I think this card would be good only if you run a 360 or less cube that support A LOT cheating strategies. Otherwise, he is just a 2/2 flash bear that didn't help aggro deck or any other shell either.
I just can't figure it out how this card could be maindeck so often and I think it is restricted to sideboard only. I kind of like the interaction with O-Ring, Parralax Wave, Flickerwisp and stuff but it's not enough to make it a good cube card. All those cards are already great without it and Containment Priest is just so bad without them.
Otherwise, Black has some nice combo outlet as well. I like playing Storm, Reanimator or Stax in this color! Yawgmoth's Will, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Tendrils of Agony, Necropotence, Recurring Nightmare, Bitterblossom or even Ophiomancer are high on my pick list. Stuff like Nether Void are also pretty good to lock the board when you're already ahead.
Just get played yesterday by one of my player and the guy was pretty high on it during deckbuilding.
He was playing Boros Burn/Aggro and had Skullclamp and 2 Pro-Swords along it. Seems pretty nice on paper but never really succed to connect it though. Some missplay made him force to send it hastely to a chump block before having the Skullclamp, but overrall, card looked great when played well. The guy was also having Purphoros and Faithless Loothing to give some exra value to the elemental.
Overall, I think it's a card to can sometimes trap your group of player, that aren't playing very often, to play bad magic. While it looks like a very simple card, you have to think smart before casting it with those kind of tool in your deck. It is not always a good turn 2. A empty board favored him for sure.
Have you guys tested this card? How does it work in practice in cube? Getting extra cards and life in black seems just fine! Plus this color is well positionned to sacrifice a recurring creature like Bloodgast or Gravecrawler.
I'm redefining my black 4-drop section and this dude has come to my mind.
I'm considering adding it for an big cube event soon. Seems good for control deck or aggro deck that use either anthem or planeswalkers. But before conforming my move, I wan't to make sure he's fine and avoid mistake. How does the Mentor is doing for you guys so far?
My actual cut for him would be Silverblade Paladin? Is Mentor better in your opinion?
I might also cut Hokori, Dust Drinker, but I rather cut a 3-drop because I don't want that section going below 6.
I think he is one of the best green 1-drop point. If not, he is so close to be.
Just tested it yesterday in the new MTGO Legacy Cube and he was insanely good. Turn 1, he was always relevant and forcing opponent to answer it quick. Swing life and trade with a lot of stuff turn 1 to 4. Late game he was good as well. Gettin bigger and bigger while having Lifelink and Trample is crazy. In aggro shell, he is certainly good because he hits fast and hard, but even in a midrange-ramp shell like the one I was having yesterday, he is more than valuable! In those type of deck, you are very well positionned to pay multiple times for his ability.
He's like a green IMPROVE version of Figure of Destiny.
Vorapede only downside is its CMC. Triple green is often though to cast early and doesn't fit in any other deck shell than ramp.
Other than that, he is fine. He survives to most removal (except white ones) and wraths effect. Otherwise, I like the wolf more because he fits in another kind of deck. The 5-drop green section is already filled up with a lot of midrange/control fatties and I think it deserves a more aggro oriented one. Wolfir Silverheart fit well in that role. He swing a lot a damage ETB and makes your evasive early treat become a must-anwser-now problem. Plus, like mention by Lucid, he is the highest damage dealer among them all. Also the quickest to deal it.
I like Genesis for the repeatedly value he brings, but Wolfir Silverheart is way above him in my opinion. He's great in a aggro deck where you can combine the P/T boost he brings to a evasive treat like one of the Soltari dudes or a Flying/Intimidate creature. However, my cube does have space for both, so I don't have to be asking myself this though question
I'm redefining my GW section right now and I'm was wondering the addition of this card. What do you guys think about it? Where does it stand in your evaluation of the GW section? I know there's a ton of options there, but in a cube where there's 5 spot available at GW, do you think one could be deserve to this card? Where does it stand compare to bottom cards like Sigarda, Host of Herons or Knight of Reliquary in your opinion?
