Are you certain that's how it works? I'm pretty sure that the Pyroclasm damage would be prevented by protection from red and that you would not get to put any -1/-1 counters on that creature. Anyway, if you face many creatures with protection from red, you could always use Kozilek's return instead of Pyroclasm.

We'd need a judge to be sure, but if I read this right Soul-Scar's ability is a replacement-effect to the damage, basicly turning sweepers into Black Sun's Zenith. I remember this discussion was brought up in Scars standard with Mirran Crusader facing the zenith, and in conclusion he dies.
Anyway I'm on spellbombs so pro-red ain't an issue to me, but it would be an interesting alternative. Not a big fan of Kozilek's.

Good question. I feel like the wording on Soul-Scar in relation to protection on something like a Kor Firewalker wont work because the damage that Soul-Scar would replace is never happening. Red cards cannot damage a creature with protection from Red unless we cast an Unstable Footing or the new Aftermath card Insult//Injury beforehand. Black Sun's Zenith affecting Mirran Crusader works because BSZ is neither targeting nor damaging the Crusader.
If this card ends up working vs. Pro-Red then HELL YEAH! But I don't think it does.
Hey all. Just played in a 61 player SCG IQ in Findlay Ohio on Saturday. Finished in Top 8. I am hoping it gets posted on Star City Games Website at some time.
This was my first big tournament with this deck. I have played in small 15-20 player ones but nothing like this before. All the details of the matches are a little fuzzy but I will try my best.
Match 1 - Grixis Control (2-0) 1-0 Overall
Game 1 - I win die roll and get a Blood Moon to stick on turn 3 which pretty much locks him down all game.
Game 2 - He counters my first Blood Moon and I wait a couple turns and bait out a Cryptic Command on Koth and play Blood Moon again which wins the game.
Notes: Not much else to say for this match-up. Seems pretty good for Skred as Blood Moon just wins the game almost by itself. They don't really do much other than Serum Visions or suspend Ancestral Vision. I just play my stuff right away and don't wait unless you need to bait a counter spell first.
Match 2 - Bant Eldrazi (2-0) 2-0 Overall
Game 1 - He plays Noble and I Skred it. Turn 2 he plays another Noble and I Skred it. Turn 3 he plays Eldrazi Displacer and on my turn 3 I play Blood Moon which locks him out and I ride Koth and Stormbreath to victory.
Game 2 - He plays Noble I Skred it. Next he plays Birds and Noble. I only play Mind Stone. His turn 3 he plays Thought Knot and takes my Blood Moon. I play Chandra and minus her for 4 damage. He then plays Displacer. I don't draw anything to use and he attacks Chandra and plays another Thought Knot. I eventually get Bolt for Displacer and Roast for Thought Knot which draws me Koth. He gets one land away from playing Drowner of Hope but a couple turns attacking with Koth and I get Emblem with and win.
Notes: Blood Moon again here is really good. Being able to have early interaction against Birds and Noble is key in this match-up. Also Roast is awesome since it can take down Thought Knot, Reality Smasher or Drowner of Hope.
Match 3 - Grixis Control (2-0) 3-0 Overall
This is the guy who eventually wins the whole tournament. Games go about how they did in Match 1. Blood Moon wins the games. He was able to stick a couple Snapcasters and block for a while but Pia and Kiran are too much for him and I win. Don't remember a whole lot on this match.
Match 4 - Some type of Red/Black Eldrazi I think (2-0) 4-0 Overall
Game 1 - He Thoughtseizes my Blood Moon. I don't do much first couple turns. He would have been able to Thought-Knot on turn 3 but doesn't draw the land. I draw Blood Moon and next turn Koth which wins.
Game 2 - He plays Pithing Needle naming Koth. I don't play much first couple turns, just land and Mind Stone. He plays Lost Legacy naming Blood Moon. I play Pia and Kiran and he plays Hangarback Walker. We take a few turns attacking and I get Skred for Hangarback and then Anger to get rid of everything. He doesn't play anything and I play Stormbreath which wins the game.
Notes: Game seemed pretty good for skred. Nothing to bad to worry about. I have no idea about this type of deck with the Black Red version but he finished 4-2 so it wasn't that bad of a deck.
Match 5 and 6 we all draw because it secures us a spot in the Top 8. So overall at this time I am 4-0-2 and haven't lost a single game.
Top 8 Match - Elves 1-2
Game 1 - I am higher seed so I am on the play. I forget the exact sequencing of this game but he plays a ton of Elves and I Anger. I play Stormbreath and attack. He eventually gets me down to 7 and I am dead if I pass turn. He is also and 7. I crack Relic draw a Bolt and attack for 4 and bolt for 3 which wins me the game.
Game 2 - He gets a really fast start. I try to hold of his Elves with Skred, Bolt, and Anger. He plays Collected Company at end of my turn and gets 2 Elves, I forget the names. On his turn plays Lead the Stampede and reveals 4 creatures. He just overwhelms me and I don't have enough removal and lose.
Game 3 - I have a slow start. He gets a slow start as well. He finds a few elves and I get Anger for them. He plays another Lead the Stampede and shows 4 creatures again. He plays a couple of them knowing I could Anger at any moment and doesn't want to commit his whole hand to the board. I don't really find a threat other than Koth which he kills. I do eventually find another Anger but he Companies at end of turn and finds 2 threats and plays 3 Elves during his turn along with Chord for Shaman of the Pack and kills me.
Notes: This match-up while on paper may seem good for Skred just was really hard. They have to much card advantage with Collected Company and Lead the Stampede. I could't keep up with all of the creatures. He could just hold a lot of them in his hand and only cast a couple to get in damage. I was forced to use Anger and then he would unload his hand again with more Elves. Plus Lead the Stampede revealing 4 creatures twice was just brutal.
Some thoughts on Skred Red. Very solid deck. Blood Moon right now is just insane. Good in almost every match-up and can just about win on it's own. Pia and Kiran were awesome. So much value in that card. Koth and Chandra were very good. Got to emblem Koth twice which was nice. Chandra gets a lot of damage in and every mode on her is good. Eternal Scourge finally worked well for me. Was able to block, remove him from graveyard with Relic and play him again. I don't use Scrying Sheets because I have had hands with only 1 land being Scrying Sheets which I would have kept if the land was a Mountain. Also I think I have only ever used the draw ability on Scrying Sheets a handful of times in other matches. And double red is crucial in this deck. This deck is really solid in the meta with early creature interaction and then getting huge power with Koth, Stormbreath, Chandra, and Pia and Kiran.
Overall went 4-1-2 my only Game and Match loss was in the Top 8. I won $50, a playmat and a Top 8 Pin. Was a very fun tournament. Looking forward to playing more. Let me know what you think.
It's not a guy that will stick for long as he'll fall to just about every removal in modern. The strength of our threats is their resilience, with Reckoner and P&K being exceptions due to their value. This one doesn't apply to either.
He does trigger on opposing fetches tho which might give him a sligh potential, but imo not in Skred.
Maybe a good sb threat against Tron since they often side out their Clasms post-board, but I suppose Rabblemaster still beats his clock and is more flexible as extra threats to pull in.
What do you think about Glaring Suns ?
a 3-mana sweeper that can be cycled for 3 when it is unnecessary seems not bad.
Slightly worse than Anger of the Gods when we compare the effects, which are actually relevant on keeping opponent's graveyard out of fuel or definitely getting rid of problems like Kitchen Finks or Voice of Resurgence. However, I feel like it is a better card on unknown local's meta, due to its ability to eventually replace itself when you're playing against a deck without decent targets.
FWIW, which I know is not much, I am not feeling the hype on Harsh Mentor for our deck either. Feels like a sideboard card against Affinity and I don't know how much we need that.
Yes, I know it screws up fetchlands, but we're playing Blood Moon, we can screw with fetchlands anyway.
Now Sweltering Suns seems really interesting. There's a lot of matchups where wipes doesn't do a lot and ends up being sided out, so I think the ability to get rid of those awkward draws against certain matchups weights up for the lack of exile.
Even without Anger we got good game against Company and Dredge, but if it's too present a couple Angers in the sb too should do fine.
When Grave-Troll was banned, I pulled Angers out for Slagstorm. I think the bolt to the face option is what we want more than cycling in matchups where sweeps like Anger is a dead card. Just my thoughts.

