For one, I bet I take a lot less damage from my lands than you do.
My manabase differs by
-2 Windswept Heath
-2 Polluted Delta
-1 Watery Grave
-1 Vault of the Archangel
-1 Plains
+4 Mutavault
+2 Shambling Vent
+1 Godless Shrine
+1 Swamp
Gifted Aetherborn sucks. You will probably have to shock yourself to play it on turn 2. That is a complete disaster if it gets killed without gaining life, and even if it gains 2 you're back to where you started. I would rather have 4 Shambling Vent than any Aetherborn. You could even play Kitchen Finks instead. That's not to mention that Aetherborn is simply underpowered in general.
You should definitely try some number of Smuggler's Copter. Even without Mutavault and Tidehollow Sculler, 1-2 Smuggler's Copter is a fantastic addition to the deck.
to have a better shot at beating Burn. I don't think you need the Crusaders to still wreck Death's Shadow.
I changed my mana since my last post to -1 fetch -1 plains for a hallowed fountain and anither shambleming vent. I usually dont have to shock myself to get him out on two since he i have enough fetches to grab basics most times and still have all my colors. I agree that shambling vents is way better than I thought it was and o could see cutting a fetch for number4. I thought we were a midrange deck and wanted as few lands in our deck as possible so we don't draw blanks. I also thought we needed more revolt triggers for push but you really don't. Im honestly suprised you can get away with 4 mutavaults and not have mana issues.
Aetherborn has only been great for me so far he is super good vs zoo and aggro and apart from crusader all of our creatures already get killed by any removal spell in the format. He just forces burn to throw their kill spells at it. Apart from discard i am not sure if we can realistically play around blaze outside of brimaz. Brimaz is probably super good vs burn since he is immune to blaze and is probably a 2 for one. Getting back on topic aetherborn has only impressed me since i played it he trades with everything and the lifelink is way more relevant than it seems at first. Just being at a avg higer life total is a big deal. Plus he is very good on the defense against things like shadow and tasigur. If i cut crusader than i am very convinced that gideon is better in our 4 slot. The other reason That crusader is great is his ability to run through dredges creatures and just get in for 4. Its not great but it plus spuls is a viable way to steal that match.
Im warming up to copter as a way to conbat control and tron since they cant ugin it away and nuking it with karn probably feels real bad. So i may end up doing-1 crusader -1 push for +2 copter. I dont like a 4 of glorifed equipment. Is it worth looking into a sword if mirron crusader is going to stay getting doubl activations seems good and it makes all of our soles way scarrier. The blck white sword makes mirriin crusder a 4/4 who gains 6 life and gets two creatures back.
Another thing i was thinking about was cutting my 4 drop walkers and maybe a crusader and putting in copters and cutting to 20 lands with 4 vents. It makes bob a lot lot better and makes us faster into decks like tron and dredge. We lose a little bit of grinding but we have better fixing. If you are going this way i think cutting crusader for tidehollow makes a lot more sense. Gideon gets me a lot of games but if we are still good into grindy matchups having a lower curve might make us better into aggro and combo plus the copters make silver bullet cards in the sb way better. Also our only double maana are aetherborn and liliana. So playing one or two mutavults is a lot safer. soem people on here are having success with hidden stockpile maybe thats our replacement for 4 mana walkers it is pretty vs tron and its easy to side and good vs grindy matchups. It does take a long time to get going and its really only nuts when you get two so it may just be to dedp and to low impact.
One reason I can play 4 Mutavault is I have 4 Copter to go with them. Not only is Copter easy to cast but the looting helps find whatever cards you need, e.g. more colored sources. Even though Copter is like equipment in that it requires another creature to do anything, it is totally unlike equipment in that it is a threat in itself. Suppose I have Copter and play Dark Confidant and crew Copter. If it was equipment and I equipped Confidant, they can kill in response and I spent mana for nothing. With Copter, I spend no mana and if they kill Bob they are still getting attacked. If they kill Copter I still have Bob. Honestly Copter is the best turn 2 play available to us and given that it can loot away extra copies of itself, I think it's crazy not to play 4.
