I was against this card until I tried it in a standard deck. It's not really doing much damage, but if you can clear blockers by playing lots of bolts or counterspells I think he's phenomenal. I think he's secretly a UR card but is just sorta OK in red. I prefer him to a lot of alternatives anyway, so, works for me.
This card has nothing to do with Legion Loyalist. Sure, they are both 1/1 for one haster. Comparaison ends there. First, Bomat Courrier is a artifact, so artifact.dec can use it if needed to increase their number of playable artifacts. It's also a premium source of CA for the red agressive deck and for such a small cost. Sure, it needs to connect to get multiple triggers on. But I've seen the card in a lot on situations and drawing three cards out of it on the play happens pretty often. Not the best card versus midrange (RDW has a well known weakness against this archetype anyway), but it's super good against anything else. Being into your red deck will enhance your win% against the field for sure. On top of that, it's also great in BR artifact aggro deck since it plays both role at the same time.
I have been inspired to give Courier a try out after reading the discussion in the random cube card forum. The innocuous little guy turned out to be a star in constructed, which of course may not translate to cube - worth a look though.
Think the card is good... I currently rank it slightly lower than most of the 2/1's for R, but higher than anything in the next tier... Definitely better than legion loyalist
The goal is to pop bomat courier after your creatures are getting stone walled, to look for the final burn spell or two to finish the opponent off. It's not good in an agro deck with mostly creatures trying to go very wide.
I remember one game where I was playing a sultai control/value deck against a mono red opponent..
Opponent went turn 1 mox emerald , mountain attacked with both goblin guide and bomat courier. UGH.
I went turn 1 mox diamond + bayou and debated which creature to abrupt decay.
I abrupt decayed the goblin guide because duh 2 damage > 1... But a couple turns later I regretted it. Wasn't able to block or kill the bomat courier until it had 4 cards underneath it, at which point my opponent was near hellbent. Those 4 cards turned into MUCH more than the 2-3 extra damage I would have taken from the goblin guide.
Not saying it's better than goblin guide obviously, but it woke me up as to how good the card can be.
I've been quite impressed with it since introducing it as a part of an overhaul to make artifacts more of a thing, although I've found it's just fine in any old red deck.
