Kinda anemic in combat, but it can represent a ton of noncombat damage. I mean, a single fetchland activations alone will cost 3+ life, and there are a lot of other random abilities this can hose...
A lot of cube managers were looking for a more unique and interesting option for a red 2-drop ...this may be it.
After briefly looking at the numbers, this might be quite good. It's completely asymmetrical, and hits a surprising number of cards. Including every manland, every equipment card and every fetchland...
Red Hatebears anyone? Seriously though, it may be worth testing instead of one of the many random 3/2 beaters w/drawbacks red seems to get at this cmc.
It seems quite a bit better than some of the random two drops people play. I can't say I'm not a little outraged about a red grizzly bear with upside. And quite the upside indeed.
Went through my cube tutor filter set to "land, creatures, artifacts, with a : (colon) in the text". After weeding out mana abilities and other things this doesn't hit (like certain flipwalkers), this hits 108/540 cards, which is exactly 20% of all cube cards. That's not bad, especially since it hits every fetch / manland. Being able to trigger off of planeswalkers would've been big game. I might have room to test this effect.
I like it. This plus Sulfuric Vortex can be a hell of a clock.
I get similar functionality right now out of Burning-Tree Shaman and he's solid. While this is a lot more fragile, it comes down sooner and does more damage per trigger.
This hits ~45 different permanents in my 360 cube, so I'm not entirely sure it's worth it. But red 2 cmc is such a weak spot in cube that it could be worth the test.
Also anyone else sad this doesn't say enchantment so we could have an Opposition hoser?

My Cubes - The Busted Cube. A fully functional, almost 100% custom cube. The project started out by asking "What if other colors got cards on the power level of Mana Drain,Ancestral Recall, and Time Walk?" Draft and enjoy!
coming down early is great against fetches. i'll have to run the numbers in my cube but this might go in ahead of ash zealot for me. really happy its not a RR cost.
Just noticed this does TWO damage.... Man, this is going to be annoying in multiples in Modern / Legacy!
Indirect damage is always nice in cube, but even with two damage I'm still not sure if it's there. This is one of those effects where you really need to test over theorycrafting.

running the numbers on mine 76/375 are affected which is also 20%! didn't even think about the manlands at first. I really like that the lands make up a large majority of the cards this effects because they have such a high deck inclusion rate.
That's a higher percentage than me. I was 111/700, but I'm not powered, so I'm probably lacking a bunch of the artifact activations present in your cube. Still, I wish it wasn't so specific. If Planeswalkers and enchantments could be hit too like with Burning-Tree Shaman I think it would be easier to overlook the fact that it's a 2/2 for 2cmc.
I think the question will be what's the average amount of damage this guy does per game. I just did the same search on my own CubeTutor and came up with 105/555. That's just under 20% of the cube, but in reality it's likely a lot less than that. Some of these cards probably aren't high candidates for triggering this guy and others, even if they do trigger him, probably means you're in a bad spot with or without the two damage.
I do like that he makes fetch lands cost a whopping three life instead of the bargain priced one. Mother of Runes won't be the complete bane of your mono red existence.
Anyway, for those interested, here are the cards in my 555 that trigger this guy.
Kytheon, Hero of Akros
Mother of Runes
Selfless Spirit
Stoneforge Mystic
Eldrazi Displacer
Mirror Entity
Spear of Heliod
This is exactly the sort of thing I was asking for a few days ago when I wanted more interesting red 2 drops. Naya hatebears, here I come.

I have a hunch that just from the name of this card, WOTC thinks it is wicked good (in general... not necessarily for cube). But even if he just hits 20% of cube cards, that means he pretty much hits something in nearly every deck drafted... after all, cards with good activated abilities tend to be the ones you want in your deck. I mean, just looking at blue creatures, that hits Cryptologist, Jace, Glen Elendra Archmage, Whirler Rogue, Meloku, and Aetherling... all things that ideally you'd want to trigger multiple times in a game (or multiple times in one turn...).
It pings fetching but cards with multiple activations really suck it up. It is going to cost 4 damage to kills this with Ballista or Jitte for example.
What's great about this is the low opportunity cost of trying this out, competition just isn't that deep in red 2s. I'm looking forward to trying this out over one of the generic beaters in that spot.

Seems like a good splashable red 2-drop. Like it. Good at shutting down your opponent value creatures like Eldrazi Displacer, Meloku, Pack Rat, Siege-Gang Commander and Duskwatch Recruiter. Can see the card being good enough in mid-to-large cube lists.

I really like this. I will definitely find room for inclusion. One-sided hate bears are kind of rare and this is above the curve in red as a 2/2 with a positive ability. Red Cleric is weird though.
I think the major upside missing in some of the posts above is that it hits repeated uses, which is much more annoying than a single fetch costing 3 life. In the mid-to-late game this just kills a number of cards from being used at all.
Also, wtwlf, I changed the image to a Curse-hosted one for largely selfish reasons (photobucket is blocked at work), but it may be relevant to others too for similar reasons. Hope you don't mind!
EDIT: For me it hits 101/480 cards. It's worth noting that aside from flipwalkers, it also doesn't hit Bloodsoaked Champion or Scrapheap Scrounger, since you'll be activating those abilities when they're creature cards. Not a large mark against it, but worth noting if you're trying to calculate the hit percentage. For me, this is going to go in over the humdrum Borderland Marauder that's still in my cube.
