The End of an Era

Well I had a phenomenal FNM today. Played pretty solid and had some luck on my side...no complaints. Here's my list. Processor Foundrazi:

    r1: uw control
both of these games were very long and grindy obviously. I don't remember much of what happened besides g1 i played tez and managed to get into the combo and then was able to untap, make a bunch of dudes and immediately ult tez for a win with him at full life. g2 I got totally buried by chained ancestral visions. g3 I won by t2 spellskite, t3 smasher, t4 smasher, t5 smasher.
    1-0

    r2: jund
both games were super quick and EEEASSSYYY. game 1 literally only eldrazi. my dudes were much bigger and with 3 paths, was no problem. I did play a citadel and hoped he just thought it was for colorless. g2 my plan worked and he boarded a lot of his artifact hate and cheap removal. I fetched all basics as I had a feeling something was up (had a fulminator mage) and then played early eldrazi and managed to flip reshaper t3 into the sword and then next turn untap into the foundry. He had no way to stop and won a couple turns later.
    2-0

    r3: jeskai nahiri control
these were tough games. game 1 I had a pretty big mistake which lost me the game. I didnt tap right and forgot to leave open a white for path. in doing so I screwed up the rest and tapped out when I should have been playing a little more defensive. I got super punished. blech. g2 he plays early stony silence but who gives a crap and ended up killing him with tezz 5/5s and eldrazi. I got to wasteland strangler his suspended ancenstral visions. felt so awesome. Had a clutch celestial purge to kill nahiri and done. g3 I got kinda lucky he drew poorly and I didn't lol. I out advantaged him pretty easily and the huge dudes got there. Clique and man lands were great in the match.
    3-0

    r4: naya zoo
This match was vs one of my friends who has been destroying people left and right with this deck. Seriously he's 27-1 with the deck. He 4-0 basically every fnm he plays in. Anyways. He keeps a greedy 1 lander. I t2 TKS him and see it's insane...if I remember it was like goyf, goyf, bushwhacker, burningtree shaman, something else and a vexing devil. I took the shaman. Weeeelll he doesn't draw his 1 land until way too late and I've already killed him with paths, stranglers and smashers. g2 he starts kind of slow and I manage to cobble the thopter combo with 1 life left, wow. He drew a LOT of lands. I manage to scrape back to 8 life before he finds an answer couple turns later (scavenging ooze) If he drew like a bolt or a stony silence I was so done for. I had a lot of artifacts out that game. Tez turning guys into 5/5 ended up fishing him off. Raid boss down!
    4-0

    Thoughts:
The mana is tough sometimes. I've tried to keep it to no double casting costs but sometimes I need like a black or a white randomly at times. It never cost me the game but I missed some opportunities that should have been free. Not sure if there's much I can do to fix that. Basically running 4 colors that's going to happen. Thankfully I have been goldfishing the hell out of it and that super paid off with proper sequencing. Smasher is still EASY MVP. That card has a far higher win percentage than I do. The combo and tez also felt great. It gives me reach the eldrazi don't. Also, if most decks can stop the ground guys they can't stop the flyers. Plus the lifegain is not irrelevant. With 8 cantrips, 2 tez and the occasional reshaper flip, it's not usually too hard to find. The deck played well as this was my first time running it in a tourney. I faced all real players today and all of them have a lot of experience playing their decks, I got no free wins due to player skill. I love how many answers it has in the main for a variety of different decks. I wish I was able to have main deck discard but can't have everything.

Not sure what you are talking about. They announced a while ago there would be no more modern PTs then they had what 2 more before it got axed again? Also, cutting plat players stipends and then immediately not cutting them (at least for now).

However wrong I am, this topic is irrelevant to the to this thread. We can debate via PM if you want Smile

The last pro tour announcement is an example although they are less do one thing and say another admittedly and more say one thing then change their minds

well they say one thing and do another so i'm always skeptical

I don't think strix is too strong for either format, possibly standard. I think it would actually be decent for modern. With how aggressive and linear most decks are this would help decks that struggle vs them. That being said, I can't see it being printed anytime soon Frown This is completely moot but I wish they would print cards legal for modern that don't go through standard. That thinking has no relevance on how good or bad cards will be. Think delve cards, eldrazis, etc. Then the cards that would be great in modern that aren't in it like Titania, containment priest, mystic confluence, basically any of the new cards from the commander sets, etc. that should be.

@Raystack I'm currently testing my foundrazi v3. On a random note, you mentioned reshaper cant get through 4 toughness guys...just equip a sword to him, it's not just for 1/1s Smile (still not great but sometimes it's all you need) also making a 6/8 trampling monstrosity is relevant.

I have been currently goldfishing this spicy number after seeing some other ideas. The mana needs work admittedly so it may not work but does help to shore up the aggro matchups. No land destruction also hurts. It in no way helps the awful tron matchup but there's only so much you can do against that deck with tez style deck anyways so why bother.

