It's further proof that they don't really understand their own format. They have their ideas for what they want the format to be, but their ban lists don't really show much forethought in what it takes to get there. I have to wonder if Thoughtseize is next or something, on the grounds that it's "too powerful" because it can take any nonland card.
DRS being banned officially kills whatever interest I may have had in the format, at any rate.
Thoughtseize and DRS are a far cry away in power level.
Thoughtseize is the best version of discard in modern. But it is quite conditional (on having a hand), it has significant costs (heavy black commitment, 2 life), and it isn't always a four of in every deck that runs black.
If you can think of any other one mana hybrid cards that kill your opp., gain you life, act as graveyard removal, and accelerate your drops, please inform us all. Because DRS is better than almost every card within 2 casting cost of itself- which is amazing.
I personally feel as though the banning of DRS is also a good indication that the allied colored fetches will be printed, making them legal for the Modern format. The reprint has been in demand for a very long time, and people have speculated for awhile.
Ugh... the convoluted reasoning that people come up with to speculate on allied fetchland reprints never ceases to abound.
I am just too excited with DRS getting banned and the other two unbannings. I think the floodgate has opened for at least a dozen other decks. Going to go make a reanimator deck now.
He's the Head Designer. This is a Development call. Sure if he says something they're probably going to respect his opinion more than a random person on the internet, but he also knows that Development has more expertise than him on this matters.
He's also personally responsible for the creation of more banned and restricted cards than anyone else. He's certainly not the expert on creating balanced environments.
Jund will take a hit that's for sure, but Waste Not is right around the corner. I truly fear what will happen when my thoughseizes draw me cards and make creatures...

Once again, power level is development's job. MaRo even states that he himself is not good at determining overall power level. He may have designed a card, but he didn't cost it or tweak its stats to make it broken (like skullclamp's change to +1/-1)
EDH is like French fries: some people like waffle cut, crinkle cut, or plain old straight cut, and while there's slight flavor difference and personal preference, at the end of the day they're still fries.

You won't have to worry about it because Jund won't play that card.
Good thing I never purchased a DRS that wasn't in a pack. When standard BUG mill or UB mill becomes viable the life gain will come from it to stabilize life loss from thoughtseize and underworld connections. It'll leave standard with his skull held high.
Thoughtseize and DRS are a far cry away in power level.
In a way, that was my point. They don't know what's right for their format, so they'll take any specious reasoning to ban something that's highly prevalent if they don't like it for whatever reason.

Uh..... You're partially right. But MaRo was once a designer-***-developer for sets that brought the most bannings to date.
Developers do stupid things as well. It's just not reported. In fact, Design gets more unwarranted brickbats from the public.

Yea, any card that appears in 4s and top8 multiple high level tourneys are giving red alert now. Wizards are terrible at this. Who says they don't set prices???

I find it funny that DRS was banned "because the BG/x deck was "able to trade 1-for-1 better than any other deck"
Welcome to Modern, where Wizards acknowledges that they're weakening something that can really only be called a fair strategy.
That's not to say I don't understand it. Deathrite fueled "BUG Faeries" is probably not a deck they want to make players have to deal with right off the "unban Bitterblossom" bat. They probably want to allow the meta to adjust to Bitterblossom, and then re-introduce DRS, because DRS was a big part of why Snapcaster wasn't too insane.
I feel like they just want to let the format learn how to fight Bitterblossom, because while DRS was good, it was still fair.
Good unbans. Wild nacatl and friends have always been insanely good against bitter blossom, so thats a great tandem unban. Death rite shaman is a fine ban. Like man other cards in magics history, is way too good with fetch lands (anyone else noticing the problem card here?)
Don't worry, it's a legacy staple. It'll eventually hit the same price mark as Stoneforge.
I'd say once supply really dries up DRS is set to make Stoneforge look cheap in comparison with or without this banning. The card is far more of a format staple than Stoneforge.
I hope this banning causes people to start giving up their foil Deathrites in trades.
A deck with thoughtseize, inquisition, and liliana wont run waste not?
Not the good ones. Waste Not does nothing on its own, and the discard spells aren't always the best either in some match ups. In the matchups where you want all of those discard spells, you don't have room for Waste Not. In the match ups where you side out discard, obviously Waste Not is bad. You can't afford to have cards that do nothing on their own in Modern unless the immediately win you the game. Waste Not only provides incremental advantage over time, and only if you have other cards to activate it.

I have a feeling your right on this. Banning DRS lowers the power or absolute necessity of fetch lands in decks that ran it. While they are still extremely good, budget players are no where near as crippled using other "dual" lands in their place. Now lets all go and buy up the Scars of Mirrodin lands so they sky rocket!
There is currently no website, bar ebay with 1 left at 72$ ish with the buy me now option, with any bitterblossom at under 80$. This is insane. TCGPLAYER is sold out period!
A deck with thoughtseize, inquisition, and liliana wont run waste not?
in short no because it adds to bad top decks late game and doesn't do anything the turn you play it assuming its turn 2. forces you to play poorly ie hold the discard spell for waste not to get that magical extra value haha

Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
