MBC is far and away the best mono color deck. It also has the only board wipe. Crypt Ghast > Griselbrand is way over the top of anything another mono color decks can do.
Gloom Surgeon and Nighthawk can slow down the aggro decks. If you resolve Griselbrand vs aggro they just lose on the spot.
If you make it to turn 8, they probably already lost.
I dont know about building a MBC right now. Liliana is a must , and doesnt look like a good time to buy it for 47 bucks.
I do not think she is a must. The cards that her +1 work best with are all multicolored.
I would probably prefer Liliana of the Dark Realms in over Liliana of the Veil in a MBC deck, since she helps pump mutilate, has targeted removal, and thins the deck.
2 Wholes answers. I think I'll take that. GoST had 2 answers during SOM-INN and he was a boss because of it.
those were 2 examples. There are dozens of cards in standard right now that can kill him. Of those, many are playable and in the colours the guy above me mentioned. Not including counterspells; fiend hunter, oblivion ring, bone splinters, murder, rapid hybridization, clone, victim of night, angel of serenity all deal with him and could easily see play in a tourney like the one the OP is talking about.
geist is harder to answer because it has hexproof.
There was that one mono black vamps that won MTGO daily a month ago. I would just adjust it for a full set of Ultimate Price or use some Gloom Surgeon. Gloom Surgeon will be almost totally safe and will be asking for removals while Nocturnus, Nighthawk, and Keeper and stay safe.
I haven't tested it yet, but I did a lot with BR zombies shortly after rotation. This should be able to go the straight up aggro route on a good hand, but it's more often going to play an almost combo-ish game of sac outlet - sac crawler, make demon, or etc. There's a lot of lines of play mainboard, and that's what you're going to want going into a largely unknown metagame. You have 8 cards that get better when something of yours dies, and you have 8 cards that are either sac outlets or board sweeps, and two of those sac outlets can net you a ton of card advantage.
I've always liked the messenger -> disciple line of play. +3 CA, +3 life, your opponent loses 2 life and you now have a 4/3 beater? You can then chain that into a high priest activation, and so on and so forth.
Sideboard...human frailty eats white weenie for lunch, as does the extra mutilate. Nighthawk and Crypt Incursion give you game against faster aggro decks. Connections and lili give MBC a hard time doing anything worthwhile. And I really, really like Bloodline Keeper in any matchup with a clogged boardstate (use your discretion here)
I like it. I currently have a vamps list in the works as well, and I'm definitely sb'ing some crypt incursions for the rdw matchups. And yes, my LGS does all sorts of fun formats, last week was pauper standard.
What do you guys think of this list? It doesn't seem like getting a hold of griselbrands will happen, and this seems like a good alternative.
I piloted a slightly altered BR version of it and it tramples over all the aggro decks I played against. I've played against RDW and Mono Green and they don't stand a chance. I'm assuming most people will be running those two over White Weenies or Mono Blue.
Red/Green/White can all be treated just about the same strategy wise, so you can save your sideboard for mirror matches or against blue. Cavern of Souls will cripple Blue, while Duress, Liliana of the Veil, and Pithing Needle seals the deal with any sort of control shells.
Some mono color decks are pretty strong right now. With MBC you would not only want Liliana of the Veil but also Staff of Nin and Trading Post. Lily at under $50 now is a steal as she will go up once she rotates as she is a multi-format card.
However Mono Green may be a way to go. You can even call it "Green Cards"...which is funny in and of itself.

I think you are missing the point. If you point anything at griselbrand he is going to draw 7 usually into another one. Gives you a full grip to extort from also.
Green has both Garruks, Thragtusk, gyre sage, Wolfir Silverheart, Strangleroot Geist, somerwald sage, craterhoof behemoth
White has the human assortment, restoration angel, angel of serenity, entreat the angels, terminus
black has mutilate, liliana of the veil, gravecrawler, geralf's messenger, bloodgift demon, bloodline keeper, desecration demon, griselbrand, the manaflare extort guy, sign in blood, tragic slip, barter in blood, sever the bloodline,
red has pillar, spear, hellrider, thundermaw, ash zealot, stromkirk noble, electrickery
no rakdos cackler, burning-tree emissary, flinthoof boar (its awful without red), sphinx's revelation, zegana, lotleth troll, far/away, turn/burn, warleader's helix, supreme verdict, charms, ghor-clan, voice of resurgence, unburial rites, makes a lot of decks impossible to play (or muuuuuuch weaker).
Mono black control all day especially now with haunted plate mail. It works great with killing wave. I'm working on one right now and not going towards crypt ghast and griselbrand
mostly just lots of removal hand destruction and vampire nighthawk
If you make it to turn 8, they probably already lost.
Geralfs messenger looks good in the deck , even better with mutilate.
I do not think she is a must. The cards that her +1 work best with are all multicolored.

It had removal in many relevant areas: Plummet, Bramblecrush, some fight spells.
Arbor Elf
Strangle-root Geist
Predator Ooze
Rancor
Wild Defiance
Wolfir Silverheart
Vorapede
Ranger's Guile
Sheltering Word
Mending Touch
Such good to be had.
Griselbrand comes down on turn 5. Good luck killing him with anything that is mono colored.
ultimate price does the trick, as does plummet
