Auriok Champion seems like a great Sister replacement against control/burn matchups, though. But for the price, I could never justify getting her. I can understand why she'd be unimpressive otherwise, though-- she really is just a 2-mana sister most of the time.
EDIT: My Gideon and Flagstones just arrived~
EDIT 2: Out of curiosity on a technique-based standpoint, what do you (or what SHOULD you) fetch with Ranger of Eos, and in which situations? I always find myself going "oh, get a Martyr and an Ascendant!" when I should probably be grabbing Sisters instead.
Hey guys, I decided to go to FNM one last time tonight, before school starts!
Before I left for FNM, I made some changes to my deck: I decided to listen to Rvng's advice by taking out my two copies of Auriok Champions that I have, replaced them with normal sisters. I also decided to go up to 22 lands by taking out Secure the Wastes.
Result: 3-0. For the first time !!!
Round #1: vs Budget UW Humans Result: 2-0
- Not much to say, he was playing a budget deck. I won 2-0. Didn't sideboard at all. Helped him improve his deck by suggesting cards like HOTP which he loves a lot!
Round #2: vs RG Tron Result: 2-1
G1: I have to say, I "gave up" already when I knew who I was playing against. He's a buddy that I've played a couple of times against already at the shop. His first opponent picked the deck he had to play against by picking a sleeve color. "Unfortunately", he picked Tron. The other choices were Jund and Jeskai Nahiri which I wished that he was playing with one of those decks. For game 1, I had a slow but also "aggressive" hand. T1, Serra. T2, Ajani. T3 Serra. T4, HOTP. T5, he can't assemble his combo lands, he scoops.
G2: I mulled to five cards. Kept a hand with no threats but with Suppression Field. I draw a Stony Silence. Unfortunately, it was just too slow. He plays Karn and Wurmcoil later. I scoop with a disappointed face. I think he knew that in my mind, I gave up already, but he told me, that there is still game 3 and that this match up is certainly NOT a BYE for him.
G3: I mulled to six cards. Saw the Martyr + Serra combo, with a Suppression Field. T1, Serra. T2, attack Serra + sac Martyr; Serra is now online. T3, Spectral Procession, but he plays Pyroclasm the following turn. T4, I draw SP again and play it. T5, he just can't find his last Tron land, I go Suppression Field and attack with the crew, he's at 1 life and concedes next turn. At this point, I was VERY happy and thought that tonight was my night!
Round #3: vs Merfolk Result: 2-0
G1: Now this matchup, I do feel like it's in our favor but we can easily lose against it if they have that crazy draw. Game 1, I had the Martyr + Serra combo. Everything went downhill for him after that. He told me that this was his friend's deck. I told him that Merfolk's sideboard is very good for Soul Sisters. He smiles and tells me he's not sure what to side in. Which, I immediately guessed that he didn't have Chalice of the Void.
- Sideboarding: +1 Wrath of God, +1 Ghostly Prison, +1 Dismember // -2 Martyr of Sands, -1 Soul Warden.
G2: He mulls to six. I keep my hand with a Wrath of God and a handful of Sisters. I then drew Ghostly Prison (wrecks Merfolk). I thought that I couldn't play it on my turn 3, since he had a Cursecatcher in play, I read his ability one more time only to realized that I completely forgot that it couldn't counter my GP. I play GP with a smile and he shakes his head. Everything went downhill for him at that point and I win!
I'm extremely happy because I finally went 1st place for the first time. After all the effort I put into this deck, that victory was sweet!
@Matsuri: About the fetching with Rangers, I usually fetch for some sisters if I don't already have some. Else, if my life total isn't too low and my hand is full of white cards, I go for the combo.
Champion is good when black and red are good. Black and red aren't polluting 25% of the meta so Champion is less good. If Jund becomes the best thing ever, then Champion is fantastic because they can't kill her without Lili.
hello everyone. long time lurker. been playing this deck for a few months. been enjoying it immensely. i will be going to a gpt in my area in a few hours. i will be trying rvng's deck tonight, which may be a bad idea cause my deck was played quite a bit and i got used to how it played. but we shall see how it goes lol. i ran 4 champions and i liked them just because the meta in my area plays a lot of burn, jund, ad nauseum, dredge, etc. so the life gain and protection that champion has helped at times. but it will be fun to see how rvgns list does tonight.
my list was.