I think going to 20 land is a bad idea, especially if you are going to play 4 Shambling Vent. One of the strengths of my version is that there are 8 manlands. I am not flooding much even with 23 land, less so with Bob and Copter to see extra cards. If you play with the hypergeometric calculator you will see that 23 land maximizes the chance to draw 3 or 4 by turn 3 on the play. I think it is imperative to hit our first 3 land drops so 23 is as low as I will go.
The Swords suck. They are clunky and vulnerable to lots of maindeck cards out of Death's Shadow. If you want a combo with Mirran Crusader, play Elspeth, Knight-Errant which is fantastic on its own.
Again I think the weak link in your deck is Gifted Aetherborn. I'm not sure what your meta looks like but it's a bad card unless the room is all Burn and Zoo, and even then I'd prefer Kitchen Finks. Aetherborn is not good against Death's Shadow and even if it was I wouldn't worry about that when you already have Lingering Souls, Mirran Crusader main, Gideon, and 15 removal spells counting Liliana and Collective Brutality. Your deck should be great against Shadow even if you replaced Aetherborn with Lone Missionary.
Split the finals of the PPTQ today! 4-1-1 in the Swiss. I got $100 cash and box of Modern Masters 2017. Opponent took RPTQ invite and 12 packs. I played the following list:
R1 Burn 2-1
G1 I killed myself by playing a spell into Eidolon of the Great Revel at 2 life with lethal on the table. LOL. Time to tighten up. G2 and 3 I had Collective Brutality (thanks, sideboard!) and won easily.
R2 Living End 0-2
Both games I was a removal spell or two away from stabilizing but didn't get there. My sideboard has almost no relevant cards so it was rough.
R3 Grixis Death's Shadow 2-0
I wrecked this guy without drawing Mirran Crusader. Liliana, Lingering Souls, and Path were enough in both games.
R4 Mono Red Goblins 2-0
G1 he forgot about a Mutavault and made an attack that cost him his entire board. G2 I had removal into Kalitas into Elspeth for a casual 6/7 flying lifelink.
R5 Eldrazi Tron 2-0
This was the best match by far. G1 the board ended up as my Bob with me at 2 life and him at 2 life. I flipped a land and attacked for the win. G3 I was at 1 life against his Endbringer so I had to suicide a Shambling Vent into it. I also had double Lingering Souls and he died in the skies, without topdecking Reality Smasher or Walking Ballista. Earlier in the game I double blocked another Endbringer with Linvala and Mutavault and then cast Anguished Unmaking on his 5/5 Ballista before damage. Weeeeee

Quarters - Ad Nauseam 2-1
G1 he got me. G2 and G3 I was able to discard him into oblivion and surgical Ad Nauseam.
Semis - Affinity 2-1
G1 he had a great draw with double Plating, Etched Champion, and Ravager. G2 and 3 I just had a ton of removal and was able to keep him under control. Copter and Mutavault were MVPs in g2 to keep Etched Champion from being relevant.
Finals - Amulet Titan 2-0
We split the prizes but we played for fun. I absolutely destroyed him in both games. G1 he couldn't find a second green source for a while. When he finally did I had Path for his Primeval Titan and a lethal attack the following turn. G2 I had a bunch of discard and was able to Surgical his Titans.
The deck ran incredibly well. The 3 Collective Brutality in the board were stupidly good and I'm very happy with that change. Before the event I decided I really didn't want to lose to Burn or CoCo and I think 4 Brutality after board is the best way to accomplish that goal.
Congrats on another solid finish davemo! Still don't want to up the Surgical Extraction count in SB? Do see you went with a full playset of Collective Brutality in the 75. That's just mean against burn . So would I be right in guessing you sided those in for thoughtseizes against burn and for the inquisitions against coco?
