Powder Keg
Orzhov Basilica
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
Draining Whelk
Twisted Abomination
Betrayal of Flesh
Hypnotic Specter
Similar initial approach to Puzzle except there's no way I'm passing Augustin here. The higher the card quality in a format the bigger tempo swing he generates. This puts me three colours without Red so I don't want the Arc Slogger!
Apex's Cube
Meloku the Clouded Mirror

Powder Keg

<Limited Clan>
P1: Ghitu Fire (between this and Meloku; probably should've taken Meloku)
P2: Ugh! Bolt and Helix in same pack. I take the Bolt, but would love the Helix.
P3: FTK. One of the best creatures ever.
P4: Shrikemaw. Removal + beater = win.
P5: Izzet Signet. Probably should've taken the Demise, but I wanted to leave open my splash options.
P6: Fire // Ice. Now, I like the Signet pick more
P7: Isochron. Looks great with two of my current picks.
P8: Gush. Just awesome.
I finally couldn't resist joining mtgsalvation since cube is my passion...
Anyways, after heavy testing with Scepter being in my cube since the beginning and having it been drafted dozens and dozens of times, me and my friends found it's much better in theory then in practice and ended up taking it out all together since the artifact slots are incredibly competitive.
What would happen is every now and then someone would stick a Fire/Ice on it or something and completely go to town, but more often it stayed in the sideboard. I've only played it once or twice in the roughly 10-15 times I've had it. The problem was, once you lay out your deck you realize you usually only have about 2 instants that cost 2 and if you played it anyways, it would end up just sitting in your hand like 70% of the time. And the thing with cube is, because of the sheer power levels of the cards, you can't afford to have a cute cards that could be busted every now and then, sit there and do nothing. More so then any other limited format I've ever played, cube is much harsher on things like mana flood, or you not being able to maximize your resources. Having a card in your hand that literally does nothing while you and your opponent battle it out with what are normally first picks, is very, very bad. When you weight the amount of times it's absolutely busted vs. the amount of times it does nothing and the every now-and-then when your opponent instantly responds with artifact removal, and the card's all of a sudden not that good.
For anyone who's never drafted a cube, you'd be down right amazed at what isn't good. For example, when I started mine I read a Starcity article that told me that after heavy testing they removed Skullclamp because it rarely did too much, I didn't believe them. Now, Clamp is only still in my cube because it's a personal favorite, but it still doesn't make the cut a lot of the time.
It's a really, really weird format, to say the least...
I agree with you that it can get insanly nuts, as you just pointed out. What I was saying though is consider this. His cube is large enough for 2 8 man drafts. What are the chances of getting more then 2 of those and a scepter?
Well Mitch, aka, GeminiDreams insisted I post my cube. And here, after fighting for an hour with tinypic, it is:
After sorting this baby, I've learned several new things:
Paladin en-Vec looks like an artifact (there's one in there by the way)
I lost my Vindicate
All my U/B spells have the same converted mana cost
I really, really like to reanimate creatures
And, to my unpleasant surprise, Ravnica duels look better then real ones.
Very nice! Powered cube with Pygmy Hippo? Yes! I've been trying to locate one for my cube, but I just couldn't find one nearby, and I'm too lazy to ebay. And yes, you do have an unhealthy obsession with reanimation, which I found to be way too strong in my cube (Having 1 Recurring Nightmare is just so ridiculous, getting it, Animate Dead, Exhume, Dread Return, Entomb and Buried Alive, etc, etc is just busted), so I took out some reanimation spells and target, and put in some graveyard hate.
I do suggest you use the spoiler tag though, as all the pictures can take up alot of space. Its used like this:
Insert Image (which would prompt you for a link)
(remove the space in both tags)
As for Isochron. I also tried to draft it multiple times, but it doesn't always work out nicely. Like Geek in the Pink said, it often sits in your hand while you wait for the right spell to imprint, or you've got the right spell, but you are under alot of pressure, so you have to use it up early before you see your Isochron. I've only taken Isochron early if I've already gotten several tutors like Enlightened, Demonic and Mystical, in which case, combined with cards that don't go terribly early like Brainstorm, you can usually find something like an Arcane Denial to put on it. There are also plenty of artifact hate in my cube to stop crazy Isochron shenanigans.