I would hardly consider 4 temples mana rocks as they only help 4 cards. It actually seems not great. It's like trying to assemble a 2 card combo. Most of the time it's going to be a terrible colorless land. Why did you drop the smashers? Reality Smasher has been insane for me. You know what else works well with temple and does a pseudo(sometimes better) trinket mage? Matter reshaper. I understand you want to play different set of cards which is totally fine but I'm not too high on trinket mage. Perhaps given metas it's the right choice but I feel thirst/serum would be better.

my reasoning: You get a crap creature on turn 3 with an artifact that will, presumably, be useful to play the next turn. This is giving opponents information which may or may not be useful. If you get removal they probably won't commit to the board for instance. Sometimes you get a crap creature turn 6 that will get a extremely variable artifact.

I only used the card quite a while ago and it was rarely amazing. It's possible things have changed but that seems unlikely. Please prove me wrong! I would love to give the guy a shot again

What's with oboro? Seems so random...is it for randomly getting under your bridge? My only real critique would be that I personally would like to see another green producing land or green source in general. I'm sure it's fine in 95% of games. But that card begs to be played early and I feel sometimes it could be dead.

kaladesh already has 4 very playable cards released (5 if you count one of the chandras). I have high hopes we will see at least 1 playable card. I'm sure there will be something like a 2 mana 1/1 that comes with a thopter. I'm just praying for strix but I know it won't happen

thanks for your thoughts. We are certainly on the same page. I'll address some points. First, 15 artifacts is too low can't argue but I built it to be compact and consistent g1. I didn't add some of the silver bullets as I don't care about them game 1. As for tez he whiffs a lot but I think about it this way. Tez has 2 functions: make 5/5s and search for combo. That's it. I've never had a problem finding an artifact to make a dude. I have 7 must find artifacts and that's only after I can stabilize to find them. Sure I don't always get full value but he scrys 5. That's 5 cards that aren't helping me. I wish I could run more combo. I wasn't happy with the 3/2 split. Would muddle the mixture be better then tez? Maybe? So far, I've never been sad to have him and I feel bad cutting him to 2 even with a low artifact total. He wins games and I have a huge man crush on him. I do think finding a place for a spellskite main could be hugely beneficial. What to cut though...

As for the discard and sweepers I agree on the discard I would love to get another in there or another cheap removal. The only new sweeper is the 1 drown main. I replaced a Liliana for it. Still debating running 2 flaying tendrils instead of the 1/1 split. I think it's fine for now. The damnation have always been there and certainly are there to stay.

This deck is great merely for the fact people have trouble boarding against it. It's a, oh you're playing that deck, then I kill them with something seemingly random. It's great fun Smile

I'm interested in trying a clique. I forgot about that card. Have to see how my mana holds up to double blue. It's built closer to handle double black. Card seems great especially with tks

@radouf I'm one of the few I think who actually doesn't really like thirst. People at my lgs make fun of me all the time but the card has been exceeding mediocre to poor consistently. I feel like tis good against the matches you are already good at.

Well I had a poor FNM with my foundrazi list. And by poor I mean I played like garbage. That being said, I went 3-1 but I didn't deserve it. I didn't feel good about doing it either...

    r1 kiki chord 0-1
g1 and g2 destroyed him with t3 smasher into t4 smasher into thought-knot. then got killed by him g2 as I couldn't find anything relavant and didn't do much. g3 was the real kicker. One of my biggest mistakes. I didn't board in leylines which was probably fine but I got hit with 3 back to back voice of resurgence with a spellskite backup. I didn't do a whole lot for a bunch of turns and fell farther and farther behind, didn't draw any threats at all. When it came time to it I sacked my talisman to my foundry cutting myself off black mana I needed to damnation to survive. soooooo dumb I don't know why I did that. Would I have won? I know I could have stabilized. If my draws were decent probably.

    r2 jund 1-1
both games were very easy slaughters. some eldrazi to distract him while I keep clearing his creatures. I land the combo and he doesn't find any removal. The thopters take me there both games. Both games were pretty similar. I feel like i got a little lucky as he has a ton of removal for the combo but he didn't draw any when he needed it (discard early, tks mid)...sadly I know that feeling.

    r3 mono green stompy 2-1
these games very similar to the jund round. he drew sub optimally, a damnation cleared his board and thopter combo destroyed him with tez back up. match was over very quickly.

r4 mono green combo (primal command with witness) 3-1
these games were brutal. g1 eldrazi destroyed him very very easily. He just durdled. g2 I got destroyed by prime time and huge mana into craterhoof. Here I had the chance to damnation his board with a ton of mana dorks and I didn't and got punished sooo hard as he just went right into craterhoof with me having lethal on board. ugh, I won't make that mistake again. he had to leave and conceded to me. I feel pretty confidant in the match up tho. I have a lot of wipes and while he does have huge bombs, so do I. With the misplays I felt like I should have lost but who knows.