So ive been wrong about copter cards actually very good especially when you have the game locked with liliana. It is like a redraw everyturn after you are hellbent. My only issue is it feels kind of silly if you draw multiple. I am probably going to stay at3 for a while.Feels really good to go t2 copter in t3 souls. It is alittle akward with bob cause they both want to go down t2, but oh well. It makes sculler a loI better. I am still not sold on 4 vwnt 4 vault it may be a meta thing for me though i have a lot of burn at my lgs. I also play test on cocaktrice a lot which is a buggy system where I constantly draw no land or one land openers or 4x of the same card in one game i was wondering if any one else was having the same experiences who play tests on there. I also have been playing with having snapcaster mb. He is definitely strong in the deck but having him makes us very weak to gy hate so i guess its a meta call but being able to have negates and rejections for tron feels good.
I do sort of want a second Surgical but it might just be because I lost against Living End then beat Ad Nauseam and Amulet Titan with Surgical. Otherwise I never sided it in. Survivorship bias?
Against Burn I sideboarded:
-3 Thoughtseize
-4 Dark Confidant
+3 Collective Brutality
+1 Fatal Push
+1 Gideon of the Trials
+1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
+1 Celestial Purge
I didn't play against CoCo but my plan is:
-4 Inquisition of Kozilek
-4 Liliana of the Veil
-1 Elspeth, Knight Errant
+3 Collective Brutality
+1 Liliana, the Last Hope
+1 Linvala, Keeper of Silence
+1 Fatal Push
+1 Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
+1 Shadow of Doubt
+1 Aven Mindcensor
I could even see also boarding in Pithing Needle or Surgical for Thoughtseize or Elspeth but I haven't tried it yet.
Davemo88, may I ask you two questions about the deck? I am playing B/W Eldrazi Processor at the moment and as this deck plays many of the cards I love the most in B/W, I am also interested in playing this one.
1) Why are you choosing Elspeth in the 4CMC Planeswalker Slot over Gideons (Ally and trials) or for example Kalitas? Why is it so good? Would you play it without the Mirran Crusaders in the list?
2) If my meta is very Tron(regular Tron) heavy. How would your Manabase look if you want to specifically include Mainboard Ghost Quarters, but still some Manlands?
Would be glad to read your answer:)
1) I already wrote about this a lot; check out my past posts. tldr Angelic Blessing is a lot better than it looks, e.g. with Shambling Vent. I would play it without Mirran Crusader. If it wasn't for the prevalence of Death's Shadow I'd cut Mirran Crusader for some combination of Kitchen Finks and Tidehollow Sculler.
2) If I knew I was going to play against lots of Tron of any variety, I would probably rethink my deck choice. Ghost Quarter is a pretty good card against regular Tron; however I think it's bad against Eldrazi Tron. I used to play 24 land with 2 Ghost Quarter main so maybe I would go back to that.
Honestly though: Tron decks are going to be one of your worst matchups unless you go full Hatebears with 4 GQ, Leonin Arbiter, etc so I'm not sure there's a lot you can do without essentially switching decks. I wouldn't want to play this deck in a Tron-heavy meta. I actually wouldn't want to play in Tron-heavy meta at all, haha. I'm just hoping to dodge Eldrazi Tron in tournaments. I think regular Tron is real bad against Death's Shadow and generally worse than Eldrazi so it has been pushed out of the competitive meta.
Thanks a lot for the quick answer:)
It's been a while since I've been playing paper tournaments there, but the last times I've been there, I've probably played 2 matches against Tron (never Eldrazi Tron) 3 times in a row. I will play again next Saturday (With W/B Processor this time) and look if and how the meta has changed. (The matchup against Tron is about equally bad) If regular Tron is still a thing, I think with 2-3 Stony Silence, Fulminators, Surgicals in the SB you can maybe turn it at least 50/50 after Sideboard, but I don't know if it is worth it. Stony Silence is also good against Affinity and Lantern, Surgical against many decks and Fulminator against Valakut, so maybe it's worth a try:) If I would go to a GP or be playing online, I wouldn't worry about this 1 bad matchup and just accept it.
