Doesn't seem that bad. especially since we're not counting cards that very well could go up such as reverent hunger, prognostic sphinx, gift of immortality, and all of your uncommons/commons
So basically 50 bucks of actual value. or maybe less. prices stores are asking on opening day hardly reflect actual value.
My LGS does actually have a 100% trade in policy and the store owner is a all around cool guy. Keep in mind that I litterally just wanted 4 UB duals and 4 Steam Augyry's and traded in just about everything else. Granted I was lucky but when you're trading in just about everything you pull its not that hard snagging an extra box or two.
Don't know about your LGS but we're pretty laid back. The shop doesn't really mind losing some value on boxes as our singles sales are generally huge.

Don't know about your LGS but we're pretty laid back. The shop doesn't really mind losing some value on boxes as our singles sales are generally huge.
Then the next question is... where is this incredible store that gives 100% value?!?!?
Most stores have to turn a profit, so offering them at the same value you sell them at equals no profit. Our store offers 50% on cards under $10, and 70% on cards over $10.
This is why i stress to everyone not to buy pack/boosters. You hardly ever get anything you want and you are left with a pile of junk and you are sitting there wishing you spent your hundred dollars on playable cards.
I dont understand buying boxes... Even if you open like 1 of all the good cards... You still likely need 3 more for a playset so ..
It's a psychological and social thing. At least for me. It's the same reason people play the lottery. You dream of getting that crazy box where you pull a foil *insert most expensive mythic* along with all kinds of other crazy good stuff. It's also just exciting and fun to open packs. Especially when everyone else in the shop with you is also busting open a box. It's a fun, shared experience, and afterwards everyone wants to swap what they pulled with each other, so you get some nice trade opportunities.
On top of that, you have people like me who have trouble letting themselves pay $100 for a playset of a card, but have no problem paying $100 to crack packs hoping to pull one plus other cool stuff. I know it's flawed logic, but yeah. The allure and mystery of a box, or getting a whole box full of cards instead of just a few, is hard to resist!
I don't get why you would crack packs for value. Since you're into making money off of those packs, think of it this way: a booster box is like choosing a stock that has lower expected value AND higher risk than the other option (singles). Put another way...

Sorry, but that makes no sense. How can singles sales be huge (if by huge you mean profitable) if he makes no profit off of cards that are traded in?
How would one go about trying to make this list at least profitable or at the very least get at least 60% of my the $100 I spent on it back?
Of those I think that Fleecemane Lion, Swan Song, and Hero's Downfall all have a very good chance of rising in value in the coming months as archetypes start to develop.
I have not fully searched through mine yet, but I know I got 3/5 of the G-ds and no PW. I only got one of the dual lands (foil Temple of Mystery which I will have to unload somewhere), which makes me quite happy as I doubt I will use them for anything other than EDH. That said I am not really unhappy with my purchase, as I got about what I expected out of it and now I have some fun cards to browse and search for synergies.

Im not going to total it up, but I'd say this is pretty rare to make back that much if not make more than what the box was bought for (110) but I guess if someone is bored have at it.
Ok, this is a dumb question but... what exactly is a "box of Theros"?
You listed 36 cards, so clearly it was not a booster (which has 15 cards). Neither can it be a box of boosters (because there are dozens or so boosters in one.) So what exactly is a "box of Theros" that has 36 cards in it?
(No, I haven't been in a game shop recently so I really don't know what kind of "boxes" do these Theros cards come in. It's just that I have never seen any box that comes with 36 cards in it.)
They are only listing the rares and mythics from a booster box opened. 36 packs = at least 36 rare/mythic.
Theros boxes seem to be a bit more random than usual, I saw 13 boxes opened today (8 drafts + some guys who were opening their boxes at the store) five boxes had 2 or less mythics, 7 boxes had 5+ not counting foils, the one I drafted had 2 Hythonias, Phurphoros, Heliod, Master of Waves, Thassa, Polukranos and 3 Thoughtseize. Not only are 7 mythics an anomaly, but 3 of the same rare and a repeated mythic is extra rare.

