Really.. there are plenty of people more deserving. I can see Obama winning a Peace Prize. But right now it's certainly premature.
I can't. People who think that Obama has a high chance of ever earning the prize (objectively and impartially) are still a bit euphoric from the election. He just isn't that great of a president. He's promised a lot of change that he never came good with. Part of it was from his lack of creativity. (Let's overuse Keynesian economics to solve the recession!) Part of it was from people bashing him to the ground like me (i.e. healthcare reform). Whatever the reason, Obama clearly lacks the courage or intuitiveness to break out of the ordinary president shell.
Most of the "major" changes coming about right now are more attributable to a strongly left-skewed Congress rather than Obama.

Despite this, I take no offense in Obama winning and accepting the Nobel prize. I know for a fact it'll just be one more line in the history books about the most overrated president in the history of the United States. And who can honestly blame him for accepting a medal? I'm actually glad that the Europeans can take the time now to appreciate this nation. It doesn't make so much sense but I'm not going to ask for a good explanation because my expectations for most of the world has become very low. It feels as if China is the only country thinking most of the time.
come on what's all that about of course those nasty communists aren't thinking, you're republican, isn't that heresay or something?
Yes, I'm conservative, but I tend to be more moderate and objective when criticizing administrations. China isn't thinking for the United States or international interests, such as world peace, but it's doing a fine job with what's best for the Communist Party (and China the nation mostly). I find Western countries at the moment positioning themselves horribly for the future. Europe is down the gutter. The United States is not positioned to be a military or imperialist superpower in the future and Europe, financing its own defenses, will fall like a rock with its piling "social reform". The United States, by indebting itself, is leaving itself vulnerable as well. We could easily be Russia in 50 years, with all teeth being in nuclear weaponry and no relevance economically.
I mean, seriously, whatever your political position, this should seem bizarre to you. He hasn't even been POTUS for a year. Couldn't the Committee at least have waited for another six to eight years, to see what he could really accomplish?
WTF is right. The man has neither been President of the United States for even a year, and he's done NOTHING to promote peace of any kind.
I get the feeling that the Prize here is being used as a weapon rather than an award. By doing this, the committee is sort of saying 'This guy knows what he's doing, listen to him'. And it almost certainly will work like that. It's a complete corruption of the intent of the Prize, but aside from that I actually think it was a fairly good idea. But then, I'm not American.
China isn't thinking for the United States or international interests, such as world peace, but it's doing a fine job with what's best for the Communist Party
Stalin did this same thing while he was in power as did Francisco Franco (fascist poart obviously not communist)...:-/

I agree with you 100% (and I usually only post in here to argue so you know I really mean it.) All he's done for world peace is get elected and not be a giant ass, right?
Same thing I thought, and I like the guy. I bet he was thinking 'wtf' too. Prolly someone submitted his name just for ***** and giggles, and, hey, he actually won!
Edit: And the crazy right wingers in the USA are idiots. Guess what? They SCREWED UP THE WHOLE COUNTRY in eight years. They should shut up and go back to their filthy hole. America was a good country under Clinton, and a bad one under Bush. Why are the conservatives *****ing again? If they were so good, the US wouldn't be in a recession right now.
"...to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
Well, Obama has at least managed the first point, what with his recent getting us, France, and Russia to get together about Iran. He has also managed to usher in some good feelings toward the United States in other nations. The problem is, I really don't think he has done it on a scale that warrants this prize.
Al Gore and the IPCC certainly deserved the award, though. We so often look at the Peace Prize as lessening current violence, but they worked hard to preempt future wars. Look at the wars that happen when people get displaced, now imagine several hundred million people get displaced due to climate change. In some ways, we're still fighting World War II.

thanks for that... way to prove you have no understanding of politics, or economics. For starters if you think conservative=bush you should go look up the meaning of the word and what he did.
Not that i disagree that the crazy right wingers are crazy just like the crazy left wing.
There's a great bit of irony in Turkey and Armenia agreeing to a landmark deal today with the heavy involvement of Hillary Clinton, only a day after Obama won the NPP.
And Fatguy to be fair Bush championed himself as a great conservative, just like Obama championed himself to be a liberal. And just as you find conservatives who think Bush wasn't conservative enough for their likings (which would be true) there are plenty of liberals who think Obama hasn't been nearly liberal enough for their likings (which would also be true)
Not disagreeing. My point is that economically speaking bush presided over one of the largest increases in federal spending.... thats not slight right of center(like obama is slightly left), thats left of center... its not the same comparison.
It was hasty but I hope it draws attention to some of the positive things he is pushing, universal health care, green jobs, disarming the warhead pile, and middle east peace. A lot of great goals, but lets see him get over a hill first.

