If I find them in the entries, I will explain my reasoning then. I just don't have the time to offer more than that.
Well, having the explanation after the fact does no good as the point of it is to allow the fairplay element of knowing what the guideline is before you violate it.
Personally, I don't see the point of DQ on duplicates at all. I would rather have the contest without them. If you find the item, points. If not, no points. DQ only if you didn't actually find the item. This doesn't need to be a contest about the best or most unique entry, which is what it seems to be more about if you require that people not duplicate each other's entries without knowledge of what the other entries are (huge guessing game) and what qualifies as a duplicate entry (guessing game #2).
Despite the fact that I am Izzet, that amount of (un-fun) random can't be worth the effort when all you have to do is allow duplicate entries. What's the harm?
Well, just forget it. I'm already investing more time + energy arguing minutiae with you, YET AGAIN, + nobody aside from Castle seems to care. So, cheers.

I do not think having no penalization for duplicates is a good thing. But I also do not think penalizing the provider of the original submission is a good thing either, because that may very well result in a scenario one of my fellow clan members has foreseen as a possibility:
Quote from Oceanos »
The new clan contest looks like it'd be a lot of fun. Lots of potential for lurking just to be sure that nobody has the same.
There is indeed much potential for waiting to post your results if you do not want to get DQ'ed scores for any duplicates. I feel like this dilemma can easily be fixed by simply not DQing the original entries of duplicated images; it would in fact encourage clans to submit their entries faster for that very guarantee, which is indeed an encouragement I'm sure we are all for, as we do not want a repeat of the length the last clan contest took

This seems like a good fix... Just as long as people don't poach each other's images. It means you can't really afford to post your own submission in your clan thread for your clanmates to see, as that just opens you up to another clan (a terrible, devious clan that I'm sure doesn't exist) simply saving your own image and posting it in the comp thread before you do.
Very much a worst-case scenario, but if we're trying to iron out bugs in the rules it's something that we'd have to consider. That said, it would be prudent of most clans to maintain a degree of secrecy while they're compiling their entries anyway.

Nobody needs to see the results before I do, so unless people are carelessly posting them in their thread, image theft should not be a problem.
There is a pm function; use it. Clan members send the stuff they find to their representative via pm, reps send their results to the judge via pm, nobody has anything to scout.
Alright, so, we find our respective scavenger hunt pictures amongst ourselves in our respective clan threads, then our representatives gather them up into single PMs addressed to you (or whoever is deemed the Judge). That sounds fine.
I suppose one final write-up that describes the contest, its directions, and its rules will be needed from you, then we can start this thing Did you decide yet on whether or not you want some ideas of scavenger hunt items to be submitted to you from each clan?
WTF!! Can you complain a little more wamyc? I don't see what your problem is here!?! For someone who has been crying about getting a contest off the ground for weeks and weeks now, you certainly do have a lot of ideas for how it should be run.
I agree with every point that Ria came up with....if you use the intarwebs to find your pictures then you run the risk of having that picture be disqualified. Why should some people go out of their way to be as original as possible to get the most points and actually put forth effort to provide good examples of each item on the list, when the other team can take 5 minutes and google image search everything and still get points for it? I mean...you're even getting points if you GIS your pictures and decide to take the one on page 7 instead of page 1 of your search. He's saying that even if you put a freakin hat on your very common dog...you'll get points and not be DQ'd.
But you know what??? you pushed and pushed, like you always do, and now he's pissed. I can blame myself for not coming in here as much as I should, but I'm pretty bored with only reading your crying complaints about this and that. If you have a problem with something in the proposed rules, come up with an alternative rule or rules instead of wasting 5 posts complaining about the same thing! You asked for 3-4 weeks what's going on with the next contest....and couldn't come up with anything in that amount of time???
Sometimes you just gotta STFU and take what's given to you.
Sorry for the rant, but I've had enough of him dominating the Clan Council thread with his constant complaints.

Most of wamyc's points are well thought out and expressed in a legitimate fashion, respectful of the online forum community in which we are a part of. You are welcome to disagree with him, and others, but if you do so, please keep it civil. Some of your comment here is very inappropriate. Insulting someone's character and posting tendencies? Perhaps that sort of thing would be excusable if they were spamming a thread or threads with non-communicative garbage, but this case is far from that.
From the Official Clan Forum Rules:
Quote from Yukora »
1) No flaming
Flaming, a strong attack on a member, or other kinds of personal attacks will not be tolerated and is an infractable offense. In addition to one-on-one attacks, flaming an entire clan or flaming a member who doesn't read/post in your clan thread, especially in an attempt to get your clan riled up, is an infractable offense.
I really despise people using the phrase "STFU" on others...