thoughts having played the deck for a while:
I want 4 reality smasher. That card is so stupidly awesome. like insane. Don't know what to cut for him though. I hate to say it but maybe a tezz... I could see the Liliana but she's been so good to me. Blech I just don't know. Thought-knot has been fine, the disruption is nice but I find a lot of times opponent is hellbent. I can't cut them though. I still love matter reshaper, especially with scry being able to stack it is so nice and sometimes it works perfectly for you. Sometimes he ramps, sometimes he straight gives you want you want (combo piece). There's a lot of hits off that guy which is another reason I like Liliana for the random off chance he flips her. I need some land destruction. I think I may cut sea gate for something like a tec edge. If I cut a tez I might cut a citadel for a second. Most of the games I lose is due to a utility land like gavony or wolfrun. maybe it's just luck but seems to be happening more frequently. I really hate losing a tez and citadels. making 5/5s and searching for combo has been necessary although I seem to always cut a tez for sb cards.

speaking of SB, I need to rework. wurmcoil has been dead for me every time. I think It's getting the cut. I'll try a batterskull. 1 turn makes a huge difference and I want some more lifegain. I may also try a phyrexian metamorph I love that card and it sees 0 play. this seems like a good shell for him. I also never caster chalice and rarely boarded it. I think I may put in a shadow of doubt. I feel like I have to keep spellskite but I haven't boarded him in in probably 2 fnms now.

@raystack I was referring to it as foundrazi, but I'm playing 4/3 split and I guess it doesn't matter anyways. I'm surprised you found reshaper to be underwhelming, it's always been good for me. Trades with most things, and draws you a card or ramps you or gives you a free combo piece. Of course this is unlikely with only 5 combo pieces. Not being able to run flaying is certainly a thing but I still think it's fine to run with reshaper. If you need to use it, losing 1 guy is more than worth it (sometimes a sword will save him but I've yet to equip him, that's usually tks or smasher that gets the nice things). I've been using drown in sorrow as my meta doesn't have much Abzan coco. If I were to to a larger event I would play tendrils over drown. Really wish black had a 3 mana 3 damage wipe.

some reasoning for my list. 15 artifacts is definitely too low and I do whiff ALOT, however I'm only ever looking for 2 artifacts aka the combo if I'm plussing him (or SB cards). Tezz plus 1 is usually a scry 5 and if I am plussing I don't really care about anything else I would be drawing. Tezz is mainly there for beatdown but sometimes I need to find the combo OR ultimate (which I rarely do honestly but does come up every now and then). Plus people usually believe I have a lot of artifacts if I throw him out and will always attack him.

Anything to get people to play reality smasher. that card is stupidly good

I don't get where all this double cards are hard to cast is coming from. Pre-unban I played bug tez for a while and never had trouble casting damnation. Every now and then Liliana was but if you fetch knowing you have those cards and play 4-5 rocks you won't have a problem. Problems come from things like blood moon. You just have to fetch for the future turns and not always what you have currently in your hand. It's not always perfect but to completely cut things is only doing yourself a disservice. A splash should be just that, a splash.

unless I'm missing something a lot of lists haven't dropped Liliana. I certainly haven't and never will. She's awesome and will always be awesome. She's not a 4 of awesome however.

small Monday tournament report. I won with a solid 3-0. My tezz foundrazi deck is listed a page back, I didn't change anything. I can also post it again if anyone cares to see.

    r1: jund 2-1
g1: not a hard game 1. Matter reshaper t2 which traded with a bob to flip sword of the meek. t3 played foundry. He killed it. Long story short I drew 4 foundries and won with the 4rth lol.
g2: I got absolutely crushed but K command and just all the perfect removal.
g3: I drew mostly eldrazi here and after a t1 inquisition noticed he was holding a lot of artifact removal. Fine with me Smile I played some TKS and a smasher and went to town. t5 tez to animate a citadel and that won me.

    r2: infect 2-0
g1: I feel like both these games I got kinda lucky. This game I didn't do a whole lot and thought I was easily dead but t3 damnation with me at 6 poison. he hits me up to 8 poison with inkmoth but I rip a foundry which lets me hold him off for a couple turns will I was able to land 2 smashers and kill him.
g2: he hits me for 5 with a groundswell noble hierarch. He goes to do it again on his t3 but played talisman and slaughter pact. boom. He doesn't do a whole lot from herea very very timely pithing needle to knock out his inkmoth clears the way. Tez 5/5 with a couple eldrazi and it was done.

r3: UR thing in the ice 2-0
g1: was a weird game. he suspends visions and then a t2 thing in the ice. I play an early reality smasher and that pretty much takes me there. After he flips thing I just play around the counters and slowly replay my stuff. Eventually a tezzeret animating citadel stops the flipped thing. At this point he's at 2 so swung with a couple of dudes and it was over.
g2: he plays t2 thing and I kinda figured something was up with how he fetched so managed to get a swamp and play t2 foundry over the sword. turns out, t3 blood moon which was fine. played sword and literally didn't cast another card and rode it to victory. Very glad he didn't see any SB cards. I couldn't do much till like t6 when I drew a talisman so if I were under pressure and was able to stop the combo I would probably have lost.

still loving how this deck plays. I still don't think I would change anything main. SB is still up in the air. I like the counters but still no way to deal with a resolved stony silence scares me.
