Hi there urweak, Search for Azcanta seems nice but as you said it might be too slow, in my opinion it is to slow. Also the ability of the land is very mana intensive and with all the digging in this deck it seems to be unneccessary.

To try and bring this thread back to life.
I've been starting to brew just straight U/B Bubble Hulk recently, to some interesting results.
This is pretty exciting as you essentially take the disruptive core of Grixis Death Shadow, but rather than trying to play Delve guys or Shadow, you just kill them when you get Hulk in yard and Footsteps in hand
Looking forward to any thoughts or opinions if anyone has gone down a similar route.
Pack Rat seems like an interesting way to try and side-step hate.
Pro to going straight U/B
1. Largely Painless manabase
2. Simplifies your mana requirements
3. You're almost a Splinter-Twin esque deck where you're either tapping out for disruption or holding mana up for instants, with the chance of using Mannequin to go off at Instant speed.
Downsides
1. This deck probably abuses Faithless Looting just as much as Dredge
2. Some SB Options you lose (EE less useful if it can't ticked to 3 every time)
3. Probably weaker to blood moon, as with Faithless looting and a heavier fetch manabase you can try to have an island or swamp in play to let you go off.
Obviously the nut-draw here is pretty great:
T1 Thoughtseize
T2 Collective Brutality, discarding Hulk
T3 Footsteps Hulk
Cards to consider: Splashing Red for Faithless Looting or Izzet Charm, playing Liliana of the Veil or Search for Azcanta, moving to more discard outlets such as Strategic Planning or Taigam's Scheming or potentially Thought Scour.
Other options are to go to a more instant heavy deck that focuses on Makeshift Mannequin over Footsteps.
I went to two modern mondays with grixis variety (relatively standard decklist) of bubble hulk and went 2-2 and 3-2. Anyhow, for UB version, you could try Glimpse the Unthinkable. I saw one decklist from hareruya run it.
My side looks like this: 1x Echoing Truth, 1x Venser, 2x Collective Brutality, 2x Steel Sabotage, 2x Swan Song, 3x Thoughtseize, 3x Leyline of Sanctity, 1x Grave Titan. I'm not running any Thru the Breach because I have none.
Bad MUs are faster combo decks that can counter (storm), midrange or control decks that have discard and counterspells, path to exile decks, or any opponent that draws his or her grave-hate in post-board games. Jeskai flash versions with Queller are pain in the ass, I have yet to win against that deck. However, I'm not really experienced with the deck with less than 50 matches (around 100 games) played under my belt..
@treachtv
Do you really have no way to fight grave hate except the Woodfall primus? I play 5 spells,1 with split second to destroy Rest in Peace or Leyline of the Void and I find it more than neccessary to have ways to fight them, because otherwise I just lose with this deck.
Sometimes I think about a way to have another wincon except the combo or Grave titan beats in the deck to maybe make it more reliable, do you think it's worth it or does it take the deck to far away from it's origin?

Venser, Echoing Truth, counterspells (Swan, Steel Sabotage, Izzet Charm) and discard are what I use to fight gravehate. Problem is that I don't have any green-producing lands so I cannot cast those spells. RiP I can counter/discard/bounce and go off next round, but I usually fold to Leyline unless I'm able to bounce it.
I also have bounce spells, but bouncing the hate card setting up your yard for the combo and cast Footsteps in the same turn is at best 6 mana ( U1BB2 ) in the UB Version and in my version it could be U1BB2 or U1RB2. I think that is very much. With a destoy effect, they need to have a second hate card the following turn or you have another turn to combo off.