I understand your comments. I'm not offended by your retort. But...you have to see this from a different perspective. AoK's departure was not expected and was posted on the main forums. Her absence left a hole in the upcoming clan contest, which she was spearheading. This left us with a bunch of questions about what to do with what she was doing. Wamyc, in more than just a few posts, continued to count down the remaining weeks left in the year and the number of contests we "HAVE" to get in. He offers help on the Mafia contest, which Rian explains a couple of times that no help is necessary, but doesn't offer much for the scavenger hunt.
Rianalnn, someone with a life and a family, AND modding duties of his own came through with a modest proposal that forces each clan to actually put forth some effort and not just make this an easy way to gain some points. After a couple of questions and a small rant about the DQ policy from wamyc, Ria explains a little better what his reasons were and why he feels they should be this way. Now remember here, Ria has taken over a contest that he was really looking forward to participating in with his clan mates. Again, wamyc proceeds to comment on the contest and add another complaint to the DQ policy. Since he was bummed about not being able to take part in yet another contest, Ria decides that there must be a DQ policy, and continues to explain in further detail what constitutes a DQ.
Wamyc complains for a third time about the DQ policy, at which point Rianalnn decides that wamyc and the rest of the clan council can go "F" themselves and attempts to pass the baton to another willing participant.
Well thought out or not...the constant *****ing about something you had nothing to do with or contribute to, was enough to drive the only person willing to take on the task of running the next contest to the beach...with a nice stiff drink.

Alright, I understand your dilemma now, and rianalnn's dilemma. I still do not think it is okay to insult someone's character, but I see you in much less of a negative light. I appreciate your well-articulated reply to my comment.
I was not aware, or simply have not realized, that rianalnn has given up his position to run this contest?? This is very unfortunate news... I thought rianalnn's "I meant it when I said forget it" comment was referring to my question of whether or not we were going to have each clan submit potential scavenger hunt items. D'oh.
I will await confirmation from rianalnn, but if he has indeed decided to "pass the torch" of Clan Contest #4, and if this mentioned Zaph does not show up to take it, I am willing to do so.
Always nice to see you in the Council Chambers, jj
I appreciate your offer, Xanth - just be aware for fairness' sake, if you head the contest, your clan has to get on without you (so have a back-up rep ready!), + of course Mono-:symu: will receive a bonus point for running a contest.
Zaph has said to me that he will drop in here to pick up the peices, but if he doesn't in the next day or two, we'll go ahead under your steam.
I think this situation is easily resolved. After AoK checked out, Wamyc and others, had the opportunity to run this contest. And chose not to. Rian took over running it himself, despite the fact that he really doesn't have time to do so.
If other people wanted to see it run a particular way, they could have been involved. But trying to criticize the idea(s) that someone else came up with, when you clearly couldn't be bothered to come with an idea yourself..that just doesn't fly.
And now, Rian has understandably decided to drop out. And you guys are kidding yourself if you think Zaph is actually going to show up in the next 2 days and get this ball rolling. Even if he does show up, he's going to have to try to work out some kind of system of his own, which will just take that much more time. So, what started out as an already pressed issue will now be drawn out as long as possible, all because someone(s) didn't want to be actively involved in running this, but wanted to try to overrule the person that WAS willing to actively run it.
Nicely done.
Zaph told me he'd try to drop in, I'm not sure what reason you have to disregard that? + there is no reason to believe he won't just take the work we've done + roll with that, but even if he chooses to hit the reset, it's not the end of the world.
At any rate, drama is drama. No need to gangbang in here. jj got my back just fine, + he's the Called rep, so, yeah. *baleets post*

