Super Smash Bros. Melee. I feel that the multiplayer is just plain better all around than Halo 2. More options, tons of playable fields, it's just better.
Uh, this is like comparing apples to oranges. One is a side-scrolling fighting game, the other is a first-person shooter. They're very different, and both are lots of fun for different reasons.
As a game to play if you have a lot of people, defenatly SSBM. It is a very social game, whereas Halo is not. Insane things can happen, and even if you aren't currently playing, you are having a good time watching the match. Halo is all seriousness. 1 on 1, I would say Halo. But for large groups, nothing beats SSBM.
I picked SSBM because I'm biased towards Nintendo, but in all honesty this is a toughie. I might have to give the edge to Halo 2 because of its online capabilities, but it's a really close race.
Halo 2 is good, but repetitive after a while. SSBM is full of extreme options, and new, amazing situations and maneuvers pop up all the time. In a large group, everyone just has more fun with SSBM than with Halo 2.
I chose SSBM because I can't stand FPSs, but I also think it's a better game for lots of people. Like everyone else said, Halo gets repetitive with lots of players, but SSBM gets more fun the more people you have.
Personally, I love Halo with tons of people. I mean, having two TVs with 8 people is absolutely amazing, so I could just imagine what its like online or with 4 TVs with 16 people.
I loved SSB for the 64, but I haven't played the Cube version much. It was fun, but I couldn't get into it too much, I just didn't have the time. Halo on the other hand is just great. Close quarter rocket launchers is great, the Blood Gulch level, I love it all.
Both are great, but I have to give the edge to Halo.
I think SSBM promotes a more "fun" experience whereas Halo can get a bit too serious at times. Halo's the better multiplayer game, but SSBM is probably the better "party" game.

i totaly agree with mirari and whenever ive played agianst mirari i pwn him he knows it
Halo 2 is a better game for going online and getting your ass kicked. Super Smash Brothers Melee is better for having your friends over and getting your ass kicked.
I personally like SSB better, especially on the Nintendo 64, 'cause thats what I'm used to. Halo 2 DOES get boring after awhile, especially if you play with the same people everytime, and the people I play with are basically pro at it, I suck majorly at Halo 2. Now SSB you have more options and its just more of a fun game.
SSBM is much more fun in a big multiplayer environment - with one restriction. That being if the baseball bat appears, it gets thrown off the level immediately. Either that, or everyone gangs up on the person trying to wield it.
I've had items disabled for a long time. Thats jus ta great solution, then it caters towards to skill rather than "Whoops, a hammer just dropped in close quarters. Guess you got me."
and besides, when i play as the 'pink ball that sucks', i don't suck- and i'm not pink, i'm blue.
my friends hate me when i isolate myself and keep taunting until they all want to kill me. Hi! ... Hi! ... Hi!

I'm great at both, but like SSB:M more, just because of the sheer hailarity of the kills that can unfold, and the situations you can get yourself into/out of.

Which multiplayer/party game is better in your opinion and why?
Halo 2 can get kind of boring after a while, it is kind of repitive. SSBM is a lot more fast paced and is awesome with a lot of people.