Nah, I just picked up the deck for the first time in 6 months last night at my local FNM. Went to a very lackluster 3-2 and all of the wins were against Tier 3 or lower decks. Last time I took this to a Comp REL event I went 1-3 with it. I love the deck but I've had varied success with it. I really like the look of Wedges more disruptive U/B list though. I could see giving that thing a spin.
Hi All,
To update, U/B was very disruptive in testing, but actually struggled to find a great discard outlet, Thirst for Knowledge and Pieces of the Puzzle were great but a bit too slow, so shifted back to Grixis because Faithless Looting is the strongest at what it does, and Izzet Charm proves to be very efficient, especially compared to Remand.
However, it did prompt another brewing session (after being frustrated that Worldly Tutor or Eldamri's Call weren't legal, and Summoner's Pact awkward to combo with) to see just how fast and streamlined you could get Bubble Hulk.
Running it through a quick 50 game goldfish, it averaged a turn 3.53 kill, with 2 Fizzles/Mulls into oblivion. Likely faster in reality once I/you get the hang of mulligans. Happy to post the full excel spreadsheet of games, average amount of pain taken, and a note on the game(s) if its of interest.
One thing to note was Mishra's Bauble WAY over-performed, having that card with either Opt or Serum Visions and a Fetchland just felt like cheating with how quickly you could get through your deck.
Would be interested on people's thoughts on whether you'd keep or mull these hands:
1. 3 land Body Double Footsteps Traverse Serum
2. Tarn, 2 Hulk, Footsteps, Fanatic, Opt, Izzet
3. Hulk, Footsteps, Fanatic, 2 land, Street Wraith
I would only keep the first two hands. My thoughts are:
1. First hand has enough manipulation to work. You can dig up to 3 cards with your serum and all you want is a Hulk+discard of some sorts. You can even draw for the turn and discard without playing a land. If you had the same hand on 6, with one less card, would you consider keeping it? I'd say yes.
If you're on the draw, it is easier to keep this hand.
2. This is almost a keep. I would keep it on the draw, but Fanatic makes me want to mulligan. He is useless in your hand and a scry on 6 would probably be better.
3. This is a somewhat keepable hand, but I'd rather have 6 + scry. You need discard outlets and a land, and all you have is a Street Wraith. I wouldn't say it is enough.

God that list is horrible. The combo with Marionette Master is so fragile, it's pretty ridiculous. Like in response to the Fabricate trigger they kill Master. Now you've done 8 damage to your opponent and have no way to win the game. No thank you.

I wanted to run a transformative sideboard. My initial plan was emrakul-breach but that was before I discovered they were both $40 cards. I think madcap is a nice alternative because it’s really easy to just sideboard in hopefully surprise an opponent who’s boarded into lots of gy hate. Would appreciate any suggestions!
EDIT: just discovered that platinum emperion turns off all fetchlands. May need to rethink the way this deck is built lol.
you only need 4 mana to go off with either combo, so platinum emperion shutting off fetch lands isn't a big deal. just remember to kick those mishra's bauble out of the deck when you switch.
I was running traverse the ulvenwald in ponza and one match up forgot to kick one of the bauble and damn that madcap hurt!!!
maybe run Desperate Ravings in place of cathartic reunion, its an instant that would give you more types for turning on the traverse.???
It's honestly a bit of a mess. Ingot chewer is nice because you can tutor it with traverse, kinda proud of that one. I feel like abrupt decay is awesome in the board and 3-of feels right, but the nature's claims on top of it may be unnecessary as might be the lightning axe.
I feel like this deck is one or two cards away from actually being quite legit, and whether that card needs to be printed or already exists I'm not sure.

Took the above deck to modern FNM, went 1-3 unforuntately. With that said, the games felt mostly quite close and I think with slightly better luck they could have swung my way.
Round 1 - 0-2 v infect
This one didn't really feel close. G1 I tried to go off and got spell pierce'd, G2 I got killed on turn 3 before I could do anything.
Round 2 - 2-1 v Hollow One
Combo'd off G1, lost G2 to an unexpected Leyline of the Void (I'd boarded expecting spellbombs), then won G3 through leyline thanks to nature's claim.
Round 3 - 1-2 v BW pox
G1 my hand just got absolutely stripped relentlessly and I just couldn't get any luck off the top. G2 was a grind that thankfully went my way, G3 I kept a greedy 1-land hand with serum visions as my only castable and just never got there. I was banking on the fact that my hand was otherwise good and the pox deck was pretty slow, but given the innate LD in pox it was definitely a mistake to keep a land light hand. This deck mulligans pretty well so I should have just gone for it.
Round 4 - 0-2 v Storm
At this point I was playing for the fun of it so my play may not have been the tightest. Lost G1 after my opponent did a big empty the warrens turn. I had all the pieces to combo, but unfortunately I had drawn both body doubles and one was stuck in my hand with only three mana on board (maybe I'm wrong, but it's impossible to combo with one double in hand and one in the yard unless you have a viscera seer or neonate already on board, right?). Anyways in G2 I could have pulled it off, but I absent-mindedly discarded a fetchland that could have fetched a swamp and got blood mooned. I then immediately drew footsteps for what would have been the win and felt like an idiot.
All in all, not a great showing but the matches felt pretty close with the exception of infect which kinda felt like a worst case matchup. I think I might want to add simian spirit guides in the board to assist in matchups that are essentially just a race.
Any deckbuilding suggestions would be awesome and quite welcome!