The selling part of cycling is the instant speed. Sure it costs 3, but it can dig into missing lock piece, threat, or land-drop without tapping out.
I'm not disliking Slagstorm, I also played it while dredge was away, but it was lackluster to tap out for it on your own turn for 3dmg in dead matchups. Especially if you're already behind.
In the end Anger is still the best sweeper if that's what you need tho, but I'm siding it out enough to give the Suns a shot.
Unfortunately, any creature we play that does not pass the bolt test isn't very good for the deck because they end up being a bolt magnet. The same is true for higher cmc cards but with path to exile (glorybringer, the new god). We're essebtially giving our opponents good targets for theirnpaths

Dragon's Claw - Provides immediate life gain and we can easily trigger the life gain aspects as well.
Sun Droplet - Can slowly regain all life lost, but at a slower pace. Also worth noting that Skullcrack can't prevent all the life gain.
I feel like Droplet is better overall versus aggressive decks, but Burn variants are the target deck for these sideboard slots.
4x Koth of the Hammer
4x Lightning Bolt
4x Skred
4x Blood Moon
2x Stormbreath Dragon

This bypasses Leyline of Sanctity, doesn't trigger off of our Scrying Sheets and Mind Stones, redirects damage to planeswalkers, and the lifelink from Batterskull should be a nice touch.
