* Yea everybody plays 2-3 Scoozes. I'm not going to tell you I'm sure about playing the fullset. However, I will tell you that I tried most of the alternatives (Finks, Witness, Courser, Tracker) and found them all unimpressive and situational, hence the decision to max out on Scoozes to get an advantage against any deck relying on graveyard. I think if I were to cut the fourth, it would probably be for the second Kalitas rather than these other 3 drops;
I'm a long time lurker in this thread. And one of those people who play 3 scavenging oozes.. but decided to add a 4th one after seeing your post. My local meta is home to Grixis DS and Dredge decks, so the extra ooze is useful. That allows me to remove one grave hate card from the sideboard, which free up a slot for other match ups.
Slaughter Pact can be a good choice, especially with Dark Confident, but the no black creature clause can really be a set back (as is the no artifact creature that comes with Go for the Throat). What you expect to play will change those few slots. I would default to Path to Exile if uncertain.

Dismemeber isn't the right card for this deck, nor is Go for the Throat. Definitely not Slaughter Pact. Slaughter Pact was used because of Kalitas, and that was mainly in jund
Reid absolutely cuts Bob when he plays against burn, he plays a match against burn in the Jund video set that he posted a few months ago and cuts Bob and Thoughtseize to bring in Kitchen Finks, Collective Brutality, and Fulminator Mage. If you play Bob against Burn, they just won't attack with their creatures, Bob will do damage to you, and they'll just burn you out with spells.
Bob is good against Affinity because running out of gas is one of the ways we lose that matchup, and we already have Thoughtseize and Liliana that we're cutting and only so much we can bring in.
I've been playing Black Green Rock like decks for as long as I can remember. So to start out I don't agree with several of the numbers. Let's start with mana base:
While I do love hissing quagmire compared to treetop village, 3 is the correct number. 4 is a guarantee you'll have them stuck in hand or draw them when you don't need them. Ghost quarter is far superior to tec edge but I might consider testing field of ruin. I run 3 quarter plus they work well with tracker if you kill your own land.
Creatures:
I think the musts are
4 Bob
4 Goyf
2 Scavenging Ooze
I've been a fan of Tracker more than others. The Rock functions as mid range attrition deck so Tracker is a great resource for card advantage. As for Eternal Witness, I might shave down to one but I find it to be quite useful in some matches. Kitchen Finks is very good in a burn and control heavy meta. Kalitas I have not tested in BG. I was considering it but I dunno if it's needed.
Spells:
I think the proper discard package with the current meta would be 4 iok, 3 thoughtseize and a 4th seize in the board for combo. I do like a combination of spells when it comes to removal.
3 Abrupt Decay (4 is too many)
4 push
2 pulse
2 brutality (burn is a rough matchup without these)
1 dismember/go for the throat
4 Liliana of the Veil
1 Vraskas contempt(I'm considering this against eldrazi tron, ctrl and mirror)
I find we flood a lot with this deck so I think considering thragtusk or the new vraska in the board would be interesting.
I'm curious other people's opinions. I do like some of the new stuff from Ixalan.
Anyone know of some good SB tech against big mana decks? Like RG Land Destruct.. I usually play against a value oriented version using trackers main and then obstinate baloth out of the side.
Life from the Loam is a good one against Ponza specifically. Crucible of Worlds is also great if you're playing a list with GQ/Tec Edge.
As far as big mana like Tron, it's Fulminator + Surgical all the way.
Fulminator is not only for Tron though. It's excellent against other Control decks and some combo decks. I've won a few games against Tron with Fulminator + Surgical myself.
I think Bob is a fine choice as long as you know he's good in your meta.
4 Fatal Push
3 Abrupt Decay (I really love decay and firmly believe 3 is the correct number)
2 Maelstrom Pulse (Pulse is more expensive than PtE and only sorcery speed, but I do want to have some removal for creatures with cc > 4. Plus, pulse occasionally has some upside against tokens, as well as non-creature, non-lands permanents)
This looks to me a great deal like the removal suite typically run in straight GB or Rock decks. I personally am a big fan of Maelstrom Pulse. I am not such a big fan of Fatal Push however as it can be dead - really, really dead. Abrupt Decay can also be dead but three in the 75 doesn't seem bad to me. Path to Exile may feel bad, but it is rarely dead. Given the popularity of various Eldrazi decks, one suspects some number of PtE is desirable.
I'm usually not on here that much but I check in from time to time. Recently I've been trying out a new leaner build of Junk - kind of like the one SiegeDino is running - and I though I'd share the list with you guys. Maybe you have some good input or maybe someone will be inspired to try it.
always when i'm playing Abzan i feel like its inconsistent. I can never seem to have a solid gameplan since my deck and draws act so differently from game to game. So i wanted to make a more redundant, consistent deck by putting more 4-ofs in the deck and less 2/3/1-ofs.
Reasons behind this + what i wanted to achieve:
- I want a reliable, strong turn 2 drop
- I wanted to maximize my best case scenario: turn 1 discard, turn 2 2-drop, turn 3 2drop+discard/removal or 3drop
- With this build i feel you won't waste any mana each turn. I wanted also to maximize playing 2 cards per turn as fast and as consistently as possible. For example: Turn 3 2-drop+removal, turn 4 2drop+2drop etc.. no mana wasted, all resources used.
- I think the power of BGx decks shine when you can play 2 cards per turn.
- With a lot of 4-ofs in the deck i wanted to make the deck perform as consistently as possible.
- I think this deck can get agressive a lot faster cuz of so many 2drops, perhaps improving our tron matchups.

