However, embalm is an ability, unlike flashback. It cannot be countered when you play it from your graveyard. And FWIW, I think there are more cards in the cube that interact with the creature card type than sorcery card type.
True, but there are other downsides. If the creature is exiled, or shuffled into the library, you can't get the back half. And one of the biggest upsides of both Call of the Herd and Lingering Souls (the two cubable flashback token creators) was the fact that you could put multiple cards worth of creatures on the battle field at the same time and really pressure your opponent. Embalm creatures can't do that.
If my opponent wants to blow their Plow / O-Ring effects on my Duelist, be my guest.
Well, Duelist isn't cube playable, so arguing that he's so bad that you'd be happy your opponent removed it isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. The fact that exile effects blank the ability to get the back half of these cards is a serious strike against it when comparing it to flashback cards.
No. Lone Missionary is good because it can be abused with shenanigans of all kinds. Losing that interaction (and guaranteed impact in the face of removal) makes it worse, IMO.
Going to test this one as well over the flashy energy dwarf from last block. I will definitely want to draft this creature in my superfriends, control, and slower midrange decks.
I decided to come back to Trueheart Duelist after testing Adanto Vanguard. While Adanto Vanguard, is more aggressive, Trueheart Duelist has a lot more synergies with discard outlets and such. Protecting both planeswalkers and monarch has proved to be very good. I also like how Duelist pairs well with equipment and vehicles since he has an extra lease on life for only an extra mana. Not sure if he'll last forever, but I'm pretty happy with what Trueheart Duelist can bring to the table.
Duelist has been alright but it's been pretty plain a bit too much. It's a solid option and not horrendous for now, but it'll be my first 2 drop out the first chance I get.