4 soul wardens
3 souls attendant
4 auriok champion
2 martyr of sands
3 serra accendant
4 ajjanis pridemate
3 ranger of eos
3 archangel of thune
4 path of exile
3 honor of the pure
4 spectral procession
1 gideon ally of zendikar
12 plains
2 windbrisk heights
4 ghost quarter
4 Flagstones of Trokair
Notes:
- Jund/Junk are now playing Grim Flayer, which is a card that I really like a lot. From what I've heard from the buddies at my shop, they are replacing Dark Confidant for Grim Flayer. I really like the card, but not sure if it's better than Bob. I'm also on a winning streak against Jund though, love the salt!
- I will spend a little more time testing INFECT. I will still play Soul Sisters, don't worry. Soul Sisters is my go-to deck. I just want to try something else for once. I will still be very active on this primer.
I can't imagine people being on Grim Flayer for long. It seems to be doing the same thing that Hooting Mandrills did for them, which was not be good enough. Replacing Bob with it seems like a bad call, since they work so well together.
Fetching with Ranger: I fetch sister, sister about as often as Martyr/Serra. If I'm holding a Thune or a Pridemate, I definitely fetch the Sisters. I'll fetch Martyr and Serra only if I can instantly drop Martyr into 6/6 Serra the next turn. That's actually pretty rare, considering the circumstances.
Someone mentioned Mistveil Plains - I use two of them in Martyr/Proc to infinitely recur Squad Hawk. They also do a very good job against matchups that try to kill you through mill (Though I haven't seen Lantern in ages.) I hate drawing them naturally, but fetching for them is a lot of fun. I would only mess with them if you have Squad, though.
Yeah, I'd only really want one in the deck to be fetched with Flagstones of Trokair. Being able to keep recurring a chump blocker every turn would be great for the more grindy matchups.
Man, I'm really aching to play again. I haven't gone to FNM in two weeks now (in fact, I haven't had a chance to play MtG at all since Game Day), and I haven't played Soul Sisters in months since I've been distracted with Standard. But since Game Day is over (3rd place at my LGS yo :D), I'm all about Modern again. I wanna play Soul Sisters again, and maybe have a chance to try out the other Modern decks I've been piecing together.
And yeah, I suppose fetching Sisters makes sense if you have something that benefits from them. And maybe even if I have Spectral Procession, since I'd get 3 life a piece for each one on the board-- provided I don't already have more white cards in my hand for Martyr to feed off of, I suppose?
so i just got back from an IQ plus tournament. made it to top 8. my matchups were all a fight, which i dont mind as it was fun lol. most games i did have to mulligan to 6 and 5. had a blast at the tournament and as always, learned a lot.
first round was against grixis which i wrecked him in 2. the champions and pridemates did their thing.
second game was against slivers. easy game as he was chump blocking my pridemates.
third round was a loss against RG breach. he was able to ramp to emerakul twice and couldnt get my board out faster.
fourth game was against infect. i was in 3, super lucky with double ghost quaters and paths and dismembers.
fifth was another infect (lucky me right? lol) which went 3 games too. was a back and fourth for a bit but i was getting better top decks like spectrals.
top eight was a loss against jund. he was just able to stablize better with removal and get goyfs and oozes out and pumped. didnt see any of my sideboard in the 3 games. i feel confident against jund when i have champions.
So he went
+2 angels
+4 Auriok
- 4 Hawks
-1 Martyr
-1 sister
Hmm don't know if the Auriok is necessary for me. I only own 2 that's in the side. Have been considering bumping in another angel though. Not sure about 3 though. Wonder if he faced a lot of burn
A more Midrange focus on Sisters is interesting but ultimately I don't think I like it. We're too prone to bad draws that leave us either mana screwed-- or mana flooded and not pulling the right threats. We just don't have the card draw to support that, I think. And I don't think kicking the Hawks out of a build with Martyrs is the right decision-- at best, it's an instant extra 9 life loaded into your hand, and at worst, it's a 3-card deck thinner to go with our other deck thinners in Flagstones of Trokair and Ranger of Eos.
If anything, I think this build should be running 4 Windbrisk Heights to stuff the Archangel of Thunes, Gideon, Rangers, and Processions underneath.
EDIT: Modern Masters 2017 announced! Here's hoping for some reprints of Auriok Champion/Cavern of Souls/Horizon Canopy etc.
This deck is a metacall, imo.
