Of all the abilities, the only things I care about are Flash and the Fires of Yavimaya effect. It seems like it can set up an incredibly good best case scenario, because it's not just a fires; it's a fires with its own power.
Worst case scenario seems kind of weak, though. If he's attacking alone, the things doublestrike would protect it from are probably dying to nearly any other 5 drop anyway. My RG decks don't really need vigilance? Its low toughness makes it vulnerable to Languish and Wildfire. I have too many ways to kill this way in general, actually.
For a Fires effect I more strongly prefer Sarkhan Vol because he'll survive Wraths and still provide a nice boost to my damage output without putting himself on the line. I also really dig his other abilities.
I also don't like this card as much as Bloodbraid Elf or the rest of what fills my Gruul section. If I opened up another slot, it would probably be on the shortlist though.
The scenarios I think are reasonable:
- Boros aggro finisher
- Gruul Midrange with equipment
- Ramp with big cc creature follow up
- PW killer
- Eureka
This already can fit more decks than other gruul cards. You should want to like it for it's flexibility and decks it supports.

To be fair, this guy will survive wraths in a lot of scenarios. I can see situations where you play this EOT, then you're able to crack back for HUGE amounts of damage depending on what your follow up is. This guy is not great when you don't have that follow up, but you're probably going to put him in decks where you set yourself up for success more often than not. Like, I think this guy would be great with Selvala's Stampede, a card I've really enjoyed.
It sure does look fun. It is reasonably vulnerable for a 5 drop although will nearly always swing once. It is also a nice combat trick, runs offense and defense, and can trade with 6/6 dudes. I like the untap ability and don't think it's irrelevant to the evaluation. I don't think I will run it immediately but if I include Shards in the future I would probably pop this in the Naya slot for a run. I see it being pretty influential. I also wouldn't fault anyone for running it in Gruul since it is perfectly playable there without dedicated access to W.
card played great last night! think this will stick around. Every time it hits the field the opponent has to ask "wait what does this all do again?". if it sticks around and there is a 6 drop it was just devastating everytime. hasty wurmcoil happened a few times during the night.

I used to write for MTGS, including Cranial Insertion and cube articles. Good on you if you can find those after the upgrade.
