Jul 25, 2017Seems legit to me, although I think it would need to say "activated or triggered ability" in the part before the comma. I can't really think of a better way to word the second part. Also, it might need to exclude mana abilities. At least as reminder text.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games

Jul 25, 2017Freeze for Later 2UPosted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
When Freeze for Later enters the battlefield, target creature an opponent controls becomes a colorless artifact with no abilities until Freeze for Later leaves the battlefield.
"He should be quite well preserved. If he survived the freezing process, that is."
I know the quote is "protected" not "preserved", but I am taking creative liberties.

Jul 25, 2017I was totally kidding about the vet thing. I wouldn't be offended even if you called me an outright noob. As I said, I was just trying to lighten the mood.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
On another note, nobody is questioning whether or not necarg is a nice person. I have never had any issues with him personally, and I hope that he continues to participate in the community. I just wouldn't want to compete in an MCC he is running for obvious reasons. If his June disappearance was a one time thing, I certainly wouldn't be calling for a year suspension, but he has now ditched the last two MCCs he has hosted, and has also been consistently late when he is judging in a non-host capacity. Not to mention he never really gives anybody a heads up that he is going to be late or a no-show. Notice that nobody is calling for Tilwin to be suspended, even though he also bailed in June. The difference is, Tilwin has never done this before that I recall, and he also gave everybody a heads up and apologized for having to bail.
Jul 25, 2017Oh. I thought you were referring to you, myself, void_nothing, and bravelion, since kjsharp seems against the suspension idea. Ultimately, I was just trying to lighten the mood. I don't really like talking about suspending somebody, but it seems like an unfortunate necessity.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
Edit: BTW, I've only judged in an MCC once, and have never hosted one.
Jul 25, 2017Am Shegar - It seems like the first two abilities on this would basically cancel each other out, but the last ability could be used as continuous fog if set up correctly. TBH, the first two abilities might actually end up being a net loss more often than not, so the bread and butter of this card definitely seems like it would be the last ability, which would certainly appeal to Johnny.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
JamBlock - Heeeere's Johnny! This is a really interesting and original effect. I cringe a bit at the CMC though, because this seems potentially very powerful. Still, this seems like a very difficult card to pull off. I kinda wish it did something else as well. Maybe stick it onto a beefy Wall with lifelink that causes you to lose life every turn? It just seems very laser focused as is. Some flavor text woulda been nice.
Phyrexian Editor - Well, this certainly is a different take on life gain. I'm not sure the second ability needs to be symmetrical though. For 6 CMC, it could totally be "Target player sacrifices a permanent". Pretty fun card though. I really like the flavor.
ManyCookies - Whoa, this is pretty crazy. I could see this being too powerful. It has the potential to deal a lot of damage pretty quickly, and that's not even taking into consideration the one-sided board wipe aspect of the card. I'm not sure I like the black kicker option. It seems unnecessary.
Mergatroid_Jones - Well this challenge certainly brought out some wild ideas. On its own, this card quickly outpaces your opponent since it puts out a 2/2 flyer for each 1 life your opponent gains. Because of this, the activated ability seems a bit unnecessary, although it would be pretty cool against a lifegain deck.
Luusydh - This is another very interesting card. It would be really fun in a Soul Sisters build if you could get it to go off. This is a hard card to judge power-level-wise. I'd really like to try it out. It seems like one of those cards that does nothing a lot of the time, but is super strong when it works, which is ok.
PanchoPonceN - This card is really weird. So, this basically buys you a turn so that you can board wipe? But only if you're already above 20 life? you better have board wipe, because if you need this apparently your opponent is dealing you more than 20 damage. I feel like I'm missing something with this one.
Forestsguy - This card is overly complicated and very difficult to grok. At least in part because it uses a template I've never seen before. It seems like it would promote game stalls when it got enough counters on it.
Next: the word "become" or "becomes"
Jul 24, 2017I'm relegated to non-vet, "regular participant" status?Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
Jul 24, 2017Holy smokes! I was just suggesting you check out Ormos casually, but thanks for the in-depth analysis. It is much appreciated. I am just now reading this, and will try to respond ASAP. Though I would like to point out that we never really finished designing the mythics, nor did we do any play-testing.Posted in: Custom Set Creation and Discussion
Jul 24, 2017At this point, I don't see why Necarg would even want to volunteer again, but assuming he does, and he is reasonably apologetic about his past infractions, I see no reason he shouldn't be given another chance. That said, I don't think a year suspension from hosting and judging is out of line (actually I'm totally for it). I've been at this MTGS card contest thing for a while now, and I can only think of one other time somebody outright bailed on their hosting duties (I can't remember who, but it was a while back in the CCL). It's not like we're taking his children from him, or suggesting he go to prison. Heck, we're not even suggesting that he be banned from competing. Having repercussions for shirking your responsibilities is how life works, or at least it should be. If I no-call, no-show at my job twice, I would certainly expect there to be some negative repercussions.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games
Jul 23, 2017At this point you would have to be a glutton for punishment to participate in a Necarg hosted or judged MCC. I'm kind of surprised he was allowed to host again after ditching the last time. Even without the new infraction rules, it seems like it should go without saying that if you ditch your responsibility hosting, you shouldn't be allowed to host again. I suppose that's why the infraction rules are necessary.Posted in: Custom Card Contests and Games

No plot, but I would like to revisit Ormos someday. I just bought a new laptop recently, so I'm going to start to look into ways to play custom cards online. Up until recently I had been using my work laptop, which doesn't allow me to download anything. I am not what you would call a computer genius, so it might take me a bit to get it all figured out.Quote from bravelion83 »@ Flatline, was this a plot from you to force me to start rethinking about Ormos again? I've always known we would come back to it eventually, but have we figured out a way to playtest? If I remember well, that was the wall that stopped us, as only you had a way to playtest with friends but had (rightly) real life constraints. By the way, now that they've killed Magic Duels (many thanks Wizards... ), I've started playing XMage and lately I have indeed been thinking about maybe implementing Ormos there to play even just against the AI (better than nothing) if I have the time and will to look through the quite complicated Java source code. Now I lack both of those things, but would it be something potentially useful to do one day?

You may have Identity Usurper enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature on the battlefield, except it has "When this creature enters the battlefield, exile another target creature with the same name as this creature until this creature leaves the battlefield."
