A New and Exciting Beginning

The End of an Era

Good afternoon all. I am somewhat new to building a cube, and I am looking to take it to the next level.

I have two cubes, one 540 card ISD and my now 360, soon to be 540, cube known as Fisticuffs.

With Fisticuffs, I am starting to build out archetypes, but am getting stuck in the mud to implementing them and keeping an equal power level. Nothing is set in stone yet, but here is what I want to build to, subject to change:

    UW/ bllink
    UR/ spellslinger
    UG/ open
    UB/ open
    RW/ aggro / +1/+1
RG/ Big mana / maybe landfall
    GB/ Reanimator
    GW/ tokens
    BW/ lifegain
    BR/ Sacrifice

After some thought, I do want to support Stax. Reanimator is a for sure, same for blink, lifegain, +1/+1 and tokens. As a player, I do not have a great deal of experience with BR, UG or UB so building an archetype for them is difficult. UB could be mill, but that can be all or nothing, not very flexible.

The goal of this cube is not to be a noob cube, but one where the power is up there. I also want to have a good deal of cross pollination between the colors and essentially have all the cards work wards the archetypes. I know there are a good deal of good blue cards that will work within Reanimator.

What is a good way to verify all archetypes are equally supported and the power level is even for all? Any thoughts for the "open categories?

    Good afternoon group,

I finally was able to drum up enough interest to run a cube group at home. Is there software that will help keep track of placements? I haven't run anything like this before and I am not aware of what is out there or what's available.

If it makes any difference, this will be for Mac.

    TheGroglord, Awesome link!

With a bit more thought, I do like the idea of keeping the cards to a lower budget and want to lean to some of the lesser known, less played cards to keep things fun and interesting. There will be a few anchor cards for archetypes and other build around me cards. Essentially, the cube will be dubbed "B-list."

FoG, I did think about double sleeving, but I really don't like the bulk that it adds. Sleeve quality was not skimped on as all the cubes are Dragon Shields, and I really don't want to sleeve up 3 cubes.

The only decks "EDH" ddbl sleeved are my Meren of clan Nel Toth and Capt'n Sissay due to total card value.

I should of been stated that the actual dollar limit posted was spit balled. More than anything, the goal of the cube is just to be enjoyed by all and if a card in the process gets damaged, I want it to be cheap to replace. Also, low dollar cards lessen the possibility of theft when its played outside of my trusted groups.

    Hello all,

I am relatively new to cube as I was a modern player and active in EDH. I sold my modern decks and turned those into Draft simulators for DOM "minus planeswalkers" and ISD "minus Lili, Snappy, and Olivia". The reason for quitting Modern was finical burnout. Same went for my Teferi Cedh deck; sold the high dollar cards and got a PS4 instead.

My cube currently is pretty close to one of the Card Kingdom beginner cube lists, V4 if i remember correctly. Now that I have been looking into archetypes, and how cards cross pollinate between them got me thinking on how I can upgrade my cube.

The goal for this cube is not necessarily to run the best cards, expensive cards "modern burnout & don't want to repeat that here," just fun cards. I was wondering on what the groups thought was on a price cap per card for most situations. What I had in mind was a cap at 1.50, 2.00 per card and not have every card hit that limit. If the card exceeds that and is critical for the archetype, that's fine within reason. I know proxys "homemade" are always an option but original is preferred.

AS of now the only cards that are above that limit are the pain lands "Ice Age art" and Scry lands.

Any thoughts on a price cap for the bulk of the cards?

I got my remaining needed cards this Saturday, and this is where my build sits at the moment. The sideboard is still being worked on.

    Good morning fellow cardboard junkies,

I apologize if this topic has been beaten like a dead horse, but this is my first time encountering this issue. To start off, my only focus in MTG is Modern and EDH. I have been playing for about 6 months now and my collection has hit over 4k cards total, and I want to thin out the jank. Since starting Modern, my card collecting attitude has changed 180 Deg; 90% of the cards I own have been pulls, other 10% purchased and now I am in the mindset of buy what I need.

