If you've taken "Wizards' Player Motivation Survey" (http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/magic-fundamentals/magic-general/775130-wizards-player-motivation-survey#c10) one of the things they think we want is to escape into a compelling alternate reality. I don't know anyone like that, and I'd be afraid to know anyone like that. I'd honestly prefer to be cold to cards instead of worrying about what they would want, or feeling sad when a card gets binned, etc, because it's a card game and Liliana is not a person. I don't think applying pronouns to cards is abominable, but it's a step towards that delusion.
I played the Star Trek CCG, and gender was a relevant stat in that game. There were Missions that you literally couldn't complete if you had no Female characters. It made sense from a flavor perspective and made deck construction a bit more complicated.
Only planeswalkers get this special treatment, as can be seen here and in transformation abilities on all versions of Gideon.
