From personal experience when I started playing about 5 years ago, Modern was the format that I learned with. In Modern, the decks are not capable of winning nearly as fast as Legacy decks so it gives the opponent time to play the game. As far as decks go, mono-green Stompy in my opinion would be the best way to start out because it is a relatively cheap deck that teaches the importance of casting instant speed spells at the right time and also has enough power and speed to be competitive.

Hope this helps!
