Cripes. Stoneforge Mystic is at $25+ now? It was around four bucks just a few months ago? Is that all TNN doing that?
It hasn't been 'four bucks' at least for the last few years. Card was $7 each 2 years ago and was $9-10 each over the summer (all eBay pricing). It jumped, but there's no reason to exaggerate to throw fuel on the fire.
Stoneforge, a tutor and Mana acceleration tool all in one. The fact that it's price surprises people is more surprising to me than said price. The writing was on the wall from the start.
To be honest, I was surprised that Stoneforge Mystic was as low in price as she was for so long. Of course she'd be worth waaay more if she wasn't banned in Modern, but I figured it was only a matter of time until she caught up with Snapcaster Mage. Lets just hope she never reaches Tarmogoyf or Dark Confidant.

I was looking today and from the prices I was looking at a few months ago (when I was buying them) it looks like Wasteland has jumped between $10-20 more; which surprises me (as I don't imagine demand could really jump that much from before?)
Were there that many non-tempo decks switching to a TNN style?
Like come on, Legacy is becoming to hard to reach. They should at least print like a Legacy Masters set. I know that would break the Reserved List rules, but honestly the Reserved List should have never been invented. Seriously Wizards. Get your act together.

As it tends to be brought up a lot, duals are for the most part the only cards affected by the reserve list. Most other cards could be printed in standard, like force of will, if they wanted.

Other than the fact that they aren't reprinting many of those cards in Standard not just for Standard power-level reasons, but for Modern power-level reasons as well. Cards like Wasteland and Jace, the Mind Sculptor are never getting reprinted in Standard.

I imagine it was the holiday season that brought prices up again. Some people buy Magic cards as gifts. When the holiday is over, some people have received money as gifts and turn them into Magic cards.

Decks:
Legacy: RWBG Goblins RRR Burn WBU Affinity UBR Sac-Land Tendrils! BBBPox
Next possible deck: D&T, but that just wouldn't be right.
Modern: R Goblins (work in progress)
Standard: I only care about standard when Goblins is a deck.
Limited: I only care about limited when Goblins are in the set.
Stoneforge Mystic was always fated for a high price. She's played in so many decks, responsible for the very existence of archetypes, a format-defining card (for fair decks, at least). I think it's weird that she took so long to climb (which she isn't finished doing, IMHO). Some Legacy price increases occur very suddenly. It's a bizarre market.
I'm sure we all remember the Rishadan Port fiasco last summer. I was chilling at home, checking some card prices for an unfathomable reason (as I'd owned my Ports for a long time already), and found that Rishadan Port was listing a $160 mid price tag on magiccards.info. About an hour later, I was heading into a movie with my wife. Checked the price of Port while waiting in line. $250 in the center column. "Well, that's insane." Watched the movie, checked the price on the way home, 'down' to $60.
I have been telling people since day 1 that she will reach confidant prices. She is more played and printed less.
She was in the new phyrexia event deck, which had an impact on keeping the card lower in price for a while. Now the card will continue to skyrocket. I don't know how many event decks were made, but SFM is more than the initial print run since it "came out" again as a 2x in that deck. It's going up due to hype and speculation.

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
I'm kind of annoyed that Candelabra of Tawnos is 250 because I just need it for a lands deck. And because the list runs tabernacle , magus of the candelabra isn't a very good option
It's used in Elves as a sideboard card. After the BoM lots of Elves cards have jumped.
I'd get that, but the card has gone from 5-7 range to 25-30 on the sites I buy from since I priced it for my 4th for explorer pod, I don't think that was even 3 weeks ago and BoM was back in November. I'd understand if it was a slow creep since november, or a spike right after the event. I just don't get what changed that made demand increase 400%-500% in the past few weeks.
Anyone know why cabal therapy's price is going through the roof? I remember seeing them around 6 not that long ago.
I was wondering that too. I can understand why cards like Chord of Calling and Karn Liberated are so expensive. I figure modern season is coming up and that is why their prices have gone up so much. You see cards like Cabal Therapy or Stoneforge Mystic and you wonder why they just jumped up in price so much. I understand why they are good cards but the prices jump doesn't make me feel like I would go out and spend $20 or $25 on Cabal Therapy or Stoneforge Mystic. I was lucky enough to get 3 Cabal Therapy at $10 each because one of our local stores hadn't updated their prices yet. That was on Monday. I checked online Tuesday and they finally changed the price to $20.
Stoneforge has always been underpriced. It's the backbone of a bunch of T1 decks. I think right now the price is accurately reflecting the amount of play it gets.

I agree with you wholeheartedly and am so happy I got mine when they were $6 a pop. I'd be so boned without them.

SCG has said that from time to time they see a card as undervalued, because of things like play frequency and their stocks getting low, and they raise their buy list price, purchase from other vendors to get more stock, and raise their own selling price. Because of their influence, most vendors migrate towards SCG's price eventually. Wasteland can still be gotten for $80 from other stores though.
SCG's idea of a card's evaluation doesn't always stick though, so don't discount Wasteland going back down in price. Highly collectible cards have very good price memory, but cards that get most of their value from the amount of people wanting to play in tournaments with them are pretty good about going back down if they're overvalued.
In April of last year, SCG considered Force of Will to be undervalued and it shot from $67 to $83 in 2 1/2 weeks. By November, it was back to $68.
On the flip side, in another price surge that jolted people, Misty Rainforest went from $18 to $33 in a week in October '12. Just kept rising, with no rebound though; 55 bucks now.

So the last few years have seen a major increase in price for lots of legacy staples (and some not so staply but yet, increased anyways).
Barely three years ago a City of Traitors was 20$. It is now at 70$ (don't even know why).
Wasteland, a basic land card for the entry into competitive Legacy, is averaging 75$.
What exactly has caused the format's staples to jump up in prices to such heights (fetch lands are another)?
A friend of mine, who has worked for a card store for many years stated that Legacy is on the verge of collapsing on itself (no major tournament support, no GPs, or at least almost none) due to it's bloated price structure (think the housing bubble here).
How long does it have? What can be done to save it? Does major players like Star City and Hasbro care if Legacy were to go the way of Vintage (maybe one or two major Legacy events for a giant picture of some card - ha, who cares?)?
In your opinion, where do you see Legacy in the next 5 years? Why do you see it where you think it will be? In addition, how do you feel about SCG meddling with cards values? Do you think that their market manipulations is affecting the game negatively or positively in the long run?
