It is pretty amusing though that a deck like this which builds itself from the obvious card interactions and has a couple of slots to tinker with immediately gets credited to pros building it.
Many people were running it on MTGO this week, myself I was also playing with a list minus the one drops for fun testing. I saw how strong Master and Thassa were and managed to snap up lots before the increase.
But yeah I guess we'll forever have this deck credited to the pros who are the innovaters behind Magic... All the devotion decks and the Xenagos / Nykthos Ramp decks are anything but new, but this was the first time they've been broadcast to the broader public.
There is some satisfaction to be had though in getting the cards cheaply before the bandwagon jumps on board.
I expect to see 'American' midrange ascend with the rise of mono-blue. Verdict and Anger, plus Shock/Magma Jet/Warleaders Helix/Celestial Flare to deal with mutavaults. You know what else would be pretty nice (in a different deck)? Gruul Charm vs the fliers.
The TCGPlayer States in Miss had a finals match of Mono-Blue devotion vs Blue-Splash-Black devotion.
There is a vast breadth of difference between building a deck to win a single event and building a deck that can survive and adapt in a changing meta game. Notice how the original build of Aristocrats got scrapped within two weeks of its pro tour debut? Playing subpar cards with synergy can attack an open field well enough but it will never last the test of time.
Don't understand how some people are still discrediting this by saying it folds to Supreme Verdict when it went against Esper and didn't fold to Supreme Verdict. Or how Illness in the Ranks apparently wrecks it as well. That's why you have a SB, right? To answer things that make your deck lose?

What does everyone think these pro tour results mean for control being a deck? It's nice that one got into top 8, but a mono-creature deck meta seems depressingly possible. Maybe I'm just panicky.

Whats so bad about it? When was the last time a mono-colored deck made that much waves(hehe)?
I definitely prefer it over the 3 color goodstuff decks from last season.

The monoblue deck is fine. In fact, it's filled with great blue cards, and thus I like it since I like blue. But it's more the absence of decks. More specifically, the absence of more than one high-placing control deck. I am suspicious of the meta being midrange-centric.
I think the control decks will have to adapt once again to make up for change in the format. Before, you could Verdict away creatures and be okay. Now, since aggro decks arent as prone to over extending, Verdict on 4 never really guarantees an auto win.

The Demons and Dragons Red/Black deck that Cifka and many other European players ran is more of a control deck than a mid range deck. It didn't put up any Top 8s, but there were plenty of them with a high number of match wins for the Standard rounds of the event. There is also a lot of variation between UW Control and Esper Control, and the Esper lists are reasonably diversified.
The format is more skewed towards aggro and mid range, yes, but there's a solid amount of variation in those fields, too. Aggro is represented by RDW, Selesnya, Blue Waves and Gruul aggro. That's 4 different archetypes, and there's definitely wiggle room in terms of card choices. Mid range is even more diversified. Control is a bit more narrow, but represented. I'd say PT Theros gives us a good snap shot of a healthy and competitive Standard format.
The mono-blue deck was interesting to see in action, but it seems more like a glass cannon than anything. The biggest reason for it's success was due to the fact that the field wasn't prepared for it, however I think it'll be easy to deal with now that more people know of its existence. Very fun deck, but I doubt we'll be seeing much more of it in the near future. It has gotta splash something so that it isn't so vulnerable. While this was Thassa's coming out party, I feel like each of the major gods (maybe not Heliod) will get their chance to shine soon enough.
I'm already expecting to see a ton of Mono-Blue imitation decks at my LGS for the next few weeks. Been working on a BG Rock build and I'm thinking that it might be a great answer for it with all the useful removal available to BG as well as things like Golgari Charm (which I feel will be great this season) and Illness in the Ranks in the sideboard.
I can't wait to see the first batch of dual dolored gods come the next expansion, devotion has already made for some very interesting decklists in the last few weeks. It's a nice change of pace after last season where everything was 3-4 colors. Should be a good season.
This PT has been very interesting, to say the least.
The Mono-U Devotion seems a blast, but I'm curious to see how people will react to it. I know I'm having Golgari Charm somewhere in my 75 for the next couple of weeks, at least. Very interesting BW Midrange stuff as well from Rietzl/Chapin.
Great to see some mono-colored decks making names recently (RDW, Mono-U Devotion, hell even Monoblack with Pack Rat).
This Pro Tour was definitely great. Im just watching a few replays of a scheduled on MTGO and people are playing all kind of Devotion decks.
Mono-green, Mono-blue, Mono-black etc. and I dont think these decks will fall of. The plays that they can pull of are just too good.
Im playing a red one personally which is probably the most explosive one because of Purphoros, the hammer, the fanatic and Stormbreath Dragon. I will definitely try out the other ones too but the blue one will probably be last since prices are so high because of the hype right now.
I secretly was hoping for a combo deck with Grey Merchant and Whip. Love it.
Favorite Pro Tour ever. Awesome decks, sick brews and a live stream that wasnt really late at night. Nothing like drinking coffee and seeing pros play.
As LSV mentioned on stream, Theros seems to be a high synergy set, which I'm finding refreshing after a year of Thragtusk goodstuff decks. Maybe it loses that feel as the season develops and I'll lose interest, but so far I'm having fun with it.
I've been toying with the UW version, the white being a splash for Daxos (more Nightveil Specters) and Rootborn Defenses. With 4 Hallowed Fountains and 4 Godless Shrines you can run that splash without having to use CIPT lands, of course you are paying an average of 4 life per game for it which really weakens the red matchup. On the other hand it opens up Azorius Charm for lifelink out of the board to solve that problem.

Does not kill specter. This was one of the reason the deck was hard to fight there was not much removal that kills it and master. Dimir charm is looking pretty good now as it can hit all the cards in mono U. Then u have stupid Thasa... Lol did any one catch the RnD vid where the guy goes " I realy hope indestructible enchantments won't be problematic". Well congrats the thre mana one with great abilities is!

It could be a thing. GW uses roobtborn defenses and it is by far one of the most annoying things to play against as control.

I'm glad we have Illness in the Ranks. It's easy to splash and even adds to your devotion count early on.
