i already sold him when he was ~2month ago.
since i kinda knew he would not be reprinted, and he will drop pretty fast now. he is already had 12€ now.
same for falkenrath aristocrat. i sold them at the same time for 15€, now they already dropped to 7.
it really was a good choice to get rid of cards which will rotate in ocotobre pretty early.
Meh, both of those cards have seen modern play I think there are more juicy targets to dump if you want max value 2 months ago from Standard.
Falkenrath hasn't fallen that much in price compared to most of the cards rotating soon.
I would like to see something like this. It looks like w Wizards could be trying to do more with mono-black at least (Corrupt and Quag-Sickness), though we did lose Mutilate : (. Maybe we'll get a new black sweeper or maybe even a reprint of Damnation :D.
Damnation won't get a reprint, since regeneration is supposed to matter. Except for Putrefy. And Rapid Hybridization.
However, with DoJ out per the Crunch, we may finally see the Black version of it (because Modern needs another board wipe). That, and I really wouldn't care to see a Planar Cleansing reprint.

Yeah, this is a good point, WOTC has been moving away from "Can't be regenerated, for quite some time. I think a Black version of day DoJ would be just fine. We could also see a new White sweeper too, though I think a Black one would fit in better with "Swamps Matter (though it is officially only on two cards)." Personally I'm pretty sick of Planar Cleansing as well. I don't really think they'd do a core set without a sweeper at all.
Any chance of Royal Assassin coming back, or is WoTC pretty much done with him?
I don't recall any animosity towards him being stated by WotC, so I suppose so. He's always been acknowledged to be strong in limited, but not completely ridiculous for a rare, there are plenty of answers to him. He also gives Johnny drafters a little combo to work with in conjunction with tappers, which is nice to have in a core set draft occasionally.
As far as constructed magic, there were a few times I stuck him into some brews when the time seemed right, G/B midrange rock decks and things like that, and it was OK for FNM-level competition. I'd love for him to be back, since I own two Beta copies that I like to play with -- any black card especially looks so much nicer in Alpha/Beta
If I were WotC, I would have put Royal Assassin in this set, plus Shivan Dragon, and as many iconic Alpha reprints as I could cram into the set. You could put them on a "time-shifted" sheet or something like that, even use the old card frames! That's the point of having a big 20th anniversary set, to celebrate the origins of the game and the people who are still around from the beginning. The more of the set we see and none of that is happening, the more it looks like the game isn't for us anymore, it's for the new players, and tying it in with DotP to market to newbies is more important than tying it in with the game's history and legacy.

Core sets are typically supposed to be marketed for newer players. However, while there's always going to be reprints in the set, they always put out new cards for those of us who play the game. They know they can't please everyone.
A super-limited edition product like that is hardly an appropriate way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the game. I'm typically able to purchase FTV sets if I want them, but the cards will just sit in binders and never get played. Unlike a core set, which stays in Standard play for a year, FTV will be hyped for a couple weeks then promptly forgotten.
I've been assuming for the last few years that we would be building up to something special, a lot of old cards being brought back en masse, so have a lot of people on these boards, and it's shocking how little they're doing with the 20th anniversary core set to honor the game's history. The year is passing them by as if there's nothing special about it at all.
We have enough of the name/number crunch done at this point to know a great deal about this set, and it really seems like they're embarassed by it to be letting all this out ahead of schedule and with such little fanfare. There's enough room left for them to have held back one or two splashy cards for later previews, but there's no room left for any big hidden theme, what we see here is pretty much what we're getting. Just more ho-hum garbage about integration with DotP, more marketing of the same bland planeswalker characters, more pretending MTG didn't exist before about 2007.
Unfortunately yes. We could definitely see a new Black sweeper though.
Here's hoping. I read somewhere that MaRo said Damnation could be reprinted since even though it's a shifted card it still makes sense in Black. Looks like there's room in the crunch for it so far and I'm crossing all my fingers. Certainly not going to hold my breath though.

Are you new to the game? This is how every core set has been spoiled for the last few years. Just because MTGS posters expected them to reprint Armageddon or whatever doesn't mean they were supposed to.

This.
M13 wasn't much more phenomenal than what we've seen of M14 IMO, and we still have a lot of cards left to be spoiled.

I played from 94 to 97 and came back to the game during M11 spoilers, so this is the 4th yearly core set spoiler season I've gone through. There are way more mythics spoiled at this point than I recall in prior years at this time during the spoiler cycle, and more of the set in general.
And no I wasn't expecting cards that blatantly break the modern game philosophy, but there are plenty of nostalgic reprints from Alpha they could have done that weren't Armageddon or Sinkhole or whatever. That they deliberately chose to replace Llanowar Elves with a functionally identical generic card this year shows they weren't even bothering to try. I guess I just thought that the 20th anniversary core set would somehow celebrate 20 years of Magic, rather than just being business as usual and something to be quickly forgotten to hype the fall set.
Looking at the HTML code on Wizards website, you can count the tags preserved for cards. To enable users to jump to card types (white, blue etc buttons at the start), they put each of these Span elements inside a Div element named after its type.
Notice there is one free Span element before Ajani's Chosen (Ajani will be there) and two free Span elements between Ajani's Chosen and Archangel of Thune. Counting like this you can say how many cards of each color we can expect.
Are the flavor texts for the Staffs Of.. in the partial spoiler from the cards or are they homebrews?
Ambition/ruthlessness and Ferocity/opportune seem a little off. Are they translated from a different language?
Even if "opportune time" is rephrased as "a time of opportunists" it would still seem a little strange to me. I would think it would fit MUCH better paired with conviction rather than stretching opportunism to essentially mean "craven"

I mean, it's not like you were tricked into thinking that. "M14 is going to be super special because of the anniversary" was something people made up here because it sounded neat. FTV:20 is a much more appropriate place for a retrospective. You don't go out and wear the same clothes on your 20th anniversary that you did when you got married; you're celebrating the long tenure of your relationship, not merely its beginning.
I am very pleased to see that searing spear is not being reprinted in this set, and that shock shall be taking its place, again. While neither of those cards is as excellent as lightning bolt, at least shock is better than searing spear, as its damage-to-mana ratio is 2 for 1, rather than the 1.5 for 1 that the spear provides.
