I need some help here please. 1) Do you like Kitchen Finks in the sideboard, and how do you use them? Are they for blocking against Burn or for going the regular damage route against Shadow? They look out of place to me, but I have only played the legacy variant so far. 2) I´m also surprised to see people play Shapers´ Sanctuary, I think it looks terrible. You´re only up a card as soon as they kill your second creature, and even then, random cards vs. your on-board threats seems like a bad deal. Isn´t it better to use something that protects my creatures, instead of getting cards when I fail to do so? Can anyone explain if and how this card works?
Thanks for any help.
1. We need a way to gain life in some caseses. Afaik pulse of murasa and finks are our options. I favour finks since it comes back and can block.
2. Shaper's sanctuary is the real deal. It draws either protection off the trigger to protect your creature or draws into another threat. Its 1 cmc which is where we want the cmc to be. It essentially replaces wild defiance in our sb, its fsster then defiance and fatal push makes wild defiance less attractive these days.
I played again last night and ended up going 2/2 with the same list. Very close to going 3/1 at least.
R1 was against esper control. Won 2/1 wasn't overly difficult.
R2 2/0 against jeskai control. He got somewhat flooded both games and i punished him.
R3 1/2 loss. This was a homebrew zombies deck with things like fatal push, inquisition of kozilek and things like that. I got my blighted agent stripped from my hand in game 1 and 3 and didn't draw another evasion infecter for both of those matches. Felt very close to win.
R4 was against junk. 1/2 loss. The games he won his goyf got massive very quickly above curve. A interesting play on game 3 came up and i had one of two lines to take.
After the game i found out 1 of the lines gets the kill.
Line 1 was might of old krosa x2 on blighted agent with a noble heirach for the exalted trigger. I had vines in hand to protect it ounce and my opponent had 4 mana untapped.
Line 2 was deploy spellskite from hand and use 1x might of old krosa to swing in for 6 poisen withthe kill next turn and having a skite for blocking. This was the line i ended up taking.
My opponent had raging ravine and a 6/7 goyf on the board.
I was worried about a blow out if he had two removal spells.
He ended up having a ancient grudge killed my skite in my end step then swung for lethal. One skite from the sb does it haha
Both lines have merit i think but ultimately i think i may habe take the wrong choice and should of pushed for the win.
Thoughts on this line i took ?
Also i got to play a lot more with jace vp and nissa last night. They are both the real deal and im very happy to have them in the 75.
I have a tournament this weekend so unfortunately i will be piloting eldrazi tron to get some reps in before the weekend tonight.
Looking forward to seeing how others testing is going.

Ah. I didn't account for the fact that Sanctuary draws us cards even when we save our creatures with BD/Vines/Pierce. That's what makes the difference.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
When I hit my 3000 post mark, I'm gone for good.
Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.
I am looking to return to infect and been encouraged by some of the new cards making their way into the 75. I was wondering if anyone has tested Sorcerous Spyglass? Any thoughts?
Lately I have been seeing that Jace, Vryn's Prodigy has been used in Infect decks lately. I'm sure how I feel about this. If anyone here has been using it, how is it been working in the deck with matchups?
@Xaricore, I'm wondering the same thing. What is the roll that JvP plays in the deck? Is it just to dig/setup our hand? Is it that plus flashback pumps when he flips?