Sorry for the rant, but I've had enough of him dominating the Clan Council thread with his constant complaints.
Wow. I'm really glad that I didn't check the boards this week. Maybe it would be best if you kept your very negative opinion of me to yourself. I do attempt to keep the thread alive and moving and welcome others' opinions as that is the surest way to get things done. When people speak up, ideas flow and decisions can be much more easily made. If you don't like the fact that I speak my mind and suggest alternatives and try to foresee problems in contest setups... too bad. The solution is not for people to shut the **** up. It's for people to speak the **** up.
My points about the clan contest, however, remain. In a contest where pics are submitted by PM, you have no way of knowing that you are submitting a duplicate entry. So out of fairness, either
a) make submissions public and only DQ duplicates after the first.
or
b) get rid of punishing duplicates and keep the submissions in PM.
I don't really care how it gets solved. Hence I continue to suggest multiple solutions. And whatever else anyone can think of as well is, as always, welcome. But I think there's some agreement that the setup can use a little polish and that's what I am attempting to do. If it sounds like I am repeating myself, it's because this thread got derailed into drama and I'm trying to get back on topic. (And if that bothers you, anyone else who wishes to speak up and set the agenda is welcome to.)
@ Xanth: (assuming that you are heading the contest at this point, if not, then @Zaph) So, are you thinking of keeping rianalnn's scheme of having a set of points for finding the object online and another separate set of points for real-life pictures? I think it's a good solution as people will want to look for pics online anyway and rewards those who do the extra effort of an IRL pic.
EDIT: I also agree that I like the idea of submitting the ideas publicly and not penalizing the first submitter. I think it's a great way to keep the contest moving and to encourage people to submit and look for the items as you can see how the other clans are doing. It fosters activity through competition, which is the point, no?
Alright, I've received the green light, so here's a (hopefully) well-along draft:
Clan Contest #4:
Scavenger Hunt!
Twenty items (every one's favorite starting life total!) of unique, silly, random, and/or esoteric nature will be posted in the official Clan Contest #4 thread (to be created soon, ideally this coming week).
Goal:To provide images (personal or public) gathered in various ways (personal camera + upload is presumably ideal, though there are some very funny and unique images out there on the great internet) of each scavenger hunt item, and receive points related to both effort and creativity. Oh and don't forget to have fun!
Participants: Each clan, of course. However: each clan will choose a representative (I will ask you for your representatives in the Clan Contest #4 thread before the contest officially begins), and only that representative is allowed to PM me their clan's final collection of images for the contest before the deadline is up.
How to submit your images: Only one image allowed per scavenger hunt item. Discuss among yourselves in your clans; work within your clans to gather your images; compare multiple ones you have for the same scavenger hunt item and vote on the one you want, etc. Do whatever you want to do among yourselves to acquire these images (other than simply sneaking into other clans' threads and stealing theirs! cheaters will be disqualified....this is for fun, there should be no reason to cheat :eyebrow:) and then, once you've got all your twenty (or less) images together, have your representative PM them to me in one single post, designating next to each item: "From Internet" or "Original", by the deadline announced in the Clan Contest #4 Thread (TBA). Incomplete submissions accepted, but only one total submission accepted (there may be some "difficult" scavenger hunt items, after all :p).
Point system: Points will be awarded per image in the following fashion:
+1 Point for an image taken from the internet +2 Points for an original image (taken/created by you or someone in your clan) +1 Point awarded in addition to the image deemed "Most Creative" (:trophy:) of all the entries for each given item number. (Still trying to decide how this will be determined- clan vote? Clan Council vote? My choice?) -1 Point if your image is the same (identical!) as another submitted image. This subtraction will be waived if your image is an original image (and if we get two identical original images, well, something fishy is up...).
How it will end: Once the deadline for the contest has passed, I will post each clan's submissions to the Clan Contest #4 thread a few days or less after the deadline passes. Soon after posting the images (I'll want to give it at least another few days, so that each clan has the opportunity to view each other clan's unique entries, and allow for suspense to build) I will post the calculated scores of each clan, including the data on which image for each item entry was selected "Most Creative", and hand out our Gold, Silver, and Bronze trophies (metaphorically, of course ^_^)!!!! The winners will of course be determined by highest total points.
~Alright, so please let me know if any immediate concerns come to mind regarding this contest, suggestions are fine too, I will try to take everything into account but I want this to be fluid and seamless if at all possible. Clan Contest #3 took quite a while, I'd rather not have a repeat of that.
I'm thinking of giving the contest a 3 week deadline, as originally suggested by rianalnn.
I plan to create a Clan Contest #4 thread sometime in the next few days, sooner if there are less concerns (and preferably more "okay!"s and "looks good!"s) tonight and tomorrow.
Don't use [b][red], that's still reserved for mod use
Just use Clan reps for reps. We know who they are, they know who they are, it's why they're there (except in your clan's case, of course).
If you can be tasked to do it, you decide on the creativity bonus. If you prefer, the Clan Mods can assist. Otherwise it's a lot of fiddling for 20x13clans + will greatly increase downtime.
The How to Submit Your Images section seems needlessly wordy, try to streamline it to just the absolutely necessary idea: Gather 1 pic for each item on the list, submit it by the deadline. Don't worry about suggesting how clans go about this, they'll ask if they need clarification.
Don't make talk of trophies, people get confused + will want one
I like that you've said you will post the submissions once you've received them all, gives everyone something to look forward to, + something to do while the scores are tallied.
Don't use [b][red], that's still reserved for mod use
:facepalm:Sorry, I tend to make these type of mistakes... fixed

