Really? I haven't sleeved up Bant Drazi in a long time but Affinity and Burn never really used to give me trouble. Decks like Dredge, Storm, and Tron are the problem matchups
I had taken a break from magic at the right time. The era of Hogaak was an absolute miserable time to try and force my beloved Bant Eldrazi into the format. However, things are looking up with the Banning of Hogaak, and the printing of “Once upon a time” and "Oko, Thief of Crowns” I feel Bant Eldrazi can become a tiered deck again. —even if it’s not recognized as such, I’ll continue to play it as if it was. I have been testing some numbers and my current list is posted below.
Land (23)
4x Eldrazi Temple
3x Cavern of Souls
3x Brushland
3x Yavimaya Coast
2x Misty Rainforest
2x Windswept Heath
1x Breeding Pool
1x Hallowed Fountain
1x Temple Garden
1x Forest
1x Island
1x Plains
Spells (15)
4x Ancient Stirrings
2x Once Upon a Time
4x Path to Exile
2x Engineered Explosives
3x Oko, Thief of Crowns
Sideboard (15)
2x Rest in Peace
2x Stony Silence
2x Damping Sphere
2x Disdainful Stroke
3x Stubborn Denial
2x Knight of Autumn
2x Teferi, Time Raveler
A few take away thoughts.
I’m not quite ready to completely remove Engineered Explosives (EE) from the list. While Oko provides answers to many of the things EE seems so critical for, (looking at you Ensnaring Bridge) it’s not a complete replacement. In Bant Eldrazi, I have frequently used EE as a one sided wrath effect. Great against Humans, Merfolk, Jund, Affinity and Hardened Scales Affinity, All versions of Death Shadow, Infect, Devoted Druid decks, Bogles, token decks. It is rarely a dead card. I could potentially bring it down to 1 copy, but I’m a big fan of 2’s. I often feel like a single copy of a card is incredibly unreliable to draw when you need it.
There has often been a debate between Matter Reshaper and Eldrazi Skyspawner.
I have always ran Eldrazi Skyspawner, because it creates mana ramp, and it being a flier is often incredibly relevant(affinity and infect to name a few). It creates more consistency for turn 3 reality smashers. In playing Matter reshaper, I often found I wanted it to die for the card advantage effect. It is possible in the new list, it may be better, having the ability to put Oko onto the battlefield out of nowhere. More testing required here. (I just hate the thought of getting inkmothed out of nowhere.)
As far as once upon a time is concerned, I am only playing 2. I do not think it’s critical to cram 4 in to maximize the “free cast” clause of the card. Yes it’s great, but I had a hard time cutting addition cards.
I still want 2 EE, I still want to be threat dense—meaning I don’t want to cut too many creatures. Drowner of Hope is great (a little expensive, but I used to run 4- before this new era of Oko)
SIDEBOARD
It’s possible Knight of Autumn is no longer needed, as Oko, gains life and turns off problematic artifacts. (I can’t think of any relevant Enchantments that Bant Eldrazi players need to worry about except Worship.
Teferi is a new inclusion. He seems great against control turning off “instant speed”.
I stunted an opponents ancestral visions the other day. He couldn’t cast it in upkeep because Teferi says NO.
This is also new to my testing, so I can’t speak to it from a lot of experience.
Interested to hear the communities thoughts/feedback. I know this forum has been close to 0 activity, but we are due for an Eldrazi resurgence.