I'm just wondering who's gona get the next award. I'm almost sure they'll mention, "If I were Obama, I woulda had this 4 years ago."
1) Obama probably won as a last choice. I really have to think hard about someone who would be deserving of a Nobel prize this year. Lets face it, noone did anything relevant these latest years (at least that I can remember).
2) Yeah, Obama may be a controversial recipient of the prize, just as Al Gore and Arafat were to some posters in this thread. But lets not forget that Kissinger also won a Nobel prize for the Vietnam peace talks, and he surely was no saint, as he was involved in lots of US military interventions, specifically in South America (Pinochet, etc...)
The point being that the Nobel prize is not awarded for lifetime achievements, but for specific actions in support of peace. If say Satan would rise from the depths of Hell and somehow proceeded to solve the Israelo-Arab conflict, I'm quite certain he would be awarded a Nobel prize.
I think the point is more that he really hasn't done anything...at all.
Though I do like the idea that he's a last minute pick. Makes you realize how crappy our world is right now that he have to resort to "well, he's just as good as anyone" to give out the Nobel...
I've not really read much of this thread, but pretty much the gist of what I read it what I've read on so many other forums. So for those of you that don't think Obama deserves it, who do you think should have gotten it? Yeah, I'm pretty sure 99% of the people asked this question that complain about Obama getting it cannot answer this question.
And people seem to think that he's only getting it because of what he's done as president. Well while that has definitely had a big influence on it, a lot of you seem to forget that he was a senator prior to being president and a very good one at that. Hence the reason the democrats saw fit to nominated him to run for president.
Then of course there are people here that say "He's talking about doing this and that but hasn't done it yet so why does he get it for something that's not been completed?" Well, didn't MLK Jr win the award and all he did really was give a speech and fight for equal rights? Isn't this what Obama is doing. Giving a speech and fighting for what he believes in? What's the difference? Just because you don't see or notice a change, doesn't mean there isn't a change or that he hasn't fought towards a change.
The man completely deserves this award. More than any of the other nominations? I'm not sure, I cannot say. But don't say he hasn't done anything, because he sure as hell has.
I decided to follow his lead in my current career.
I'm going to make a bunch of empty promises. Throw out a random ludicrous idea here and there. But in all reality sit and do nothing, accomplish nothing.
maybe then I will win a promotion, or heck, a NPP for myself.

Agreed.
People seem to think that to win the Nobel Peace prize that you have to be Ghandi or Mother Teresa so when someone wins the award who the general populace knows then they are compared to the only people they can think who won before hand, which a lot of the time is only such bigger than life figures. Alred Nobel himself didn't even make this award under the idea that you had to do something specifically, but Obama has fit under what Nobel did have in mind which was moreso inspiring the masses towards action and peace themselves. A lot of the winners is the past who aren't known too much in America also didn't "do" anything specifically other than inspire.
This is also significant because this award is global, not national. The world essentially chose Obama, which shows an admiration and a new found respect for our country, specifically because it is our president - not something we have had for a while.
I find it amusing how quickly we are to condemn people and complain about an award race which we really don't care about unless it is an outlet for our complaining. Generally we know nothing about any of the winners and as said before, I'm sure not too many can come up with a list of people who they were cheering for as the countdown continued towards the announcement. Perhaps you all had a Nobel Peace prize fantasy league and first picked Morgan Tsvangirai? Give me a break. It is good for the US that Obama won and although Obama has not cured cancer during his presidency, that does not make his an unworthy recipient. He has fought against poverty before he was in office and has inspired millions around the world.

Fun facts:
Ghandi never won the NPP
Curing Cancer would decidedly NOT win you the NPP, you would most likely win the Chemistry prize.
Almost EVERYONE was surprised at the announcement, because there were other nominated candidates who had done meaningful things to work toward the goals of the NPP. It is blatantly obvious that Obama has not done anything meritorious of the NPP and that his receipt of the award is a political commentary / tool. What makes him an unworthy recipient is that he hasn't actually done anything.

Really? Like who? What did they do that would put them above Obama for the prize? I'm honestly curious, because like I said it's not as though I follow the race for the Nobel Peace Prize actively and know who the front runner were. Hell, I had no idea that Obama was even nominated or when the prize was going to be announced. I just happened to see that he won it and felt a sense of pride that I saw an American president win the prize in my lifetime. Not everyone can say that. I for one, as much as I hated him, would not complain if McCain had one and gotten the prize. I would feel the same way. It's awesome that an American president came away with the prize. You have to do something in order to get the prize. To say he has done nothing is ridiculous.

OSLO - Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Colombian senator Piedad Cordoba and Chinese dissident Hu Jia are among the favorites to win the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, Norwegian national broadcaster NRK reported Friday. French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt and Afghan woman's rights activist Simi Samar also are possible candidates for the prestigious prize, NRK said, about an hour before the Norwegian Nobel committee was set to announce the prize at 11 a.m. (0900GMT). As always, the...
Unfortunately the same website has replaced the full article about their predictions of who would win (of which this is the beginning) with their article about Obama winning, but this at leasts shows several people who were expected. You'll also note that there are several articles around refering to the audible gasps of surprise when the announcement was made that Obama had won, since nobody expected his nomination to win prior to the announcement.
Why not? People bet and debate over what sports team will win their little games, I think it is far better for people to be interested in the outcome of Nobel Prizes. It actually matters in some degree.

I disagree. Who gives a crap about the nobel peace prize now. It means NOTHING. It fell victim to the same sensationalism that got the man elected in the first place. I will say it again, I feel truly sorry for the legacy of the past winners, as this joke of an award belittles those prior winners.
