Tidebinder Mage looks like it hoses red and green creatures that love to swing or tap for mana pretty well. For a UU 2/2, it taps a red or green guy and keeps it tapped until it LTB! That hoses Goyf, Deathrite, sort of Kitchen Finks, sort of Scavenging Ooze, summoning sick Grim Lavamancer...
...Sideboard play in Merfolk, maybe?
Nuts.
It could just say red and it would see fringe SB play in Merfolk. It could just say green and it would see a good amount of SB play in Merfolk. Saying both is not only an auto-include in EVERY Merfolk deck but might see play outside Merfolk or maybe fringe main-deck. Merfolk players rejoice!
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.

Well, it's not like the new Merfolk is unconditional removal. I just feel that <=2 CMC is less of a drawback than being able to target red or green creatures only.
Tapping down only stops attacking/blocking and activated abilities (and then, only those that require the creature to tap). It doesn't stop triggered or static abilities. Stealing stops all of these, AND confers the benefits to you.
Being a creature is a liability. With Threads, you steal their creature, and if they kill the creature, that's the end of it. With the Merfolk, you tap down their creature, and if they kill your 2/2, they get their creature back. Of course you can say "what if they kill your Threads instead?" Then yeah, they also get their creature back. However, there are more things that can kill a creature than there are things that can kill an enchantment.
So what relevant creatures in modern are neither red or green?
Blue is pretty irrelevant to merfolk unless it's the mirror too.... This card misses what? Lingering souls tokens? Stuff in life gain? That's about it to be honest. Unless someone is trying to swing in with a 2/1 bob that is.

Tideshaper is powerful enough it should be tried out in fish regardless if threads ends up being better. Dont forget that modern merfolk are more agressive then their tempo big brothers in legacy, so having a body that gets pumped on curve could be relevant.

Marginally. Usually they want to flash in the creature that will be copied and then play the Splinter Twin/Kiki-Jiki on their turn immediately afterwards. Maybe they'd play it differently against Merfolk because the deck isn't known for sorcery speed removal, but if it goes according to their gameplan then they tap him in response or they should already have a Pestermite/Deciever Exarch trigger to untap him on the stack.
Spellskite seems like a better hate-creature because it hits 75% of the combinations. (Only Deciever Exarch + Kiki-Jiki can't have one or more piece be stolen)
I was going to say maybe he meant Kiki Pod rather than Twin, but the same thing pretty much applies. It would be one thing if Kiki didn't have haste, but since he does there's pretty much no situation where tapping him will actually do anything. If you play Kiki first, your other combo piece untaps him, and if you play the other thing first, Kiki activates immediately on coming in and you never get a chance to respond when he isn't already tapped.
The only situation I can come up with where it's useful against Kiki in Pod is if (1) he's being Chorded out, (2) but not during the opponent's end step or the Pod player's turn, (3) the other combo piece is already in play (and the Pod player doesn't have another one around), and (4) it's Deceiver Exarch, specifically.
Otherwise, if it's during the Pod player's turn they can just go off in response, if the other combo piece is coming in after they can just untap Kiki, and if the other combo Piece is Angel or Conscripts, they can blink Kiki or steal the Mage in response, either of which will prevent Kiki from being locked down.
I am sure that situation has come up at some point in history. But maybe just the once.

When you peer long enough through the depths, the depths peer also through you.
Witchstalker probably suffers from 3 glut, but it could find a home. Then again I am the guy that loves Predator Ooze in Modern, so I may be a bit biased towards slow growers.

This makes sense. For some reason I assumed that the card that is tapped down by Tidebender could not be untapped by other interactions. Pretty silly on my part!
Edit: This makes Tidebender less appealing to me... I guess its main utility then lies in matchups against Goyf.
A lot of "blue hate" cards fail because they only possess one of these two qualities:
1) Can't be countered
2) Survives Bolt
Go on - try it for Skylasher, Great Sable Stag, Troll Ascetic.

I speak in sarcasm because calling people ******* ******** is not allowed.
Thrun, however, is a quite good card, better than this new thing. It's pretty much the entire reason that some of the WUR lists are playing Wrath of God main or side. Because wrath of god is basically the only thing that can deal with it. He can attack into batterskull germ, colonnade, restoration angel, beat wall of omens and kitchen finks, etc, all without the condition of your opponent needing to cast two spells on your turn for some of those.
And if you care less about the body and more about the defense against counters and the like, voice of resurgence is a fine card in modern in many decks.
Imposing Sovereign Good? i dunno. But 2/1 for 2 fits hatebear status (Hatebear being the term hate bear, not the deck) and shuts off haste/creature combos. worth a look at. Pretty cool tool.
Lifebane Zombie looks pretty narrow. It's rather comparable to Sin Collector, but it collects green and white creatures only, such as Melira Pod combo pieces, Goyfs, Deathrites, Restoration Angels, and Scavenging Oozes. Otherwise, it's a 3/1 with Intimidate for 1BB, which isn't terrible, but isn't so hot, either.
Imposing Sovereign looks fairly good in hate-leaning Zoo decks, though. It doesn't slow down Tron, Vedalken Shackles, and Isochron Scepter like Blind Obedience does, but it swings for 2! They'll hate seeing their blockers ETB tapped, and Kiki-Jiki will rage...

Threads can't deal with 3+-drops (Finks, Loxodon Smiter, Knight of the Reliquary, Thundermaw Hellkite, Olivia Voldaren until she finds 2RR, Murderous Redcap, Huntmaster of the Fells--Threads can fall off Ravager of the Fells as soon as it flips back, Thragtusk, etc.).
Also Threads can't be Phantasmal Imaged like the new Merfolk ;).

Relevant stuff we'd rather Threads than slam with the new Merfolk include Bob, Tiago, Melira (especially if they have a Pod out), non-summoning sick Grim Lavamancer, Infect's guys, Thalia, Tidehollow Sculler, Spellskite, Viscera Seer, Cartel Aristocrat (good luck getting her, though)...
Perhaps Tideshaper Mage vs. Threads is a meta call.
If you have aether vial in play, Tideshaper is more useful against kiki-jiki, mirror breaker than threads of disloyalty. It is worthy of being tested.