As for my personal picks out of those 8 packs, I went: Gilded Lotus (there are few cards that I'd take over Gilded Lotus, its like Sol Ring's bigger cousin, with some acceleration, you can T4 Gilded Lotus, untap, and now you've gotten T8 mana, of which there are plenty of things you can abuse with), FoF, Crystal Shard (which is often first picked in many cubes, since there are so many 187 creatures to abuse with), Shriekmaw, Ancient Tomb, Cloudstone Curio (this is pretty much Crystal Shard #2), Chronarch, Ghitu Slinger, and now I'm hoping to table the Glimpse and Gilded Drake, while grabbing as much manafixing as I can so I could play a 3/4 colour 187 abuse deck.
I don't recommend this approach to all cubes though, as some cubes you can go greedy with colour, but others reward the monocolour or 2 coloured player. It all depends on what cube you are drafting.
Thanks for the tips man, I'm new at this forum stuff so it's well appreciated. I still messed up on doing it, but I'll fix it tomorrow since I have classes tomorrow morning.
As for Pygmy Hippo, I completely lucked out. A good friend of mine whom I went to visit randomly had one in a stack. I just read it and for some reason couldn't stop laughing. I believe every cube should have one based on the fact that it's hilarious to even look at, let alone how funny it is when it works (my friend joked that he's going to take Legacy by storm after reading this thing for the first time).
Also, the reanimation spells I have, I've found, don't make for incredibly busted decks for a cube of that size. Entombing a Genesis is a lot scarier then a big creature most of the time, and my cube has answers shooting out of every colour for massive threats. It's just that, with this much, a lot of control decks end up having a reanimation subtheme. Oh well. Don't let Raya and Akroma go too late when drafting
And when it comes to cards like Perish, Boil, and Chill, I'm not the world's largest fan. A lot of the time I'll be hanging out or have some time at a tournament and me and one of my friends will do a quick one-on-one draft. Sometimes I just play like 5 one-on-ones in a row with a friend and that's my Magic intake for the day. As a result, I try to keep cards that sit in the sideboard to a minimum. I also don't like the idea of a red deck just going turn 4 Boil on some random control deck. It feels too much like "Oh that's cute that you got that and I happen to be playing blue. Guess I lose"
Some people find that that kinda thing just adds to the fun, but not me personally.
Speaking of one-on-one, I found an amazing draft format that only really works with cube and provides hours of drafting fun with one person. Remind me to post tomorrow if you care.
Meloku. I mean.... It's Meloku. Some of the other cards are good, but Meloku is just phenomenal. Some might argue that he's not as good in cube, but even with the high power level, I see this guy constantly just win games.
Fact or Fiction. Not particularly close. What did the other guy take, would be my question.
Garruk. Crystal Shard, Flametongue Kavu, and possibly Exhume are all in the running here, but in my experiences, Garruk is just ridiculous in cube.
Mystical Tutor. Shriekmaw is tempting an Dimir Aqueduct is nice because it doesn't take a spell slot while being generally awesome, but Mystical Tutor finds our best cards.
Izzet Signet. Very very close with Ancient Tomb here, but the color fixing and the fact that the two damage off Ancient Tomb has put me near lethal quickly against aggro decks makes me shy away.
Orzhov Basilica. Fire/Ice is nice especially with what we've been seeing, but the Basilica doesn't take up a spell slot and will always make the deck in addition to fixing mana.
Isochron Scepter. Signet, chronarch, search and chamber are all contenders here, but if you pick an early scepter you can ensure that it'll work in your deck.
Gush. Compared to the other cards, Gush is far ahead in power level. Worst case it's a five man inspiration, best case it's absolutely ridiculous.
For what it's worth, out of my cube I would have taken:
Rout
Future Sight
Loam (table the door hopefully!)
Chronarch
Chancery
Lens
Mulch, but if I don't think people will take it I'll take the jungle barrier.
Elder barely beats out Tusker.
Looks like I'm in the minority here.
I'm not a big fan of hosers because they make the game unfun for certain archetypes, and you don't ever maindeck them so they're usually late picks. (We usually don't play with sideboards)