Whit the recent print of Narset Transcendent, I'm not sure how to classify all of them. While note pretty sure on the order, first 4 are kind of clear, but after this, I'm a bit confuse. If we consider Celestial Colonnade only as a land, it may looks like this :
1. Venser, the Sojourner
2. Geist of Saint Traft
3. Detention Sphere
4. Supreme Verdict
5. A choice between those 3
a) Sphinx's Revelation
b) Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
c) Narset Transcendent
For now, I'm having Sphinx's Revelation but I'm welling to test Narset Transcendent. In fact, I think it could be as good or even better. Both are kind of restricted to control deck, making them easy to compare, but at least, Narset could be cast early and have a quicker impact on the game. Sphinx's Revelation needs a lot of mana to be worth it, like 6 and more, and sometime you just feels like you're casting a mana restricted Stroke of Genius. To be as good as it was in Standard, I feel like you need to play some kind of bant deck with a lot of accels. Without it, in a fast power cube, Sphinx isn't having that much of a impact.
Don't force yourself into a cycle. Just use the best lands for each color combination after you include all the full cycles that are worth playing.
Yeah you're right. Not all the guilds good benefit the same wayf from each land cycle. Considering that my 4th spot is taken by Man Lands (- Stirring Wildwood ; + Horizon Canopy) and Enemy Pain Lands, I was thinking that maybe, at the 5th spot, some midrange guilds could deserve the Filter Lands instead of the Check Lands. So I could be trying something like this :
Other lands at the 4th spot would still be Check Lands (- Sunpetal Grove ; + Stirring Wildwood), except maybe for Clifftop Retreat that could be also swap for the Filter's one. Some WW and RR cost could sometimes be painful to cast early.
Would you make a move like that? And what about Rugged Prairie for Clifftop Retreat?
And sorry for the fact that I'm talking about a subject that have already been speak of in other threads in the past, but my 1st research about Filter Lands ended up empty. I should have search for Land Cycle or Dual Land.
If supporting aggressive decks is on your agenda, I'd play the Darkslick Shores cycle. I hope they print enemy lands for that cycle.
I'm welling to support aggressive deck but I don't want to penalise other archetype. Darkslick Shores for example is important in a lot of archetype that could last longer and the fact that those lands enter the battlefield tapped hurts them. But in counterpart, Storm could afford to use it without drawback because it is a quick combo archetype.
In fact, I used to have the Scars of Mirrodin cycle in my cube for the aggressive guilds only (GW, RG and BR) before I decided to include the Ally Check Lands. I find them more useful in any kind of situation. Good in early or late game and in aggro or control shell. While not that much of a deal for Blackcleave Cliffs, Razorverge Thicket and Copperline Gorge also used to hurt decks that want to use Wildfire and Devastation as a wincon when following a Planeswalker.
For the floaing mana drawback on the Filter cycle, I haven't think about it. Pretty much the big deal when talking about disadvantage... This add the possibility to affect pretty bad your turn 2.
Right now, my 600 cards cube contains 5 lands of each guild and if I had to class them, I'd go with something like that :
Fetch Land » Dual Lands » Shock Lands » Man Lands (Ally) or Pain Lands (Ennemy) » Check Lands (Horizon Canopy for GW)
The last one, the Check Lands, are good but I was wondering if the Filter Lands could be better. Cannot be your 1st land in play but is certainly having some kind of upside, while being able to make all your CC easier to cast. Horizon Canpy will stay, but for the 9 other, it is a legitime question. I'm personnally tempting by the Filter's one, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something about it.
So is Mystic Gate better than Glacial Fortress, and samething for its pairs?
I ran Kargan Dragonlord for ages, but Eidolon of the Great Revel has been a much better card here. Dealing so much damage, even symmetrically, does a lot to accelerate aggro's game plan. Dragonlord was only OK even when my cube was slower. EotGR is one of only a very small number of CC creatures I run now.
I'm also pretty high on Eidolon of the Greal Revel. He provides a pretty quick clock in a shell where you're opponent is more likely to have less life than you. Burn and Aggro decks will love it for long IMO. In those kind of situations, he has been great for us so far. Other than that, he won't have that much of a impact, but it is the same for many other 2cc drops.
On the other hand, I'm also a bit curious about wtwlf123's new favorite 2 drops!

3 P/T for 3 split into 3 flying bodies in quite useful and though to answer! Nice with anthems, guys like Hero of Bladehold and stuff as well!
