...Night's Reach could travese the planes because of the rift at the Talon Gates, formed when Bolas engaged in the first planeswalker battle eons before Time Spiral. The events of Time Spiral sealed the rift, but not before Bolas was able to escape his Meditation Realm and hunt down Night's Reach. Night's Reach planeshifting was independent of Time Sprial's events.
"We know Ashiok is associated with shadowy nightmare stuff. So it is reasonable to speculate that Ashiok is the last in the Umezawa line."
If you're going to extrapolate that far, we could also say Ashiok is the offspring of Skellum and Braids, because they were both master dementia summoners who were associated with "shadowy nightmare stuff".
We have no evidence of them having sex. That's baseless spec on your part.
Folks, have fun with this, but there is clearly nothing of benefit to be gleaned from this line of, ahem, "conversation" beyond your personal entertainment.
But it's exactly the sort of baseless leaps you're making. You see the exact fallacy I'm illustrating.
I'm done with this discussion.
No fallacies. You see, my theory is based on the fact that Night's Reach could traverse the planes, Toshi and Kiku's night together, and the jushi curse's effect on Kiku (Gave her a shadowy appearance).
So. Um.. How about that Ashiok? Pretty creepy, huh.

Oh yeah, totes.
I've been thinking about it for a day and a half, and it still makes me uncomfortable to look at the art.
Like. I gain no enjoyment out of looking at it. The headlessness just creeps me right the flip out, and they did a good job of surely do that on purpose, but jegus.
I also like that, how I've always wanted to see a full on mill planeswalker, but design really wants that to go :um::bm: because it allows access to the full effect of millingness, but creative doesn't want to (yet) commit Jace to white or black.

Now we get our cake and can eat it too!
I, too, am concerned that Ashiok has too much flavor overlap with Jace. They both use mental magic, they conjure creatures born of thoughts (illusions/nightmares), and mechanically they both attack the library and can steal other players' cards. Not that you'd ever confuse the two, but these characters are going to be fighting over the same pieces of "flavor pie" if you will.

Very creepy if you consider the fact that it could use Bolas' mind-ripping magic against him. Having an elder dragon planeswalker as your slave? Brutal. It is especially dark when you consider the fact that said planeswalker wiped out the whole of your lineage.

I'm not.
Jace specializes in telepathy and mindreading, Ashiok is highly focused on mind****ery. Breaking in and finding horrible things and making you experience those horrible things. Plus if they keep up with the dementia angel, there's lots of neat crap we could see from Otaria's school of dementia.
I'm more worried about Garruk and Domri.
I figure they're just going to push Garruk in the cursed direction in the future, but then we keep seeing these core set walkers and I'm like "That could be Domri in 10 years after his balls finish dropping."

If Ashiok could get close enough to Bolas, that is. Bolas is old, and experienced. He's effectively been the emperor and mob boss quite a few times over. He knows how to plan. I don't think he'd let a threat like that go unchecked.

This is now my headcanon of what our new walker friend is.

This is because Jace is a U/B walker and they refuse to make him one because only evil mindrapists can be u/b.

What I like, though, is how they show the duality of mental magic. One the one side of the coin, you've got Jace, who creates illusions and skims thoughts and just generally mind reads, and you've got Ashiok, who pulls nightmares from your deepest darkest corners and rips the very thoughts from your head.
Their use of mind magic is what will distinguish them. I expect Jace will be more hesitant to do any mindsculpting, whereas Ashiok would happily pick your brain, then turn whatever it finds against you.

The interesting thing from Jace's magic is that to do those sorts of things, he has to be in your head, and with his talents, it means that he experiences everything he does to people.
It was part of the really interesting moral quandary in Agents of Artifice.

Right, it forces him to be more empathic, which is one thing that consistently pushes him away from :symb:. Clearly this isn't the case for Ashiok, or if it is, they're far beyond the point of caring.

I had hoped we'd see Domri move more into the mana acceleration side of RG, being an impetuous youth and all, leaving Garruk as the GIANT BEASTS SMASH walker, but Xenagos basically has the abilities I would have given Domri.
Xenagos is exactly the RG walker I've been waiting for my whole life.

I'm extremely tempted to make a Dark Knight joke.
But I shall refrain. It's not the joke we need right now.
*flourishes cape*
The only thing I can see the difference between Garruk and Domri, besides size is that Domri is more concerned with his connection to beasts, where as Garruk is about being alpha as hell. One has a more empathetic connection than the other.

As a person of dual citizenship, I can safely say we don't want this over there either.

I need your reasoning. As I said, mine is based on Saviors of Kamigawa's novel and the Time Spiral novels.

(Clearly, Ashiok is not heads on that coin.)

Domri inherets the beastmaster shtick, and with the addition of red, can access things the previously monoG Garruk couldn't.
Where Domri goes tall, Xenagos goes wide. Lots of "play me with LOTS of dudes" because a party is more fun with company. ;D