Yea thats cool when 1 on 1. When we play cube it's like 4 to 6 people drafting and we play cutthroat. I will try to have an link to our cube tomorrow.
Nice cubes guies, I had one about 2/3rds built at one point but then I gave up. I had to chose between building a stack (500 card highlander prismatic communal deck) or a cube and I decided on the stack. Maybe if I ever get rich enough I will build both.
I noticed while looking at both pictured cubes neither of you played my favorite green card, Gaea's Blessing is that because the card is not good enough (understood if so) or is that because you both looked over it?

Ok - Here's me never doing cube and never playing Anything between 10th edition and Darksteel (took a long break) so i might be at a disadvantage ^^
Apex's Cube
Gilded Lotus (I would assume you could get it out turn 3 or 4 in Cube)
Fact or Fiction
Flametongue Kavu
Sower of Temptations
Izzet Signet
Fire///Ice
Isochron Scepter (Seems like a nice mechanism for Fire///Ice xD)
Gush
(I really regret not taking Meloku now.... U/R ftw?)

Pringlesman, I know you can do it! You don't have to be rich...I for one have only been playing since Kamigawa and I managed. But now I also have to be fair: I spent about $300 on it when I went to Daytona. I looked at the price of the cards, looked at my wallet and realized that the exchange rate really is as ridiculous as it sounds and I couldn't resist.
As for Gaea's Blessing, it's not so much about raw card power all the time. I mean if you look at the cube, there are several worse green cards if you compare it with Blessing in a vacuum. But the problem is, like my objection to Scepter, is it won't end up going in a lot of decks because the majority of the time it'll do nothing really relevant but cycle for one.
Also, I have no idea why Wizards tends to favour mono or two coloured so much, but they keep saying that they're trying to push it with new sets and expressed that they weren't terribly pleased with the amount of 3+ coloured decks in the last T2 as the format unfolded. So it doesn't surprise me that they built a cube that encourages this kinda thing also. With my cube there's so much mana fixing that the average deck ends up being 2 colours with one splash, and 2 splashes arn't even that uncommon. I'm not surprised that Wizards didn't want that kind of cube with their policy. I guess it's because they like the colours well defined and don't like the idea of any deck being able to do anything if you just throw in a few duel lands.
this thread makes me wish i had a digital camera. we've had our cube now for about two or three months, i'd say. and we draft it just about every weekend. pretty much every chance we get. i will eventually take some pics and post them here. my g/f has the digital camera, and my cube is at my friend's house. but when i get it back, i'll be sure and at least post the list. hopefully i'll be able to post pics to go along w/ it.
i have to say, tho, cube drafting is probably the most fun i've had w/ magic in a long long time.
For about two months now my freinds and I have been playing with a powered cube.
I don't think its been mentioned yet, but its really fun to draft it specifically to play chaos multiplayer. Its the only draft format that doesn't become a giant creature staring contest in chaos.
Plus with the power level of the cards, there gets to be some really sick turns.
To lesurgo or to anyone who wants to express his opinion :
I'm playing a cube draft tomorrow as I already made mine. It has over 360 cards.
Do you think I should add more cards (most of them will be proxies for sure) as you did and go up to 400 or 500 ?
Is the benefit big enough to do so ?
Lesurgo, you did not include the power 9, do you really miss it ?
to others: do you think you have to include power 9 and why ?
Edit: Lesurgo: could you identify the missing cards of your cube :
Just search for < or >
Blue wasn't my best color.
It was a fun exercise to see how many cards I could recognize or search for.

A: Its not really important that by tommorow you have a bigger cube, the reason (as I understand) that cubes are over 360 is so there is variation from draft to draft.
B: No
C: See above
D: I'm not lesurgeo
E: Its a prefrence thing, A random mox in a draft deck isn't going to make it that much better since moxes are at premo value in the first few turns. Ancestral Recall is nice to have of course, and TIme Twister benifits both players, TIme walk is a bomb though. I'd say proxy them if you don't have them.

In general, my cube lacks a heavy combo element to it, and I prefer it that way. While it doesn't have some of the crazy interactions that other cubes can present, almost every card is solid on it's on, thus making decks more consistant and solid all around for the most part. We do play with sideboards (hence Naturalize effects being present), as they are a part of traditional limited and therefore we concluded that they should be a part of Cube as well.
There are a few cards I have in my cube that I'm surprised to see that the majority of you guys don't have in yours. Some examples include Fledgling Djinn, Ghazban Ogre, Magus of the Disk, Llanowar Reborn, and Incendiary Command. I've especially found Incendiary Command to be extremely gamebreaking in the few Cube drafts I've played with it, but that also maybe because my cube is very skewed towards multicolored aggro, and the Command can both destroy a key manasource and wreck most of your opponent's guys. It does cost 5 mana though, and maybe I've been lucky to be living that long against aggro, but it does do some pretty neat stuff for 5 mana. I will try to post a list of my cube once this semester at school is over and I can get home and sort everything out.
Do you think I should add more cards (most of them will be proxies for sure) as you did and go up to 400 or 500 ?
Is the benefit big enough to do so ?
I originally had a small cube, and then I just kept adding it to it. 720 just feels like the right number because it means you can have two 8 man drafts going on at once, but enough for two six man drafts (or one 12 person draft) is also probably a reasonable size.
Lesurgo, you did not include the power 9, do you really miss it ?
do you think you have to include power 9 and why ?
Power nine just don't make the game fun. They're all so absurd. Yes, I realize that my cube has both Sol Ring and Balance, but it's nice to have one or two "cards above cards" so to speak that are like cracking a bomb rare in a real draft. Playing a game where someone opens with three mana sources on the first turn with no drawback or a first turn Ancestral Recall just harms the play experience if it occurs too often. The goal of a cube, in addition to play with awesome and powerful cards, is to be fun, and playing the power nine sucks some of the fun out of it if it happens all the time.
Edit: Lesurgo: could you identify the missing cards of your cube :
Just search for < or >
Blue wasn't my best color.
It was a fun exercise to see how many cards I could recognize or search for.
Unknown cards are in bold. Pretty good. You found most of them! Thanks for taking the time to make a list, that was very helpful, and a fun exercise.