Wouldn't be hard to flip Jace, Vryn's Prodigy in Infect. The only thing is that it makes Infect a little bit slower in a way, being more careful with winning with infect damage where Infect is usually a speedy win by going all win, guns blazing. I will definitely look into the more tempo and careful pace of Infect has turned into and see it if worth adapting Infect to that.
I have been jaming the list i posted off and on for the last couple of weeks.
I played it twice and ive gone 2/2 and 1/2 drop. The deck is fine sometimes you just see some bad match ups and ppl have the right answers.
Ill be jamming the deck tomorrow and ill only be making a slight change of dropping 1 spell pierce from the main to fit in a dismember meaning i will go down to 3x spell pierce mb.
Im also going to drop a shapers sanctuary from the sb to run a dismember there also. Meaning there will be 2x shapers sanctuary in the sb.
Other than that the same as the list i was running.
On a side note i played burn for the first time in 8 months last night going 3/1 being beaten by infect in the last round haha. I guess that will teach me.
Ill post a tournament report following tomorrows event.
I was a fan of Infect since when I started playing the game (RTR) and eventually built a deck around skithiryx with green as support for pump and glisterner elf. This was kitchen table magic at its finest, not taking into account any banlist.
I got into commander afterwards and my groupgot more and more competitive which got us into modern, where I fell in love with jeskai delver.
But I want a second deck for something different, that's why am here.
Is Infect after the probe ban still viable, or fun to play? Can you still have the insane draws for a turn 2-3 kill?
My meta is probably a bit hostile for this deck, but thats the same for my delver so I am used to it.
My playgroup consists of: regular jund, bushwhacker zoo, enduring ideal combo, burn, soul sisters token, BW token, mardu mentor, Bant Eldrazi. Sadly there are no valakut decks and hardly any tron decks, like eTron.
Basically I am looking for an under the radar deck that's capable of goldfishing but also isn't easy to pilot and has more gameplans/threats to work with.
Thanks in advance!
Honestly, if I were you, I would not play Infect.
The deck fell out of tier completely after the probe ban and the introduction of Fatal Push. The deck is currently "under the radar", which you mentioned is what you're looking for, but the reason it's it's there is because the deck is just not as good as it used to be.
Infect has so many natural counter cards that get played at a very high frequency (Bolt, path, push, counter spells), as well as other creatures that will block you (your best card is blighted agent, so you have to be lucky to draw him), or even worse, drawing a hand of 0 or 1 infect creatures, since the deck only really plays 3 (4 of each Glistener elf, Blighted Agent, and Inkmoth). The deck just gets beaten by so many different things, and Wizards hasn't printed the tools necessary to keep the deck alive, like another 1-drop, or good mid-range infect creature in the right color(s).
If you want a good deck, that is capable of a turn 3 win and has tons of gameplans and threats, I strongly suggest you check out Abzan Company. You can see the deck in my sig, or just head over to their forums in the Tier 2 section of Modern. It's a combo deck that can win fast out of nowhere, or it can beat your opponent down and play a mid-range game.

Good post. Let me know how well you do with Infect moving forward. lmao you're a joke
Infect is not a tier deck atm so if your looking strictly for a tier deck infect is prob not the deck for you.
If your not phased still then sleeve it up and start playing it. There really is nothing else that plays like it in modern.
As for the event i played on the weekend i ended up running in at 12th position after five rounds.
I was hoping to play against a bunch of storm/Affinity/scapeshift and even eldrazi tron. Unfortunately i saw storm ounce.
R1. I played against a brew deck with planeswalkers. I was too fast for it and snatched the win 2/0
R2. I had to play against a blood moon pack rat deck. I snuck away with the first match but games 2 and 3 land destruction to deal with inkmoth's and kill spells overwhelmed me. 1/2
R3. Jund. Was hoping to miss this match up but sometimes you hit your worst match up. He got me convincingly 0/2
R4. Storm. Finally i hit the match i was hoping to face. Needless to say i beat him 2/0 infect is too fast for it.
R5 (trying to get a win to have any chance of top 8, for and against had to be kind) A gain life deck with serra ascendant. Fortunately i don't care about your life. I managed to get the job done without too much trouble 2/0
The deck was powerful as always and my losses were to prob my worst matches in the room. Overall the deck performed well and given the chance i would play it again in that meta.
Jund and bw tokens can be harder match ups, especially jund.
It attacks on two fronts hand disruption and kill spells which is harder to combat.
A dryad arbor in the mb or sb can help where they tap out you can fetch in your end step and have a creature to attack for normal damage next turn. Also good if they get a lili of the veil out you can fetch up the arbor and sack it.
Other then that shapers sanctuary would be your friend as is nissa. You are not the beat down in this match and will have to play a longer game.
Tokens is a little easier you either want to play and protect a blighted agent or save up for lethal and having a distortion strike or apostles blessing to get through their blockers.
Hi, I'm thinking about switching from Merfolk to Infect. Never played anything else in modern. The deck would look like this:
4x Misty Rainforest, Wooded Foothills, Inkmoth Nexus;2x Breeding Pool, Pendelhaven;3x Forest and 1x Dryad Arbor
4x Glistener Elf, Blighted Agent, Noble Hierarch and 1x Jace, Vryns Prodigy
1x Nissa, Steward of Elements
4x Mutagenic Growth, Might of Old Krása, Groundswell;3x Blossoming Defense, Vines of Vastwood, Spell Pierce, Slip Through Space and 2x Become Immense.
Is this deck viable? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Distortion strike is favoured over slip through space though.
The nissa is sometimes getting used but is mostly a sb card rsther then mb.
Runing 22 lands is a bit over what ppl are running. Normally its 20 lands or 19 lands + a arbor.
Infect is not a tier deck atm so if your looking strictly for a tier deck infect is prob not the deck for you.

