I'm just wondering how judging at premier level events work. If you are a judge and you would like to judge at these large events can you apply? Do they give preference to local judges? Do you need to be LV 2 or higher/ How does it exactly work?
GPs tend to only accept L1s that are ready to test for L2, in accordance with the relatively new policy that only L2+ are permitted on GP main event staff; space for L1 judges dedicated to side events is very limited.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
You also can apply as an L0-LE, through judge apps, but like Annorax stated, you're not likely to be accepted unless you're on track for L2, and there's space for you. typically you see 0-2 L1's on staff for those events these days. I also believe there is a bit of preference to local judges, but more so because they typically don't need room sponsorship, meaning they end up costing the event less.
Pretty much what Annorax said. Though if they are expecting an absolutely huge turn out (like GP Vegas) they'll pretty much take anyone with a pulse that is certified. Though I didn't find out about that until afterwards.
Also make sure you have a good relationship with your RC. The TO will contact your RC and ask for an opinion, and even if you're an amazing judge if they do not know that or don't like you, there is no way you'll get staffed. I'm getting that right now so I am speaking from experience.
GPs will accept some L1s, though L1s generally cannot work the main event, only the side events. The main event is geared L2+, and on Sunday it is strictly L2+.
PTs are L3+.
Staffing for all professional-level events, and many other events, is handled through JudgeApps, which anyone who is or wants to be a judge can sign up for (it also hosts forums, community projects, etc. in addition to staffing).
To the OP, I would suggest talking to your RC or local L3+s about your interest in judging premier events, they would be able to give you better feedback, and possibly include you in a premier event based on your interest

RCs tend to be pretty on the ball in my experience, if yours has a low opinion of you, I would talk to him, find out what his concerns are, and focus on improving those areas, rather than making passive-aggressive anonymous posts on Salvation.

That wasn't a passive-agrressive post. It was making a statement of fact. Paraphrasing from my RC from the judge conference a few weeks ago in Michigan, "We're instituting a Regional Captain program to better serve all of the judges of the region. There are so many of you and it is easy to be lost in the shuffle since I am only 1 person."
If I wanted to be passive-aggressive I could do a far better job.
Back on topic now:
Everything said so far in this thread about working GPs is completely accurate. L2+ only for Sunday, and L1s are stuck on side event duty if they are selected at all. And do not hold your breath.
I wouldn't say L1s are "stuck" on side events. I would really push back against the idea that side events are less prestigious than the main event. L1s working GPs work just as hard as anyone else, have just as much fun, and are appreciated just as much as anyone else. And honestly, side events are more fun than the main event.
The question of preference to local judges is a complicated one; it depends on where you are, where the GP is, and what the regions are like. We try to serve the local regions with a GP (making sure the needs of the event are served), but for more specifics, contact your RC.
And if you're interested in working Professional events and advancing, I suggest you contact your RC or another L3 in your region (preferably both).