I don't own the first two, and they definitely aren't so necessary that I'd go crazy looking for them, although they are nice additions. Magus of the Disk was cut because I was trying to make aggro better and because it didn't really feel necessary. It's much worse than actual Disk. Llanowar Reborn is interesting, and probably worth trying. I had Incendiary command in, but I took it out. For a five mana sorcery, it just isn't as good as a lot of other red spells at what it does. It was never played in our drafts. I don't think it's a bad cube choice though, it might have just been underplayed.
Do you guys sleeve your cube? I just don't have 400-500 of the same color sleeve going on. And also, don't you need a crapload more sleeves of the same color, so that all players can put lands in and sleeve the rest of their deck. For a 720 card cube and the lands to go with it, that is like 1100 sleeves.
Right now, I just have them in many different colored sleeves. Yes this may cause cheating when you pass a pack and see that the person to your right took the red sleeved card.
I'm rambling now, but what are others doing with their cubes.
Nevinyrral's Disc
Powder Keg
Orzhov Basilica
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
Draining Whelk
Twisted Abomination
Betrayal of Flesh
Hypnotic Specter
Similar initial approach to Puzzle except there's no way I'm passing Augustin here. The higher the card quality in a format the bigger tempo swing he generates. This puts me three colours without Red so I don't want the Arc Slogger!
Apex's Cube
Meloku the Clouded Mirror

My Cube
CubeCobra: https://cubecobra.com/cube/overview/5f5d0310ed602310515d4c32
Cube Tutor: http://cubetutor.com/viewcube/1963
Those are my picks for Apex.
Meloku, FoF, FTK, Shower of Tempation, Suffocating Blast, Fire/Ice, Frantic Search, Fireslinger
Those are the picks for a friend of mine who owns a Cube. He struggled between FTK and Crystal Shard.
If you have..
fire/ice
impulse
counterspell
remand
mana drain
mana leak
memory lapse
ancestral recall
echoing truth
brainstorm
opt
and more just in blue its obviously going to be insane.. if you don't have many 2 casting cost things its obviously going to suck.
Anyways, comments, questions, concerns?
Check out my pauper cube!

Ever thought about adding 1 sided cards such as perish, boil, and chill?
Thanks for sharing your cubes guys!
Yea thats cool when 1 on 1. When we play cube it's like 4 to 6 people drafting and we play cutthroat. I will try to have an link to our cube tomorrow.
I noticed while looking at both pictured cubes neither of you played my favorite green card, Gaea's Blessing is that because the card is not good enough (understood if so) or is that because you both looked over it?

Current MTGO Rating: 1880-1910
All in one turn,
Sneak attack
Siege-Gang
Arc-Slogger
Spectal Force
i have to say, tho, cube drafting is probably the most fun i've had w/ magic in a long long time.

Follow me. I tweet.
I don't think its been mentioned yet, but its really fun to draft it specifically to play chaos multiplayer. Its the only draft format that doesn't become a giant creature staring contest in chaos.
Plus with the power level of the cards, there gets to be some really sick turns.
I'm playing a cube draft tomorrow as I already made mine. It has over 360 cards.
Do you think I should add more cards (most of them will be proxies for sure) as you did and go up to 400 or 500 ?
Is the benefit big enough to do so ?

My
540> 360 Powered CubeA: Its not really important that by tommorow you have a bigger cube, the reason (as I understand) that cubes are over 360 is so there is variation from draft to draft.
B: No
C: See above

I originally had a small cube, and then I just kept adding it to it. 720 just feels like the right number because it means you can have two 8 man drafts going on at once, but enough for two six man drafts (or one 12 person draft) is also probably a reasonable size.
Sure! This way I'll have a full list of my cube.
Right now, I just have them in many different colored sleeves. Yes this may cause cheating when you pass a pack and see that the person to your right took the red sleeved card.
I'm rambling now, but what are others doing with their cubes.