It does make me a bit sad that Infect is not a tier 1 deck anymore. When I finally finished the deck, only really got to play with the deck for about a month until Gitaxian Probe got banned.
Nonetheless, Infect is still super fun to play for those want a different way to win, it doesn't manage to throw some people off in tournaments, people seem to think that the deck is dead, thankfully it is still kicking. I do admit Fatal Push is the one removal spell that has hurt us the most...
Thanks for your response. Can I ask why is Slip Through Space worse? Sorry if it was explained before.
Getting a unblockable creature for two turns in a row is just strickly better then the draw and unblockable for 1 turn.
It means if you have to sequence a pump spell like might of old krosa leaving up mana to protect it you can.
Slip means you hope to draw a extra pump maybe and get the kill on the spot but because of the way the mana base is constructed most games will have you with 4 mana available meaning you cant take both lines.
Distortion strike means you can pump this turn leave mana up for protection then do exactly the same next turn.
I personally think twisted image is a bit dated. Sure it has some good targets and it feels nice to 2 for 1 your opponent, but the purpose of the card was really to hedge against spellskite which was hugely more popular in the past than it is now. Since spellskite is actually pretty rare these days, we don't need to side into removal for it every match since our opponents just aren't bringing it in for games 2 and 3 anymore.
I see a lot of people running Jace, Vryn's Prodigy. I understand that the "loot effect" (draw, discard) is great, but if he transform, doesn't it make the card worse? You lose the loot effect, and infect is not a deck with lots of kills spells (basically 1x or 2x dismember MD), so you basically can't protect the Jace transformed. Ok, you have his PW abilities, but i dont know if those are abilites infect does want.
For this purpose, Merfolk Looter, can't be consdered better? You just can keep looting, without the problem of transforming the card and losing it.
Been playing Infect a lot lately and have put up good numbers from two numbers I have played with it:

It has been good, Infect is a deck that throws people off because it is thought to dead because of ban, that is definitely not the case. My only concern and thought is that if you play it at your meta too much, people will get used to it and know how to adapt to it. Which it is why after the third time, this time not coming in top cut, I'm paying another to switch up the meta.
Played Jund,Jund,Abzan, Jeskai yesterday, after losing to mono-red chalice/moons... was a rough day
Out of curiosity, if you had complete free choice to pick your starting 60 against BGx, what would play?
I know these are hard MUs, but I’m trying to see what people think are the best paths to victory, and key/bad cards, I.e how much to like mutagenic growth, distortion strike, Jace, Spell Pierce, spellskite, etc...
Thanks!

Tournament Standings - 4th out of 27
It has been good, Infect is a deck that throws people off because it is thought to dead because of ban, that is definitely not the case. My only concern and thought is that if you play it at your meta too much, people will get used to it and know how to adapt to it. Which it is why after the third time, this time not coming in top cut, I'm paying another to switch up the meta.
Thanks!