Yes, Mutavault is great but it's more icing than cake. I would consider playing an additional creature or two over Collective Brutality and the 3rd Thoughtseize but I think you should be fine as is. You could also play Blinkmoth Nexus instead if you have that
I just got back from an fnm level event today only got two games in but ive been impressed with the deck in those two games. I was playing
4x dark confidant
4x gifted eitherborn
3x tidehowllow sculler
3x smugglers copter
3x liliana of the veil
2x gideon ally of zendikar
4x iok
2x thoughtseize
4x lingerig souls
1x collective brutality
4x path
3x push
4x marshflats
1x windswept heath
2x godless shrine
4x conccealed courtyard
4x shambling vents
2x mutavault
1x urborg
4x swamp
1x plains
I played vs counters company and affinity. I don't think affinity is bad but playing copter is super good vs them. It kills or trades with all their creatures and blocks the etched champion. It was funny playing a colored deck that had colorless blockers in mutavault and copter. It also was absurdly good being able to cycle discard and lands late game for action and won me the game. I at one point had bob in play flipping lands and then crew the copter to cycle them. It makes playing 23 lands feel way less like a flood and it makes flipping lands with bob when you need action way better. As a midrange deck i think copter fixes a lot of problems it helps us have a late game card advantage engine. I thought copter was bad it seems bad on paper since you can't play it on two and one of our other super good teo drops like bob or tidwhowllow but oh well. Aetherborn also felt very good he let me keep two bobs out and not care about loss of life since two life is higher then my decks avg cmc. Plus he could swing in everyturn so my opponent couldn't try to ride out the bob.
Assuming you can crew on turn 3, it's better to play Copter than Bob on turn 2. Looting vs drawing an extra card is not that different on turn 3 and Copter is a way better clock. Copter is also way harder to kill. For instance you could go t1 Shambling Vent, t2 Copter, t3 Inquisition take their removal, Bob, crew Copter. If you play t2 Bob they just kill it.
What did you use to generate that? Love seeing data here
Also that seems to be a strong piece of evidence for mutavault. Without you only have 12 crew members, with it 16 (although I don't think I'd be too happy if I were mutavault crewing on turn 3).
I think you are generally right however i think if you know that the coast is clear turn 2 for bob or thar your opponent has to top deck a kill spell it may be better to play bob on two. Especially against a deck like counter company or affinity so that you can have turn 2 bob into turn 3 copter, discard or keep up spor removal and have a blocker if need be.against decks that are mid range like abzan jund and deathshadow i agree. Although doing this sequence either way into death shadow or jund without discard first is really asking to get two for oned with k command. That is the one downside to playing sculler and coopter you give them the option to two for one you or blow you out. I guess its already a built in two for one with discard get back a dude so its kind of a moot point, but it seems way better when you can use all the modes to good effect. For crewing purposes are you considering cards like mirrion crusader and aetherborn as crew members since they can usually do more attackig on their own if they come down t2? I think 15-16 is the best place to be on that you get diminishing returns for each additional crew member you put in. Going from 14-15 you increase your odds by two percent which is almost unnoticeable. After that you are only increasing your odds by a little more than a single percentage point after that. I think after you hit 15-16 which is pretty easy with mutavaults you are good. Id rather have additional removal or discard then additional creatures especially since there isn't a lot of good crew creatures once we get past bob, tidehollow souls and pack rat. At that point i think you start looking at brimaz and really start looking into going super wide. Atm 11 creatures and 7-8 man lands with 4 souls feels pretty good. I dont think ive ever been in a situation where i cant find a way to crew the copter if i really want to. Atm im debating on if i want my 4th mutavault or my vault of the archangel as my last land.
Getting back on topic aetherborn has only impressed me since i played it he trades with everything and the lifelink is way more relevant than it seems at first.