I beat it infect, uw control, affinity, storm, and Jund deaths shadow.
I know the main and board is pretty different from what's been going around.
First off tron in all forms is declining and creature matchups seem to be increasing with combo also creeping up a bit, so my deck is built to beat those matchups and ignore tron.
Wrench mind is almost perfect for those matchups because it's almost always a clean 2 for 1, and in those matchups you have want your opponent in topdeck mode immediately. Wrench mind worked out really well for me, but it might not be in the right quantity. I think I want either 2 or 3 and turn the cut ones into inquisition to get more turn 1 disruption. Hell it might be correct to just go 4 thoughtseize 4 inquisition. Thing is, in a matchup like humans, elves, storm, etc. you really don't care what gets discarded, so the two for one is better.
I am mainboarding one gaddock teeg and I have another in the board, and I want a third. This card is hilariously powerful, I can't believe he's not a staple. He hits something in almost every matchup. Some things he hits include, supreme verdict, cryptic command, company, chord, gifts, past in flames, scapeshift, Karen, ugin, all walkers outsid of little Gideon and the lilianas, chalice on 2, all is dust, conflagration, and I'm sure I'm missing a ton. I think he's better than ooze right now.
Anyway, just wanted to share my experience.

If MTG is a part of your life, the formats are like relationships:
Standard/Block = The on-again, off-again holiday fling
Modern/Vintage/Legacy = Stable, homely. A ***** after absence/misreading
Limited/Sealed = Heart breaking free spirit
Commander/Cube = Agreeable, needy and expensive
Pauper/Peasant = Sweet, kind, practical, but shy and boring
It's rather slapped together and I hope to add some more creature spice to it - I'd love to have one copy of Dark Confidant main-deck. I've pretty much ripped-off someone's Abzan Traverse list and made a few changes. Rock with Rex plays a little differently than Abzan or even normal Rock, but I haven't taken a great deal of time to think things through. I definitely want to find room for Eternal Witness.

Any thoughts?
After several games, it's clear EE doesn't belong main-deck and it's less useful here in general than it is in Junk or Jund. I dumped the main-deck copy altogether for Dark Confidant.
Other changes I made after the first tournament include swapping the main-deck LtLH for Eternal Witness and the side-board Slaughter Pact for Executioner's Capsule which may not be a good choice either. The latter is a pet card and is sometimes super with Glissa.
I lost to Jund mostly due to his Bobs performing and my Flayers dying. I may be short a removal or two. I'd love to have another Push main-deck.
I beat Abzan and Eight-Rack to close out the first tournament and win second-place.
The second tournament I beat a janky Taking-Turns brew and lost pretty badly to Burn. The second game was really close even though I didn't get any of my life-gain cards. My last opponent forfeited.
All in all, it didn't feel great; Bauble is fun, Traverse didn't do much but I did get to search for a creature once or twice; I mostly got basics early. It seems this latter play is quite necessary due to the low land count.
Rex is just a pet card but this build probably isn't really up to the task of supporting him. I might try a more conventional build with one copy each of Traverse and Rex.
When the deck works it is because of Flayer. When he connects the deck works. When he doesn't, the deck pretty much doesn't perform.
I love Traverse. I think its still totally viable. Having your graveyard disrupted sucks in any version of Abzan, but it's not impossible to work through.
I played with Rallier earlier this year when traverse lists started popping up - but I think now that you can have both Lilianas in play at the same time, Liliana the Last hope would be good in ralliers place. It also helps out with Coco and other go-wide decks that we have difficulty with.
I'd like to test Bontu's Last Reckoning as well. Its downside is steep, but I'd like to see how often it's a serious problem in gameplay.
I think it would work nicely If we've managed to get 2 Lilianas on board.
Shriekmaw is my favourite card in Traverse, but could be replaced by any number of creatures. A second Tasigur might even be a good choice.
Bojuka Bog + Ghost Quarter are my flex spot lands. I've eschewed running fulminator mages - they don't do enough and eat up sideboard slots. No affinity hate other than Rec Sage in the board, but honestly - Lingering Souls + many spot removal cards is a pretty good game plan there.
Looks like a very standard Abzan sideboard.
Its difficult to evaluate the sideboard without seeing your main deck though. I might recommend running a third brutality over 1 stony silence, but you may very well be running the third CB main deck.
For reference, the main deck shell i've been seeing putting up the most consistent results looks something like this. Your sideboard would pair well with this list.