As of now, I have 4 EDH decks that I care about "Omnath, locus of rage, an early Karlov build, Meren, Clan of Nel Toth, and my Ur dragon "on hold for its need a better land base". My Modern deck is my Golgari CoCo Elves.

For starters, any C/U cards that I have more then a playset of, into the bulk sell box it goes, same goes for all vanilla cards. What is a good way to determine what cards are jank an not? About two months ago, I have discovered Metamox, and they give cards a rating of Chase, Money, and Jank. What I don't know is how accurate their ratings are. Any advice/tips is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: My end goal is to create a toolbox that will work within both formats, tailored for modern and EDH staples.

    Hello group,

I have been an observer of modern for the past several months, and this week I finally made my way into the format, took a deep breath and just jumped right in. The Golgari CoCo Elves deck is my starting point.

While I am running this deck, and after I build my sideboard, I want to starting in the famous...Infamous... shock and fetch lands. The shocks I have so far are (2) overgrown tombs, (1) steam vent and (1) blood crypt. My question is, When building up my land base, is it smarter to start with pairs of each? I don't know enough about the general landbase throughout the decks. At lest for now, the decks I run in EDH are pretty heavy in BRG, mainly Gruul and Golgari, and that is my comfort level at the moment. I have been experimenting a bit more in Orzhov.

After doing some more homework on what deck I want to play, I have decided to start my modern adventure with the coco elves deck. Start monogreen and tune from there with adventuring into another secondary colorset.

Bluetron, I'm quite familiar with the professor as I have watched many of his review, and even some of his lore videos. I was not aware that he did Modern videos and low and behold, he has a video on an elves deck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIQXfZiYJzE

The elves deck is a strong possibility for me. I have not played mono green before as a tend to lean towards black as a primary choice, but green has been one I have intent to learn. Blue tends to be a bit tough for me.

Yup. Shocklands and other fastlands are on my to buy list as they would also be useful in my EDH decks.

I was just listening to Modern Masters and they were talking about the Affinity build. I will look more into it. Elf tribal also sounds like fun. A tribal deck for sure is something that I am interested in too. It also helps that I pulled a Cavern of Souls yesterday too. Not just for modern but EDH '17 decks. Got my eye on the dragon tribal deck.

Good morning group. This weekend I decided to start honing in my focus to two formats, EDH for Casual and Modern. I have zero interest in standard for the simple fact that cards rotate out. Although I am still quite wet behind the ears in the world of MTG, I want to have long term goals and that is competition.

The reason for EDH and Modern is I like the fact that I have a wide variety of cards to choose from and not worry about those cards rotating out with the exception of banned cards. I am very aware that Modern will have a higher upfront cost compared to standard, but I would rather invest $$$ into eternal and know my investment will be playable 2 years from now. My goal is to start with a basic version of decks that can be powered up to competitive levels. As I am still learning what my play style is, I would like to start with budget decks, roughly within the 100 rage. From what I have played sofar, I do like token and agro style decks. I purchased my ydris and Mizzix deck to learn more about the spell side of the game.

Looking into the skeleton of the format, I am confused to what makes a Tier_ deck a Tier_ deck. Also, what would be some good "non burn" decks that would be a good starting point to look at, well, their non-tuned versions.

When it comes to the competitive level, do the players stick with known decks "soul sisters, WB tokens..etc..." or is it more fluid in builds.

    Thanks in advance.

    Good morning group,

I want to venture into the trading aspect of MTG, and my LGS does not have a large trading group outside of FNM and friday's are no good for me as it alternates for a Friday with the wife and hosing game night "Pathfinder/D&D." My LGS hosts EDH on saturday and drafts on tues/wed shop depending.

For trading stock, they are mostly low value bulk cards from drafts, booster packs, duel deck "not doing that again..." etc. I came across Pucatrade as I like the idea of trading off my low value cards to gain points for higher/needed cards for builds.

I am starting to dip my toe, but am unsure of what to expect or even if Puca is worth it.

The general feeling I get at my LGS is more of a friendly environment than one that is more fun then competitive. We had one player who went the infinite combo route, but the other games have been more low key.

This deck is not intended for a 1v1 EDH. I didn't know there was a difference for a multiplayer EDH deck compared to one for 1v1.