Yes sir, I take fantasy art and character design commissions, PM me for rates.
(Which brings up the question: Why do people expect rares to be good, when WotC/Maro have repeatedly stated that's not the main purpose of rares?)
Well the OP seems to view the box from a monetary point of view and if you look in the case of singles at your shop almost all of the higer priced cards are rare/mythic. That is what is generally used to evaluate the quality of pulls, though I myself am not quite so focused on the $$ value of my pulls.
So I went out and purchased what is perhaps the most useless box of Theros that could possibly be gotten. Now I'm sitting here with barely anything playable or anything trade worthy and wondering what to do with these terrible cards. Here's a list of the cards:
I dont understand buying boxes... Even if you open like 1 of all the good cards... You still likely need 3 more for a playset so ..
Exactly how I feel. Maybe some people think they're going to be that 1 in a million who pull a play set of exactly what they're looking for. Then they'll have the laugh on us...until we tell them there's a better chance of winning a few hundred thousand in the lottery or at Bingo.
Someone correct me if a playset of a rare or Mythic is impossible. I don't open boxes, so I don't know.

You'd be surprised what you can trade to EDH players as well. We aren't always looking for Xenagos or Thoughtseize. Heck, I'd like to get my hands on Bident of Thassa, Gift of Immortality, Reaper of the Wilds, Nighthowler, Anax and Cymede, Medomai the Ageless, and the Temples. Although, I admit, there is no way that I'm trading/buying the temples until they rotate out of Standard. Those cards will be $1-2 in a few years.
Then the next question is... where is this incredible store that gives 100% value?!?!?

My store doesn't pay cash for anything Magic related. Store credit only, so no one ever actually makes a profit on packs they open unless it's with other players.

It is impossible to have more than 3 of the same rare/mythic in a box, and even then, one must be foil. This is due to the way that print runs work.

Thats what Ebay is for my friend.
On another note, the box I opened had SIX gods. Two foil. No lie, one pack had the white god, and the foil red one. This is in addition to two thoughtsiezes in the box.
In the end, opening a box is for fun and its basically gambling. If you don't "win" and get crap pulls... it happens, you just have to roll with the punches. I got a ****ty box last time I bought one at the scars prerelease.

That's very odd, my box had just one, Heliod. My friends didn't pull any gods in their boxes which was even stranger. My box was decent but not as good as yours. I pulled Elspeth, Cashseize, Ashiok, 2 Underworld Cerberus (one foil), all the weapons and all the temples.

You can't make lemonade out of a hunk of crap. You're not going to get $60 back out of that stuff, let alone making it profitable. If you don't want to write it off as a loss, then you'll have to tighten your budget somewhere else or work overtime to make up for the money you blew.

Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.
My store doesn't pay cash for anything Magic related. Store credit only, so no one ever actually makes a profit on packs they open unless it's with other players.
When stores do around here it is a chump game for the desperate to take cash, anyway. I only did it twice- once was about four and a half years ago when I was drinking and abusing pills, and did not have enough money in the bank to fill my needs that night (night before we got paid). I took a huge hit in my collection that night. The other time was after I was sober and we needed to pay a bill. Sucked both times. Later I was talking to one of the shop owners and he was saying that they really don't like paying out cash for product and he keeps the % he pays low in part to dissuade people from doing it.
It is impossible to have more than 3 of the same rare/mythic in a box, and even then, one must be foil. This is due to the way that print runs work.
I thought they had instituted a randomization measure before boxing to dissuade box mappers. If that's the case then it seems like it could be possible, though WILDLY improbable.

boon satyr and the temples will see some play; even the black god and some of those other cards are at least interesting
but really if you were only looking for specific cards you should be buying singles. overall you did ok, ive seen far worse boxes.