I'm fine with doing it myself, but I do think it would be better if the Clan Mods participated as well in the judging process; it would also be ideally more fair. If you Mods would like to, I'd need your time to judge roughly 3.5 weeks from now; you'd be given a few days to gather your results and submit them to me via PM.

Alright, I'll try streamlining it. I want to make it a point to have each clan submit the entirety of their entries to me in one single PM from their Representative. I do not want to deal with a stream of individual posts from each Rep and have to pool them all together; that would likely generate well over 50 PMs to sort through.

Hmm perhaps I could design a trophy of sorts... some kind of small, cute photoshop image for each member of the winning clan to add to their signature that says something along the lines of "Winning Clan of Clan Contest #4!" hehe...
I'm ready to start this thing by tomorrow night or Monday.
I like three weeks as a deadline to get the submissions. Should be more than enough time. And I think it's good that we will get to see others' submissions, too. As for the favorite, I don't think it's too time consuming to have an extra week on the end of it where the clan reps vote on their favorite submission. We have a lot of contests that involve voting on the favorite, so this need not be any different.
If 20 entries seems like too much, why not just have the clans vote on their five most creative entries out of all of the (other clans') submissions?
I originally thought a good deal about letting all the clans themselves vote, at least partly, on the Most Creative entries, but eventually decided against it. It will generate much more delay in us arriving at the contest results, and much more potential turmoil; imagine if the rep of one clan is unreachable for that entire week. Again, I am trying to make this as fluid and seamless as possible while still maintaining an effective and enjoyable contest; as I suppose should be the goal for any online forum community contest, as every individual person has their own unique time constraints.
I'm sure twenty entries will not be too much for myself (and the Clan Mods if they so desire) to vote on over the course of a few days or so.
Sorry, I know I am not on the Clan Council anymore but I don't know where else to put this.
Psi made a request to make a new clan awhile back and we still have had no response, I would greatly appreciate it if we were to get approved, or denied so we can find other clans to join, before the next contest starts so we can participate.
Assuming you don't get a response soon enough from the correct man-in-charge, I suggest you create a new clan thread for the clan you wish to create, then, at the Clan HQ v4.0 (located here), go ahead and post a link to your new clan thread, along with a members roster, etc. I'm not sure where exactly, but probably here, the Clan HQ thread, or via PM to the Clan Mods, you should let them know as well, and additionally, ask them to retire your old clan thread (assuming that is what you want).
Just trying to help so you don't make the same mistakes I made back when I started the "new" Mono Blue Clan thread, hehe...

At any rate, drama is drama. No need to gangbang in here. jj got my back just fine, + he's the Called rep, so, yeah. *baleets post*
Clan Contest #4:
Scavenger Hunt!
Twenty items (every one's favorite starting life total!) of unique, silly, random, and/or esoteric nature will be posted in the official Clan Contest #4 thread (to be created soon, ideally this coming week).
Goal: To provide images (personal or public) gathered in various ways (personal camera + upload is presumably ideal, though there are some very funny and unique images out there on the great internet) of each scavenger hunt item, and receive points related to both effort and creativity.
Point system: Points will be awarded per image in the following fashion: How it will end: Once the deadline for the contest has passed, I will post each clan's submissions to the Clan Contest #4 thread a few days or less after the deadline passes.
Good work Xanth!
:symg::thumbsup:
I'm sure twenty entries will not be too much for myself (and the Clan Mods if they so desire) to vote on over the course of a few days or so.
