SonofaBith75 posted a message on 2/14 Secret Lairs: Theros StargazingGetting the entire package for $150 seems like a decent deal, works out to $10-$11 per card, depending on your tax. Assuming the stained glass walkers continue, it shouldn’t be hard to make your cost per card come to well less than $10 per card if you’re willing to flip those.Posted in: The Rumor Mill -

Carthage posted a message on Sheldon's Thoughts on infinite combosPosted in: Commander (EDH)Quote from Xcric »combo isn't inherently bad. games have to end. there's no difference between killing a pod with infinite combo x instead of just hoofing out, or shared animosity tokens zerg rush, or voltron bull*****, either way someone or everyone dies.
i've also long argued that embracing it makes for a more interactive game. if you know everyone is combo'ing off you're going to run more ways to stop those and if you're doing it yourself you're going to run more ways to protect your own. interactivity increases. it goes from being a 20 hour long pod where everyone lines up craw wurms like gentlemen to an actual game.
sheldon's views on commander... i've never agreed with them. he takes an approach that's very much do nothing. he's against just about everything that isn't just dudes lining up. its a very boring non-interactive way to play. that's his thing though, kitchen tables where nothing happens and eventually 90/90 hydra of bull***** gains trample and doesn't eat a doom blade.
its a totally different way to play, but its also baby's first edh game and that doesn't last very long. the natural progression of any group is to move toward winning. interacting with each other more. the very nature of the game and playing with the same people over a long period of times makes it an arms race. its not just an edh thing. even that 60 card casual group in college is going to find ways to beat that guy next week, or steve will get a new dragon for his dragons deck.
lean into it. stop fighting it.
edit: and yeah, you're gonna have a real bad time if you take his approach to edh and run into people who don't.
There is absolutely a difference in how you win.
If you win through resource denial, the game can drag on and get really boring
If you win through suddenly resolving a single spell that doesn't care about the game up to that point, it doesn't create a satisfying conclusion
If you win through building up a strong board position and killing everyone with it, that's what a lot of casual players would be more ok with
etc
The conclusion to the game is like a story, there can be good ways to end a story and bad ways to end a story.
And I find that when everyone is trying to combo off, the game becomes, well, just not a fun game to play. Boy I sure did love that game where my opponent spent 30 minutes digging through their deck with the paradox engine I tried to counter! You played broken mana rocks and cast godo on turn 3 and no one had a free counter to stop it, what a great game we are playing! Ad nauseum after the table spent their resources stopping the previous player from trying to win that turn? Why yes I do think that's fair to draw 30 cards for 5 mana at instant speed and then use those cards to end the game immediately. -

Weebo posted a message on [Offtopic] Community ThreadA couple months later, all of the color work on my new tattoo is done. The artist is super good with color and I'm super white, so it's a good combo. One image in the spoiler, a couple others and a video (because it wraps around my leg) on the artist's instagram. All of the grey in the background is fresh, so it will fade a little over time/once my leg isn't red.Posted in: Commander (EDH) -

bondafong posted a message on Card Æsthetics Evaluation ThreadPosted in: The Cube ForumQuote from Cythare »At the risk of starting a hot-button topic, I've started the process of removing Terese Nielsen arts from my cube, of which there were 9. Some don't really have multiple other options, but I figured I'd check for others' opinions on choices (even if they may not align with my preferences/what I've already purchased).
Ugh. A little late to the party here. I didn't know any of this until i read this post.
I will not remove already existing art in my cube. But even though I like Therese Nielsens art, I will definitely think about it in the future if I have options to add other art. I will just vote with my own wallet and support other artists instead. I won't own any play mat with her art. I won't own any prints, etc. It probably won't make a difference, but whatever little helps. -

Yeah. Let's get some perspective. WotC waaaaay overestimates the value of surprise in building up excitement. Keeping things in the dark and then revealing in a calculated manner may not have zero utility, but it's hardly a huge factor.
How about...a Standard that doesn't suck? That would go much further than ersatz tension-buildup in generating authentic excitement. -

Sparki posted a message on [Offtopic] Community ThreadPosted in: The Cube ForumQuote from Pringlesman »Latley I've been getting back into doing alters. I've been doing some alters for UW miracles (top two rows) and some commissions for some friends.
My LGS is a huge Aquaman fan (someone has to be I guess) and he plays merfolk in modern. Another person has a Holy Grail themed Commander deck so his Trinket Mage fetching a holy hand grendae of agranok seemed appropriate. And who doesn't want a Van Gogh Ponder?
Oh man, I've seen the Trinket mage + matching ratchet bomb. You did those? Those are sweet!
I have to get you to commission me something for my cube sometime. -

steve_man posted a message on The Process of Transitioning to an Archetype-Focused CubeYou generally want most of your cards to be good value on their own, and great when it has optimal support. For example, Animate Dead can just be a good value spell on its own and absolutely busted when built around, where Purphoros isn't something I'd play outside of a dedicated token deck, but he's there soley for the token deck. Purphoros-type cards are great to have, but keep them far and few between.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
Cross pollination is extremely important. Again, using Animate Dead as an example: this card is not only good with your own discard outlets, but can also work well with over great spells like Thoughteize / Despise. Another examplple are Upheaval / Wildfire. Both archetypes highly value mana rocks and Rampant Growth effects, but Wildfire doesn't want mana elves where Upheaval does. Mana elves play an important role in all sorts of archtypes: they play well in any ramp / Upheaval deck, provide mana / fodder for Recurring Nightmare decks, and go well in tokens because they help you go wide with token generators and anthem effects. -

I think even if your dragon count is higher, this is still better. A white based agro deck is more likely to have other knights in your own deck. Thus you will see the interaction more often than an opponent playing a dragon.

The discussion on this card is really less of a discussion on Nature's Chant and more of a discussion of the future of hybrid.
I disagree with your reasoning on C.
I disagree that a cube would be better if (in a perfect universe) we ran only hybrid cards and no traditional multicolored gold spells. It's like saying that cube would be better if instead of having colored mana everything was colorless. Gold cards give players a reward for going down into multiple colors and allow us to have more powerful spells at their CMC. This is a net benefit to the diversity of the game.

Imposter of the Sixth Pride. Unless you are a triblal cube I can't see Changling being enough to get me to play a Blade of the Sixth Pride. Cool flavor text though.
Sisay, Weatherlight Captain I can't see a white deck wanting this. You have to have a real weird legendary cube to want this.
Pndering Mage: I don't run Kavu Climber and blue alreday has a 5 drop creature that draws cards. And this is no Mulldrifter.
Changling Outcast: See comments about Imposter.
Undead Augur: Cool if you support the Pox deck.
Planebound Accomplice: Planeswalkers strength is from getting incremental advantage. This doesn't do that.
Ravenous Giant: Peasent cubes might play this. Cool card. I didn't even notice it until you pointed it out.
Scrapyard Recombiner: I only run 4 constructs in my cube. I wish there were more playable artifact creatures in general.
