Jonas Kostler played Commune with Nature in a Kiki-Pod deck at GP Lyon last year...although he was later seen without them (and without Chord as well) at GP Bilbao.
I suppose its the same as trying to build Jund without Goyf (which i tried as well) only difference is I'm willing to pay $25-30 on a Chord and not willing to shell out $100-180 for a Goyf lol
p.s Just getting into Legacy and Modern so hence why I'm looking at competitive decks without the $1000 price tag (built Hypergenesis for Legacy)
I am really not going to spend that much on it... not when I still need to spend the money on the lands they are top priority.
Maybe I'll get them eventually.. I mean I can't afford the voices either.. so my deck will probably not be done for a least another year... I guess that is the advantage of a non rotating format... you can plan a long way ahead and save up and wait.
My current soultion is simply to run more copies of everything... or redunancy.. at least thats my current plan... and run the same effect at each cmc. Up the chain so i can go get any effect with the pod.
The manabase required to support Wargate in a Pod list would defeat the purpose of asking for a budget solution.
There is Fauna Shaman; she tutors to hand, but she's a decent body that you can Pod in and out of. Not perfect, but maybe you reconfigure your deck a little to put in multiple Reveillarks or something and try to value your opponents to death. You get a little more flexibility and the same sort of reactivity that Chord provides, which is the biggest thing.
GSZ is not a replacement for Chord; Chord is a replacement for GSZ if you can't run GSZ for whatever reason (e.g. bannings).

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.

Not quite true; GSZ can only fetch green creatures, and is Sorcery speed. Chord costs GG more, but it's instant, has convoke, and can get any color creature, which is critical for fetching all but one piece of the Melira combo. I think even if GSZ were legal, Chord would get the nod.

I draft and play EDH. If a Standard player can't understand who a card is for, it's probably for me.
I also write things about good films.
