to be clear... each storm copy resolves, and it deals its damage on the stack, not all at once.
A copy enters= 1 damage (1)
B copy enters +A trigger= 2+2 (4)
C copy enters + A trigger + B trigger= 3+3+3 (9)
D copy enters +A rigger + B trigger + C trigger= 4+4+4+4= (16)
So! Storm 0 = 1 damage all together
Storm 1 = 5 damage all together
Storm 2= 14 damage all together
Storm 3= 30 damage exact.
If all else fails, at least one Scourge of Valkas kills Bob, mana dorks, Grim Lavamancer, Tiago, V. Clique, Viscera Seer, Pestermite, Thalia(!!!), and more on entry.

How good is Goblin Diplomats at being a decent beater (well, 2 power for 2 mana) that can mess up combat hard? (Well, it's good at getting Bob and Melira creamed, but it just taps mana dorks, gets Goyf blocked by something tiny, and plays huge risks with Batterskull, and it also can't get manlands to swing all the time...on the other hand, they can't block your guys with much next turn...)

And works well as Hellkite number 5, in case you draw one of them. 3 Hellkites and a Scourge deals 19 damage, which should be enough. It wins without combat and it's castable, unlike Karrthus.

If you get the Scourge first, that + three Hellkites is 25 damage, actually. If you go two Scourges, then two Hellkites, it's 29. And if you go three Scourges, then one Hellkite, it's 31. (It's 30 if you just get four Scourges, as was already pointed out.) So, Scourge is actually better than Hellkite. However, what it doesn't do is let you win with only two storm, so the difference is minute.
On the other hand, Karrthus + two Hellkites does kill, provided no flying blockers. Even Karrthus + one Hellkite does 17. You don't get numbers like that with Scourge. So, in fact, the Hellkite + Karrthus plan is still likely better.

I was thinking in getting the Hellkites first, leaving the Scourge for last as the Karrthus replacement. That's a good point.

Whenever a player taps a nonbasic land for mana, Burning Earth deals 1 damage to that player.
I think for modern it really needs to cost 3, but is this useful to us at all?

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
no. taking damage for land is not something that people care about. jund doesn't care if it starts the game at 13 or 15 life. you need something to stop them from getting mana out of the land.

If only it had cost 3... Although to be honest, this sort of nonbasic land hatred helps out aggressive strategies more than slower ones, and it's not like the aggressive decks need any more help in Modern. Where's my darn Back to Basics?

We got Elvish Mystic the Llanowar Elves reprint. I'm definitely taking out at least 2 of the Deathrites in my Combo Elves deck for it, but should I just switch to the white splash or no splash instead and drop Deathrite entirely?
Yeah. The only reason to play Earth over the currently unplayable Manabarbs would be for an asymmetrical effect. But any deck that could take advantage of an opponent being pinged for damage is also necessarily an aggressive and fast deck that likely wouldn't care about the damage being asymmetrical. The card just isn't the hate that our format needs, although there is also no reason to believe that Wizards thought that this bad Primal Order would help Modern.
I'm so glad that Scavenging Ooze is in M14. I've been waiting to try that card out in some decks for Modern now I can since it's legal now and the price is dropping. It seems to work really nice in Midrange. Also I was wondering if it is good to buy the Ooze at $13 a piece now or wait until it possibly goes even lower.

It is a rare and a powerful one at that. I doubt it'll go much lower so I'd go for it. Even if it goes down a little more I don't see it going below $10

The only problem is it's a rare as well as the promo for the game. You must keep this in mind.
I'm definitely boarding in Celestial Flare in to deal with Thrun, Traft, and Bogles. If some people were desperate enough to board in Dispense Justice earlier...
Yeah, the WW cost is awkward. I'm sure some White Weenie deck may want this as a sideboard card.
Besides the Ooze reprint (now I can get foils!) I am not terribly excited about this core set. I guess the new Llanowar Elves variant is nice to have, considering that now I can have those foils as well for older format Elves decks (Fyndhorn Elves did not have a foil version) but the set is not really geared for older formats IMO.

You can't always win, and just because you lose doesn't mean you played badly.
Even if you lose, it is important to remain confident in your ability to make good plays and decisions. Lose that and you are truly lost.
Testing is great, and the better the testing is, the better off you'll be.
It is impossible to tilt and play well.
It is possible to make no mistakes and still lose.

Yep. Feeling very silly right now for a double rules failure. So is this how it works?
Scourge 1 enters: 1 damage (1 total)
Scourge 2 enters, triggers self and Scourge 1: 2 + 2 (4) damage (5 total)
Scourge 3 enters, triggers self, Scourge 1 and 2: 3 + 3 + 3 (9) damage (14 total)
Scourge 4 enters, triggers self, Scourge 1, 2, and 3: 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 (16) damage (30 total)
That (finally) seems right.
Yes, that's correct.

Doesnt seem worth it. I think giving creatures aversion still seems better.

The only problem is it's a rare as well as the promo for the game. You must keep this in mind.
Here are some examples of cards which used to be worth a lot before their reprints:
Birds of Paradise $15
Grim Lavamancer $10
Serra Avenger $8
Akroma's Memorial $20
Stuffy Doll $8
Solemn Simulacrum $8 (it actually went up for a while due to Standard, but it's worth $3 now)
All these cards fit the bill of rares in old/underprinted sets. Scavenging Ooze is likely to follow this path. I think it'll drop to about $5-10.
Just something to consider, you can buy DotP 2014 for $9.99 and cash it in for a promo. Logically, the price of Ooze should be lower than that.
